The Elder Scrolls

Yes, this includes all Elder Scrolls games. Arena, Daggerfall, Legends: Battlespire, Adventures: Redguard, Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon, Oblivion, Shivering Isles, and Knights of the Nine discussion are all welcome here.

As for me, I completely restarted Oblivion. I joined the Mages' guild, and got about four recommendations, and now I'm going through Shivering Isles under Mania alignment, as opposed to Dementia from last time. I have gotten to the head of every faction on various older files and beaten the main quest twice. :3

Keska 04-28-2008 03:40 PM

I'm currently playing Oblivion. Like you I had to completely restart it. It had been so long since I last played it that I really didn't remember anything. So instead of getting frustrated by it I just restarted the whole thing. I'm having lots of fun with it. I love it because it's so free roaming.

I currently finished becoming the arch mage and became grand champion of the arena. Now I'm working on the main story a bit while doing some of the side quests. I get so distracted by side quests.

Pkero 04-30-2008 06:25 AM

Yeah. I never did the side quests in Shivering Isles, actually. They seemed boring. o_O

As for the Arena, they made it too easy, imo. It's just an easy money-maker.

Keska 04-30-2008 04:09 PM

Yeah, the arena was easy for me to do. Especially since my magic is so strong. I just did it to get it out of the way. Plus the money did help.

I haven't even started on Shivering Isles yet. But I did see one of my friends playing it and it looks like it will be fun. I'm still just doing the main story and all of the side quests that pop up because I tend to talk to people a lot. I want to finish the main story before I even attempt to play Shivering Isles.

For some reason though I had the Assassin's guild contact me. I had been trying to be careful and not kill people that I wasn't supposed to kill. But I guess I wasn't as careful as I thought becasue they approached me. I'm thinking of starting that some time soon.

I love that there is so much to do in this game. I also like how I can choose to do stuff right away or wait on it.

Furious 05-01-2008 03:47 AM

Keska- Did you by any chance complete the Quest for the Arena Grand Champion to find out he was half Vampire? Because if you do that, when you get to the end and fight him, he won't want to fight you and will just let you kill him, which will count as a killing to get into the Dark Brotherhood (Assassins guild).

And I adore oblivion, but it's been a while since I've played it. I have little urges every now and then to play it, and I start over every time. I almost always join the Dark Brotherhood. It's such an awesome quest line, and I love the robes and armour you get. It's also very easy, if you use the duplication glitch to dupe hundreds of invisibility potions and use them during every mission. I'm a cheater like that XD

I find the mages guild to be fairly annoying, mostly the recommendation quests. I have made it to arch mage once or twice, but that's it. The main quest is also pretty fun, but if you do it too many times, it gets annoying/boring. I would love to be able to download shivering isles off the Xbox live market, but I don't have a membership to the market. It stinks ):

But I still love the game. It's great to be able to go anywhere, any time at all. To do whatever you want. The only thing I don't like is the level scaling and loot scaling. I want to be able to break into a rich persons house at the start of the game using pure skill and get a ton of valuables. Instead, there's just ordinary crap. Same for caves >_>

Suddenly I want to replay the game, though. Thanks to this thread XD I never really got into Morrowind, though. My mom did. I was young when it came out, and it was really complicated to me. I kind of want to retry it, too. But I'm scared that I would find it boring, and ugly compared to oblivion. And it just seems so...Hard, compared to oblivion :/

Keska 05-01-2008 03:44 PM

JamesB14: Yes, I did complete the quest for the Grand Champion. Wow, thanks. I was trying to figure out why the Dark Brotherhood ( I keep calling it the assassins guild for some reason) had approached me. Now, it all makes sense. I still feel bad about killing him though.

I love Oblivion. I know that there were games prior to it but I don't know if I could play them. Like you I have concerns that I might not like them as much or find the graphics not to my taste. So I don't know if I'll ever play the prior games in the series. I did hear that in one of them (can't remember which one) you could become a werewolf and that kind of intrigues me.

I agree with you on the Mage's Guild quests. Some of them were rather annoying. I hated having to get all the recommendations. But I went to all the trouble to start it so I was determined to finish it. I wasn't going to let those recommendations go to waste. XD

I never finished the main quest the first time around. So I'm looking forward to trying to finish it this time. I think the first time I played I ignored the main quest completely for all the side quests. But I love that about this game. I can choose to do that. XD

Pkero 05-06-2008 08:49 AM

James, as long as you have an internet connection to Xbox Live, you can download stuff. You need Xbox Live Silver membership, and that comes with all Xboxes. Gold is to play online. But you can go buy points cards, enter the voucher into Live, and then use those points to buy stuff online.

I'm wondering if you can close all the Oblivion gates.

I'm at the point in the game when Oblivion gates are randomly popping up all over the place. I'm not talking about the ones in front of all the cities. These gates are in the middle of no where and I find them when I'm traveling around. I went into one and couldn't figure out how to close it. So can we not close these ones? I may have just missed how to close it. Some of the gates are a bit tricky.

geishaberry 05-22-2008 12:35 AM

I am absolutely in love with TES: Oblivion. I've had it for a couple of months now - I really put off buying it  - but I don't regret getting it. In fact, I got it for the XBox for my birthday, found out about the massive modding community and not long after got it and all the expansions for the PC. Is anyone into modding or the mod community? I absolutely adore the Unique Landscapes series. I don't think I could ever play the game without them. They make everything so pretty. ;3; I also love all the different mods that add new hairstyles. XD

Currently I have four main characters:
Lysan is a male bosmer working his way up through the Dark Brotherhood ranks. He is very evil. :| I'm also going to go through the Vile Lair DLC with Lysan.
Zwende is Arch-Mage of the mages guild and hero of Cyrodiil, she's pretty badass. Probably my favorite character. I'm actually working on a quest mod that continues the mage's guild line because I like playing her so much. ;3; I'm thinking I might take Zwende through SI up the Dementia side.
Ysierre was going to become the Hero of Cyrodiil, but she ended up becoming the new Madgod instead, and decided to say payce out to Cyrodiil. XD;
Wyl is a female Imperial Paladin and a very big change for me since I typically play stay back and shoot arrows/spells sneaky types. I'm playing through Knights of the Nine with Wyl, and am also looking for other quests I may want to do with her, as well.

Oblivion gates have preset "random" spawn points. There's a chance a random gate will spawn as the character approaches but not all the time. However, you can close all of the ones that DO pop up, although they have a chance of respawning after a while, I believe.

Keska 05-22-2008 12:15 PM

Thank you very much for the answer. I think I'll try and close them as I find them then. I tried closing one but couldn't figure out how to get to the tower so I wasn't sure if that meant that we couldn't close them at all or this gate was just a bit tricky. I'll have to look at it again.

I didn't realize that there was a modding community for Oblivion. I only have it for the Xbox so I haven't really looked into it for the PC. It sounds really cool that there are mods for it. I may just look into it. It seems interesting.

I only have the one character that I'm currently playing with. She's a dark elf who uses blades, archery, and magic. I'm a fan of striking from a distance. But I brought blade up for when people get close. It also saves my magic at times.

When I first started playing the game I had two characters. One was meant to be an assassin and the other was supposed to be a mage. At times things would get a bit confusing. This was also due to the fact that a friend of mine had two characters on the same game. So I'm keeping things simple this time around and just playing with the one character right now.

Arkeyla 05-23-2008 12:46 AM

I'm replaying Morrowind again, heavily modded of course so the graphics are close to Oblivion style! I do a bit of modding myself, but generally making clothing (well, texturing - I can't make meshes, no software for it) and creating houses for myself.

Normally I play hybrid characters, but this time I have three going - pure mage, thief and fighter style. It's actually proving more fun - things that I am used to doing with my hybrids I can't necessarily do as easily with a pure, so I have to think more. It's certainly increased the playability for me even more, as well as the myriad of mods I have...

geishaberry 05-23-2008 01:45 AM

@Keska: Yeah I found that having more than one character on the xBox was kind of confusing, whereas, on the PC I can easily play a number of different characters with different specialties and less hybridization - I think it's that I dislike playing FPS-style games with a console controller. Mouse and keyboard all the way. XD

@Arkeyla: Have you looked into Blender? It's a little confusing to start on (but so was photoshop), but is the best open source 3D rendering program out there and it has a lot of features that make it useful for modding TES III/IV stuff.

I've recently been interested in playing Morrowind, but I've heard that it's not very friendly to play on if you have a newer system (the highest resolution available is still very low, stuff like that). TES IV was my first Elder Scrolls game.

Keska 05-23-2008 02:25 PM

@ Arkeyla: That's neat that you can get Morrowind graphics close to Oblivion graphics with modding. I'm always amazed at the mods people can do with games.

That's really neat that you can do mods. I've never tried to. For some reason the whole thought of it always seemed hard to me.

@ geishaberry: Yes, on the Xbox it does get confusing. I would imagine that having multiple characters on the PC is way easier.

See I'm the opposite way. I find it easier to play FPS-style games with a controller. I have such a hard time with the keyboard and mouse. I can play with a keyboard and mouse but I'm much better with a controller.

Arkeyla 05-25-2008 04:07 AM

@geishaberry - The whole problem there is cash flow. I don't have a lot of spare money for programs like that... unless by some chance Blender happens to be free?

@Keska - it is, isn't it! *grin* Though I would show you a little piccy of some of my characters so you can see how gorgeous they are...

And here's what the view looks like now when leaving Balmora to go to Moonmoth...

Keska 05-25-2008 08:41 PM

Wow. Those graphics are lovely. I really like how your characters look. Very spiffy.

I wish my computer was fast enough for Oblivion. It isn't, though. I have to play on 360. I don't have an Elite or HD, so the game runs kind of slowly. :[

Oh well. If Bethesda ends up making TES5, I'm not getting it unless I get it for PC.

I've heard rumors that the next Elder Scrolls game is going to be an MMO. Honestly, seeing as how, with the exception of World of Warcraft, franchise-based MMOs have flopped or completely killed franchises, I'm a bit concerned. Especially since, while I love Bethesda, their most recent games borrow a little too liberally from other sources (Oblivion from LotR and Fallout 3 from Bioshock, imo).

Arkeyla: Yes! Blender is free! Open source programs are always free. X) Since it's a python based program, there may be a few things you also have to install for it too work, but it's not too bad.

Arkeyla 05-29-2008 07:25 AM

I have Python anyway for Wrye Mash, so that's not a problem. Now all I need to do is find time to learn how to use it!

Pkero 05-29-2008 01:49 PM

Geisha, imo, they should keep it offline. If they make a TES MMO, they should make it a seperate game, like "The Elder Scrolls: Online" or something.

The good thing about a TES MMO would be its ability to be a MUCH larger. They could probably include all the provinces. So we'd have Morrowind, Cyrodiil, Hammerfell, etc. in ONE game. The only problem with online is that modding would be placed at 0, and if they put it offline/online, you'd have a Diablo 2 situation.

Arkeyla 05-29-2008 02:44 PM

I athink an MMO is a wretched idea. It would be terrible for such a great series to be squished by an MMO and the packs of idiots you just KNOW are going to ruin your game experience... Guild Wars anyone?

geishaberry 05-29-2008 04:20 PM

I totally agree. It would be super exciting to get to play in places like the Valenwood and Hammerfell, but I think if I had to do it via MMORPG, I would rather the MMO be an unnumbered side project while people work on the main game (like Final Fantasy XI, which, for the record, is the worst timesink MMORPG in the history of the universe 8D).

I would love to see a game that at some point took us to Azura's plane of oblivion. I actually thought about maybe some day making a mod of it for Oblivion buuuut I think that would be a lot of work.

Pkero 05-29-2008 11:17 PM

xD I don't want to learn how to use the TES Construction Set. Too much work for me. <_<

I think they should have a TES game that works something like Steam, but not as crappy. They have the basic textures and stuff on a disc and you play the game on the disc, but then you connect to the internet and it loads every region, but keeps the one-player experience by having your character on the disk and having no actual Multiplayer Online play. Therefore, you could have a gigantic single-player RPG with plotlines all over the place, new quests and items, as well as expansion packs for plots, and you could mod because your character would load from the disc and not the server.

If it could be done, it'd be awesome. ;P

Arkeyla 05-30-2008 12:20 AM

geisha - someone is actually working on a mod for that! Scroll down the page until you see 'Moonshadow'. It's being worked on for Oblivion!

Pkero 05-30-2008 12:42 PM

Wow. That's REALLY nice.

Arkeyla 05-30-2008 05:01 PM

Vality is a great modder - I have just DLd the tree mods for MW, and am loving it. Stupid thing... I had too many mods, which stuffed up my game, so I have had to do a reinstall and now have to re-find all the mods I can't live without!

It's sad, but some of my faves I can't get anymore... a brilliant modder has had work stolen, and been accused of theft, which is totally untrue, and was so upset by it she took her site down... hopefully she'll answer my email so I can get some back somehow! The thing is, that the person who accused her, I have a feeling was the one who stole her work and is trying to cover their arse. I could be wrong, but I would not be surprised to find I am right.
