Event Items:

I'm not sure if someone has posted anything about this before but I find it very annoying when people put the things you're supposed to collect during events in their signatures. It's very disappointing when you see a snowflake or an orchid in someone's signature only to click on it and end up at some youtube video or whatever.

Bunai 05-19-2008 03:29 AM

yeah
i ran into that

i really dislike it

what if one of those links lead to a trogan site?

clock 05-19-2008 04:25 AM

I'm pretty sure the real ones will say "You found a Bud" if you hover the mouse over it for a second. x3 Fake ones will say nothing or have a link to youtube.

I don't think anyone would be dumb enough to link to a Trojan site. They'd probably be banned for that.

Roxzie Roller 05-19-2008 05:51 AM

It has been a common practice to trick people into watching Rick Astley's Never gonna give you up video on YouTube, or whatever media site of preference, and I thought it was funny, but I can see it can be quite annoying, especially for people who seem to collect orchids and buds much slower than others.

Tre Le Coco 05-19-2008 06:11 AM

Riv told me this guys:
Quote:

http://www.menewsha.com/forum/profil...do=editoptions
Thread display options > Visible post elements (first box) > uncheck "Show Signatures"
That should solve the problem :)

@ Roxzie - its called a rick roll ;) 4chan meme

CK 05-19-2008 06:19 AM

If you ever see someone linking somewhere malicious please report them. They will be dealt with immediately.

I disabled signatures for the event. I highly recommend it as I miss far fewer orchids or buds that way.

Fabby 05-19-2008 07:33 AM

I really see nothing wrong with this. I got tricked once, was amused, and then didn't get tricked again because it's quite easy to tell between a real and fake flower.

I definitely disagree with what others have been saying about making a rule against it. It's harmless, really, and if someone does attempt to make it harmful then they get banned like they would at any other time.

Krissy 05-19-2008 09:43 AM

Honestly, as long as it's the youtube link, I don't mind it. It's so much better then the moving web browser thing with the song. D<

Angel Spirit Girl 05-19-2008 12:17 PM

I was never really fooled with fake tokens or trading NPCs in people's signatures for the other events.

However, with the change in how the tokens - orchids and orchid buds - display / are distributed on the pages this event, it is very hard to tell the difference between the real and fake tokens.

Plus, you have to go much slower and be more careful not to miss them.

I may just disable signatures for the event - I just hope I remember to turn them on again.

Thank you Tre for showing me how to do that.

PS : Zigbig, I really like the pixel kitty in your signature.

TelstelNSG1 05-19-2008 01:09 PM

hm i hate that too but yeah just hover over the image
and another thing the buds and orchids normally wouldn't be placed in a perfect spot they are placed all over place so that's my tip but hovering is your best option hun ;)

zigbigadorlube 05-19-2008 03:22 PM

Thanks for all the great feedback guys. I guess it's not as much of a nuisance to some as it is to others... I guess the easiest thing to do would be to disable signatures for a bit. I forgot that you could actually do that... ^^;

Pepziey 05-19-2008 03:40 PM

I clicked on one one time...i really belived that it was a real :/ It was a link to a film from 80 -.-'
The song was like *TURN IT OF FOR F*****G H**L !!!!! * Thats anoying ! ;)

Amo_Angelus 05-19-2008 08:37 PM

I think it should be against the rules.

Knerd 05-19-2008 09:18 PM

It's a nuisance, yes, but linking you to a funny video isn't harming anyone. If it bothers you, you can simply disable signatures for the duration of the event.

But as CK said - Please report anyone who is using the orchid/bud image to link you to a malicious webpage. If they put the link in their signature with the obvious intent to harm members, then we'll take care of them.

Amo_Angelus 05-19-2008 09:33 PM

No, but nor is spam and that's against the rules. Since when did something actually have to be harmful before the staff took action against it. It is annoying and it is interfering with peoples enjoyment of the event which is why a lot of the rules were instituted the last I heard, so people could enjoy the site.

And if someone links you to a malicious site you're not going to hang around and say "Oh I'll just report them" when your hardware is being invaded are you? No, you're going to be fighting it and so loose the link.

Yes you can disable signatures, but you shouldn't have to and that's my point. But you know, I know you guys don't really care about it, so I'll not argue it.

Spam is an abuse of the gold system - People are earning gold by posting nonsense, and therefore it is harmful to everyone who works to gain their gold honestly. I actually consider that malicious.

We have no rules against putting links in your signature. I'm sure that a lot of people would be disappointed if we told them that they couldn't link to their hangout thread, art shop, or DA portfolio. If we told users that they couldn't post item images, then I believe it would only be fair to get rid of all images and links as well.

When a problem is discovered, it's taken care of. But I see no reason to make all links and images illegal just out of that paranoia.

Trust me - I care. But this problem can easily be solved by unclicking the "Show Signature" box in your accounts. I myself did so at the very beginning of the event. If such a solution is easily available, why not take advantage of it? That way you are no longer bothered, and those members who still wish to view signatures are able to do so.

Fabby 05-19-2008 11:15 PM

Why are we suddenly so concerned about linking to viruses?
Might I point out that you're just as much at risk as you always were? It's just as easy to put in a fake banner as it is a fake orchid. You may as well get rid of all image links in signatures.

I'd also like to point out that while it's certainly possible to get a virus by clicking an infected link, you actually have to download a file before you'll get most viruses.

Bunai 05-20-2008 01:34 AM

when it comes to Event Pop ups

"i should check the link before i click"
is not something you think about. until you have run into fakes in signatures.

i dont just mindlessly click links/banners in peoples signatures. because those, i do check first, and even Google. and there is no gain from it.

unlike events. where you expect to be rewarded because that is how the Event should go.
you are following the directions and you are not expecting to be lead on.

it may be harmless, but it is disruptive.

Krissy 05-20-2008 11:22 AM

I really don't find it a huge problem in the first place. How are the mods going to deal with people who have, in their rights, an image with a link in their signature. It leads to youtube/mene main forum, or nothing at all, and they are within their rights to do so.

Whether it be disruptive or not, if something as silly as flowers in the signature gets banned, then it may just lead into a huge riot.

Tell me, how would a mod deal with this situation if it wasn't allowed? Users would argue that it is under the size limit, nor is it image that isn't allowed. For, if it's not allowed in a signature, then why, pray tell, is it flaunted all over the website?

Tell me, how would the mods deal with this? xP

Bunai 05-21-2008 05:22 AM

i have no idea what direction you are taking

i am just referring to EVENTs
when this happens.

Kitty Paine 05-21-2008 05:29 AM

All I've seen so far are Orchid Bouquets. Which I find to be quite beautiful actually.

CK 05-21-2008 06:44 AM

I think most people are starting to cave to the Menewshan population's general disgust/disapproval of fake-orchids/buds in signatures and removing them. Fewer people are falling for them now, which seems to take away some of the fun, too.

ellaangelus 05-26-2008 08:15 AM

yeah i also clicked many times...

amyrex2 05-27-2008 02:10 AM

I thought it was cute the first dozen times, then I figured out how to turn off signatures. I didn't see anything really bad just the rick rolled thing and a couple of ha ha got you things.
