Welcome to Daily Topix! I thought it would be fun to have a place to discuss something specific every day. The topic will change (hopefully) every 24 hours or so. I just thought it might be fun to have a place to discuss myriad of topics, basically whatever hits my consciousness and sticks.

How does it work you ask? I will post a new topic for discussion every night around midnight...give or take and we will discuss it for the next 24 hours. Once a new topic is posted you MUST STOP discussing the previous one and you MUST STAY ON TOPIC! No excess chatter in this thread, that's what Cirque is for. ;)

Everyone is welcome to participate. All points of view are welcomed and encouraged on any subject but please make sure you respect everyone's right to their own opinion. We want to keep it civil and respectful! Anyone who takes it too far and gets belligerent or starts flaming will be asked to leave.

Today's Topic is: Obscure holidays. Did you celebrate Cinco De Mayo? Do you celebrate any holidays that aren't mainstream? If so, what are they and what do you to celebrate them?

Ok I am all set up and I will start...

For some inexplicable reason I am obsessed with those smooth seashells that have a pattern almost like leopard spots. It's very odd, I don't know why I keep buying them. I have them all over the house. I have a big jar filled with them. I can't pass them by without getting one.

As an artist I get little obsessions I like to call passing fancies. Right now I am really interested in birds nests and butterflies.

I am always obessessed with coffee too.

ToriKat 05-03-2008 06:07 AM

*thinks about her obsessions* I must say...I have an odd obsession with pens and pencils. It could have been thanks to my desire to collect all sorts of pencils with designs and decorations on them as a kid. Now, while I'm not looking for the shiny pencils with animal toppers, I'm constantly buying Pentel, Bic, Papermate, Pilot, and others...I use them so it's not like they're going to waste. But I can't put my finger on why I love standing around the office supply section of stores. ^^;

Then there's Korean dramas and movies.

Food. (Gluttony would be my sin! D: )

Guys in suits and uniforms...

John Grisham novels...

...is this normal? xD

Blondheart 05-03-2008 06:14 AM

It's absolutely normal! I would imagine the reason you are attracted to pens and pencils stems from a desire to create!

I am obsessed with travel accessories. Especially the kind from when the turn of the century when it was popular for the English to go to India. There is just something about that...it's so classy to travel like that!

ToriKat 05-03-2008 06:25 AM

xD Well, I do write and draw with them! *nodnod* My backpack has about...twenty so I can just dive my hand in and start doing what I want to or need to. ^^

Travel accessories? What kind exactly? I'm not quite sure I know what they are. ^^;

Blondheart 05-03-2008 06:33 AM

Old suitcases, steamer trunks, labels that show where you have been. They would have fancy cases with travel toiletries made of crystal and sterling. You name it, I love that kind of thing. Not to mention all the kakhi trousers and skirts and the white blouses...sigh~ I was born too late.

I do think that what we collect and what we become fascinated or obsessed with has a direct reflection on who we are and where our focus is at any given time. That is why I picked that for today's topic. It's really interesting to delve into our pschological selves in that way.

ToriKat 05-03-2008 07:09 AM

Ah, I see! All I could think of involving travel accessories were...like...travel sized toothpastes and the like. *coughs*

How curious! What do you think your obsession with coffee is due to? :D

Blondheart 05-03-2008 07:38 AM

Back then they didn't use toothpaste anyway, they used tooth powder.

Um I think the coffee thing stems from happy memories of coffee...my grandma always drank coffee when I was little, and I really loved her. She raised me for the most part. My friend Mary Ellen and I used to sit on our front porch and drink coffee a lot and talk about important things. I used to go out for coffee with our drama troup in college. I was in a coffee shop when I got the book on making teddy bears way back when that pretty much changed the course of my life...there is a lot going on with coffee for me.

Apocrypha 05-03-2008 01:17 PM

As for me, I have two main obsessions: Collecting pens and erasers, and books. XD

I am addicted in pens that have a very dark ink, and I am constantly looking for one. XD So, I buy pens and compare it to the darkest that I have. If it does not beat the darkness of the darkest, it goes straight to my pen box. XDDDDDDD

I am also addicted in collecting erasers. Rubber erasers, dust-free erasers, you name it. XD I always think that I need new erasers, so I buy. XD Erasers that I've bought are now in my eraser box, and I think I have around 15. XD

Ever since when I was I kid, I loved books. So, when I have enough money, I buy a book.

@Blondheart: Collecting travel accessories are nice. You get to remember what happened on your travel, and keeping a piece of memory with you. :D

@ToriKat: We're almost the same. XDDD

Blondheart 05-03-2008 07:38 PM

I love books, I have SO many books. I don't really collect pens. I have a whole vase full that have fluffy maribou tops but those are more decorative.

The travel accessories I am so in love with are all antique. I must have been a world traveler in a past life.

Blondheart 05-04-2008 04:58 AM

Okies today's topic is posted!

ToriKat 05-04-2008 05:37 AM

*ponders*

I guess I would have to say I'm skeptical about its existence. Just one? How does it live so long? If it reproduced, why is it so hard to find them? I think there's a possibility...there was a creature like it in prehistoric times, but I don't think there is one now. ^^;

Blondheart 05-04-2008 05:41 AM

By contrast...this is one of the few things I do believe in. I am pretty much a skeptic when it comes to a lot of other cryptozoological creatures reported. But the thing with lake monster is they all are in the same ten degree lattitude on the planet, they all live in extremely cold water. They all live in nearly perfect, unspoiled ecosystems...so yeah I think Nessie might be real. I do think there is more than one though. I also think they have an outlet to the ocean and they don't stay in Loch Ness all the time. Plus being half scottish...I want it to be true!

ToriKat 05-04-2008 05:51 AM

I want it to be true...because I want to see Nessie! :D

I just reckoned with all the invasive technology we have in this day and age, they would be able to find her already. I don't know much about the topic...but I am interested in knowing more. x3

Blondheart 05-04-2008 06:19 AM

There are a lot of factors that play into why they may not have found her/them. If they are able to migrate to the open ocean using tunnels then they wouldn't always be around. Every time someone has gone looking they have used active sonar and never passive...however there have been some tantalizing hits on radar and sonar a few times. Loch Ness is really deep, it has underwater storms and is just FILLED with peat moss, which makes visibility very very low. In fact they just recently found a ship wreck in there that has been down there for about a hundred years. Every time they have done a sonar sweep they have missed it...so if you could miss something as big and stationary as a shipwreck, who knows...

Apocrypha 05-04-2008 01:15 PM

I believe in Nessie. I think it is hard for people to imagine of such monster without seeing one. I have to agree with what Blondheart, maybe there has some underground tunnel in which Nessie can pass through. It may be way down below the Loch Ness, and leading under the sea, where little is known.

If Nessie can live in extremely cold temperatures, then they survived the ice age. XD

Blondheart 05-05-2008 03:30 AM

Yeah Loch Ness is huge, and riddled with caves. There are a lot of variables that could make it possible for something to live there. I don't think that's it's a plesiosaur though. Even though I wish it was because that would be cool. But they were air breathers so if that is what it was, then they either evolved or died off. If they were still there we would be surfacing for air and people would see them all the time.

Edit: A new topic has been posted!

ToriKat 05-05-2008 05:16 AM

D: What a cruel topic. xD

I had a crush back in elementary school. Second till sixth grade. He had moved away one year only to return again. My memory's kind of failing me at the moment...but I think it was fourth grade? It was interesting how there was always a 50% or 30% chance he wouldn't be in my class...but he was. xD

I don't know if he ever liked me. :/ We never really talked. One year, on the last day of school, one girl was teasing him, and when I looked over, she was like, oh, that's right, you liiiiike him. And I was like O_o;; because I didn't think ANYONE knew.

Looking back...this is WRONG...but I kind of think he was gay. ^^; He was obsessed with Sylvester Stallone. He had a ton of pictures of him on all of his things. I remembered a lot of shirtless ones. Every time we wrote a paper on someone we admired or liked...that's who he picked. I really don't know how to explain that feeling that he was never really interested in girls. xD

Blondheart 05-05-2008 05:27 AM

It's not a cruel topic! :XD It is a funny one though. Just be happy I didn't ask about your first kiss!

My first crush was a guy named Kevin in 6th grade. But sadly he liked a girl who had a lot of arm pit hair. I think she probably turned out to be a lesbian. At least that is what I am telling myself! :sarcasm:

I had a serious crush on a gay guy in high school, but I didn't figure out that he was gay til yearssssssss later. I had a thing for a guy who owned an art gallery in my twenties who was bi. He asked me out but I couldn't do it. He was just so beautiful, it was appropriate that he owned a gallery since he was a work of art too. Sigh~

ToriKat 05-05-2008 05:33 AM

*snickers* I wouldn't have a response for that since I haven't had my first yet. 8D

O_O I actually got giggly reading the part about it being appropriate for him owning an art gallery. xD

Blondheart 05-05-2008 05:41 AM

I have dated some amazingly attractive men in my life.

Winter Wind 05-05-2008 05:55 AM
