Prince Caspian

So, I went to see Prince Caspian today and thought it was just so-so. I'm afraid I kept comparing it to the book and it just came up short. It didn't help that I REALLY don't like the actors cast as Susan, Lucy and Edmund. Peter is okay, but the others just don't match my vision of them. Susan, for example, is supposed to be extremely beautiful with black hair. Lucy is supposed to be only so-so in looks, but with blonde hair. Edmund and Peter weren't really described all that much, but somehow the Edmund actor isn't quite up to snuff either, though I can't put my finger on it.

Knerd 05-17-2008 12:17 AM

I wasn't a big fan of the first movie, so I don't know how much I'm going to like this one. I probably won't see it in theatres. It's easier to wait until it comes out on DVD instead.

But I really am happy that the producers are going to try to go through all the books. At least this is introducing a whole new generation to the Chronicles of Narnia.

Red Calypso 05-17-2008 12:19 AM

*nods* I am glad of that. So, for the sake of the actors' ages, I'm assuming Voyage of the Dawn Treader is next, then The Silver Chair? Do they intend to do The Magician's Nephew? If so, that one really should have been first.

Knerd 05-17-2008 01:35 PM

I'm assuming that's how they'll order it. That way the actors can age naturally, and they don't have to worry about re-casting.

But I don't know if there has been an official announcement yet...

The Mouse 05-17-2008 03:59 PM

I saw it last night. I thought it was pretty decent, though not as good as the first one.

Regarding the whole movie-v.-book argument, I'd prefer to just not get into that. There are many reasons why the movie can never be exactly like the book, and there are many reasons why the movie will never be as good as the book, so I'm just going to leave it alone. There's no point arguing myself into a hole about an issue that has no plausible solution, and I'm especially not going to fuss about something over which I have no control.

The first movie, "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," has its merits. It was entertaining and it had brilliant effects. Maybe it wasn't what you imagined; maybe it was. It doesn't make a difference--it's all what the producers/directors wanted. The same thing goes with "Prince Caspian." It was a great movie in and of itself, and it made a great sequel to the movie that came before it. I like to look at movies that are based on books as just that--based on the book, not representing the book itself.

I think they did an okay just staying faithful to the story. Sure there are going to be things that don't add up to your imagination. That is why people like books better than movies. Things in books are exactly as you choose to see them so that will always be a better choice for you. Movies are never ever going to look like the story in your head. I think they've cast much better actors than adaptations have in the past and Weta has outdone themselves with the creatures and the armor this time around.

Red Calypso 05-17-2008 05:05 PM

Oh, the special effects were really good, especially the griffins. The centaurs' movement was kind of off once or twice though.

Nemui 05-17-2008 10:40 PM

i hate comparing books to movies. i mean yes i rea the book and
ya i thought the movie was missing some.but overall i thought
it was played out very well.

I saw it last night with my boyfriend and i thought he wouldn't enjoy it an he actually did!

I thought everyone they chose was casted well, although i just cant bring myself to like the girl who played Lucy.

although i was extremely annoyed with the Spanish accent Caspian had.

overall i thought it was worth seeing..i wasn't too fond of the centaur makeup this round it didn't look as good as the first movie.
All the other creatures looked good i just didnt like the way the Centaurs looked.

and i was mad that Warwick Davis was bad that was wrong..
i loved the little jokes in the movie as well.
the mouse was adorable.

Ashe 05-18-2008 06:18 AM

It hasn't even come out yet where I live.
I doubt it will be out until maybe july or august.

Kiwii Yamz 05-18-2008 10:21 AM

I never read the book so i wont have a problem with just seeing it for what the director wanted to show it as. I love to see how poeple vision books. you know those little pieces of books that writers don't fill in so you imagination can. Anyway i'm looking forward to seeing this movie cause i love the first one. better then the bbc virson anyway. and there a actor doing a voice in it Eddie izzard. I really just watching it for him.

Sho-Shonojo 05-18-2008 03:48 PM

I haven't read the book in years and I'm glad because when we saw it last night my sister said that a lot of it wasn't in the book at all. From my stand point though I can say that the movie stands rather well on it's own. It's a good movie and you don't need to read the book to understand what is going on. I'm glad I didn't read the book again right before I saw it, but I defiantely do want to read it again now.

.ieatkitties. 05-19-2008 02:23 AM

I haven't read the book, so my oppinion is strictly on the movie itself.
I thought it was really nice, and didn't get boring at anytime. I actually liked this one better than the first. :]

@Kiwii; Oh wow, that was Eddie Izzard? x]
I knew that voice was firmilar, I just couldn't remember where I'd heard it before.

GarretValentine 05-22-2008 03:38 PM

Personally, I liked the movie a lot. Maybe it's because I didn't read the book yet.
I guess as a Computer Animation / Visual Effect student, I was paying more of attention to visuals..
But I would love to read the book!! ...As soon as I am saved from all the school work I need to do.

-Tear- 05-22-2008 06:30 PM

I haven't went to see this movie yet, been too busy with work and studying for finals. It looks like it'll be a good movie so I might go out and see it this weekend.

Colours 05-23-2008 02:46 AM

I liked the second one better because of more action. x);
hehehee.
I don't really remembered what happened in the books because I read them when I was little (as well as the original film series), but overall okay.
The first movie didn't really interest me. *A*;;

Seiki Nova 05-26-2008 11:00 PM

I didn't like how much darker this one was from the first one : (

Rusalka 05-27-2008 02:04 AM

I seen the movie Saturday. I liked it, though I felt something was missing... but then I really don't remember the book. I was meaning to reread it before going to see it but my mom randomly took me to the movie without telling me which we were going to see. But whatever.

I really don't mind the actors who played Susan, Lucy and Peter. But I really dislike the selection of Edmond. I remember the book to the The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was the first book I read of the series as a school project back in grade four. Who they chose for Edmond varies very much from my imaginings of him and really ruined the part for me.

Julia Caesar 05-27-2008 02:22 AM

I like it better then the first movie.

There was more action and more fighting. I didn't like that they had a sort of Romance between Prince Caspian and Susan because this is not true of the books and I always imagined his first and only love was his wife. He's kind of dorky in the books so, Ben Barnes (Prince caspian) being hot in the movie was slightly off the mark, but in no way disappointing. In fact it made it quite worth going. I really like the way the the guy who plays Edmund acts. He seems a lot like Edmund. However I don't like Lucy's actress since her nose is way to turned up considering how Lucy is. Susan is pretty okay. Not as tall and as beautiful as I envisioned her, but she does a fine job making you like her.

Whatever though I can't wait for the third one to come out.

Lipgloss 05-29-2008 03:39 PM

I have not seen it yet. But I'm guessing I will enjoy it.

Since I quite liked the first one.
I haven't really read the books..
Well I read half of one and bought another but never read it :x

I don't even think it is out here yet
Should be soon. I saw a poster in the cinema advertising it..

Hmmm =3

fiarra 05-29-2008 04:03 PM

I've found that when seeing movies based on books.. it's best to just pretend the book doesn't exist at all! Luckily it's been so long since I read the Narnia books that I didn't have that problem.

As a movie, I enjoyed it SO MUCH MORE than the first one. The visual effects were so much smoother and it wasn't distracting like in the first. And I like how the 4 kids have matured. The little girl is gonna be hawt when she gets older.

I think the most stellar quality of this movie was the costume design. With every new outfit revealed I was just more in love.

DreamEmpress 06-02-2008 03:44 AM

There is a lot of missing sequences that connect this one to the next but that is because it is a movie. Just in case if they can't complete the third film, there is no wholes in it. I try explaining that to die hard narnian fans, but they never listen lol...

It does get darker as the books go a long and so the movie will get darker.

I liked it. It is well done and I really enjoyed the characters. Nothing bad I can say about it really.

Julia Caesar 06-06-2008 02:43 AM

I actually found that "The Magicians Nephew" is the darkest.

Knerd 06-06-2008 07:16 PM

^ Even darker than The Silver Chair? And The Last Battle?
I've always thought of those two to be the most sinister and adult-based books in the series.

Angel Naomi 06-06-2008 09:17 PM

I know what you mean. I haven't even read the book and I didn't like the cast in the first movie. Peter, yeah, he was cute but the others aren't really visually pleasing. I know they're suppose to be like ordinary kids, but I think there could have been better actors for it. Their acting is very good, don't get me wrong. I just had to get use to them visually. Prince Caspian I was already use to it so I thought the movie was fantastic. Prince Caspian *drool* was freakin hot XDD I loved the movie and I give it a 8/10.

Julia Caesar 06-06-2008 09:28 PM

Knerd: Actually you are right "The Silver Chair" Is the darkest, but I still think The Magicians Nephew is darker then "The Last battle".

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has it's dark parts too. I forget which island it is, but the one after Deathwater island... I think it was Blackwater. That was so fricken scary to me.

Prince Caspian only seemed dark in the movie because of the lighting I think. Too me it didn't have many dark parts except the add-ons.
