Hi everyone! *Waves*
You know Knerd, I have had several really expensive sewing machines over the years and I keep going back to those 99.00 Brother's. They work really well, and since I work with so much mohair when they get clogged up beyond repair I just scrap them and get a new one. But I have had both a Singer and Pfaff, and neither of them worked as well as the inexpensive Brother. |
Really? I've always heard people complaining about problems with their Brothers. Whenever I ask for recommendations, people just tell me "If you pay for a cheap machine, you'll get a cheap machine."
Ah well, I've got plenty of time to shop around. |
I think a lot of it depends on what you're going to do with it.

I would knit a Doctor Who scarf. x3
A reeaally long one. xDD Edit: I must also make it my aim, once I have broken up from school for the Summer/am on my Gap Year, to make a set of pyjamas for my favourite toy. Or a coat. Because her own stitching is coming apart through wear and love. She's as old as I am, and I would be heartbroken if she fell apart. >3< |
^ Doctor Who scarf? I've never seen the show, so I don't really know what that's supposed to look like. All I know about him is that he travels around in a blue telephone box.
@Blondheart: Right now, I mostly just reconstruct t-shirts. I buy the big huge boxy ones that never fit anyone, then I slim them down and customize the neckline and sleeves. It's a fun little hobby, but it can get frustrating sewing it all by hand. @fiarra: That's one of the reasons I've never knitted the scarves. I want it to be high quality, but I just don't have time for those patterns. |

A Doctor Who scarf is then just loo~~~oo~~~oong, and as many colours as you want to make it. xD I think the idea is you try not to trip up on the ends. I haven't actually seen any of his episodes, but the scarf's sort of become emblematic of the entire series. I'll curb my enthusiasm about the new series they've just started showing adverts for. xD;; |
I've promised myself that the next scarf I knit is going to be argyle:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...YL._AA280_.jpg There's a great pattern for one in the book "Son of Stitch n Bitch," so I plan on experimenting with either that or something similar. |
I wish I knew how to knit. I bought a book on how to crochet. I hope I can figure it out.
|
I can't imagine trying to knit anything argyle. Switching colors and the like.
I had a roommate who knit a lot more than me. She made a tube-tope with a picture of some Naruto character on the front. All I remember is that it involved a lot of balls of yarn. |
I don't suppose we're allowed to talk about painting in here as well? >__>;;
|
^ Go right ahead, I see no reason why not.
Intarsia knitting really isn't the difficult. It takes some getting used to, especially if you haven't worked with multiple colors before. The interesting thing about making a scarf would be that it would have to be reversible. |
Wow. I saw the title of this thread, ran to my parent's bedroom, and grabbed a copy of the book. xD
I'm a pseudo spinner/knitter/crocheter who really needs to get back into practice. fiarra: Switching the colors actually isn't too hard. Every so often, it gets a bit tedious, but I find it to be worth it for the end result usually looks quite a bit nicer because of it. I should go find some of my metal-work/jewlery i've created and post it here... |

The Tenth Doctor's brown coat is starting to get the same way as the scarf; emblematic. I'm seeing more and more people at conventions wearing brown coats and carrying the sonic screwdriver toy. Oh, sorry. My rabid Whovianism is showing again... I'm mainly a sewer, but I do some jewelery making as well (I'd really like to learn how to wire-wrap stones) and some embroidery. If anyone wants to know where to look for period costume references, I'm yer gal! Is anyone else in here an anime cosplayer? Are we allowed to talk about that here? ^_^; |
Hey all! I haven't been on Mene awhile and it's nice to see and SnB thread! I'm mostly knit and crochet but I love to make jewelry and really want to learn to sew and spin. I'm currently planning my wedding and I'm hand making just about everything except the clothing and the wedding cake so I've been busy in the planning stages for the invitations right now.

I'm not a cosplayer, but it's always interested me. I've done some minor costuming for local theatre productions, but that's it. If you'd like to talk about cosplay, limit it to costumes that you yourself have made. This place is partly about sewing, so of course costuming can be included in that. |
@Knerd: No problem. I'm mostly into designing my own stuff, lately, anyway. So I suppose with me it isn't cosplay in the strictest sense.
Hey, are there any good websites out there from which to learn how to knit? |
knittinghelp.com I believe it is, is wonderful and have free video tutorials that's how I learned
|
Sweet! Thanks bunches!

@Berzerker - I have a LASER screwdriver.
My sister and I exchanged them at Christmas. xD; >3< I have a brown coat, but it's not really long enough. When my friend and I went to Cardiff, we went to several exhibitions, and saw that it looked like they'd sewn 6 inches onto his coat in the display cabinet (my Dad said David Tennant's a bit short, I don't know for sure xD). < <;; My glasses are also modelled on Doctor Who. *sigh* Such a geek. x3 If I ever go to an anime convention (and I have a friend whose dying to drag me along to one)... I'd dress as Miyzaki's Nausicaa. xD Pretty easy, really. I already have white tights. ;3 Painting, painting, painting... my arms are covered in green acrylic. I'll take a photo when it's done properly and post it here, along with my old textiles project, if I can dig up the photos. |

What area do you live in? I'm only intimately familier with the yarn shops in the bay area around SF/Silicon Valley, but I could help you find at least try to find where the closest convention to you is.
