LBJ was a pretty interesting guy. He did underestimate the growth of the new left, and that contributed to his declining popularity - along with Vietnam and domestic tensions.

Then again, he managed to be the first... Catholic I think, elected. And he has had affairs, yet was not thought to be dirty, compared to LBJ.

Interestingly, LBJ was the one who really pushed for the Civil Rights Act - he chaired a commission for it right before JFK was assassinated. True that LBJ had affairs - he wasn't really thought of as being dirty. He was considered to be much less refined and extremely pushy. He would stare people down in what was called "the treatment" and often used his height to his advantage. He'd served in Congress for such a long time that he knew how to play the game well. Unfortunately, a lot of the reforms he pushed for and was able to pass seemed like too much too soon for some and too little too late for others. I could go on about this, but then it would turn into something similar to the 20 page paper I wrote about him in grad school :)

Do you know if it is true that he skinny-dipped during board meetings and ... had the writer of his biography 'in his bed' in the non dirty way? Just to throw them off guard?

He liked to show off his physique, that's for sure! He was also much like other men of his era as far as being a womanizer goes. Most politicians of that time likely couldn't swear that they weren't cheats. Kind of made Hoover seem a bit comical, in my opinion, because he was so into taping and photographing people in the act in order to blackmail them later. If you ever see the show "Mad Men", they make the characters seem a bit over the top with the stereotypes, but when you look at the historic record, they really aren't that far off the mark.

Seems a bit like a mild social gilded age rerun. This behavior is disgusting. At least he had the Warren Commission to investigate the whole conspiracy theory behind JFK's death. I think that was a smart move.

@ Hatake - he was in charge of the FBI for a long time, and kept records on nearly everyone - political, entertainment industry - animal, vegetable or mineral - if he thought there was a point to keeping an eye on them. Funny thing is, he was - allegedly - a homosexual and cross-dresser, but would hold onto that kind of info about someone else. Anything that society could deem as being deviant behavior was fair game to him. Every politician was at least slightly scared of him.
