Incorrect Spelling >:(

A pet peeve of mine is people that don't spell check stuff they write!

Especially where forums are concerned it's so annoying... how much effort does it really take?
Most important though is the Title, I've seen so many mis-spelled titles here at Mene and it drives me nuts! I wish I could edit their posts :D

Do you have the same pet peeve?
What are some of your pet peeves?

Moogle 06-05-2008 05:02 AM

n0 eye dun hav da saim peht peeve as j00 doo.

:XD
Nah, but sometimes the excessive chat speak does get annoying. :stare: It's like you can at least throw some kind of grammar in there! >:'O

Kalliste 06-05-2008 05:04 AM

Gosh sms or chat speak is even worse!!
I can understand when your texting someone but if you have unlimited characters and a full keyboard in front of you there is no excuse not to use it! :P

Meggie~ 06-05-2008 05:07 AM

*ahem.... Hides in corner*

erm.. I usually mispell like all the time! It's just a habit because its easier to type lol
and I know its wrong but I've been doing it for years (not on these forums, but other forums) and I just can't help it hehe :insane:

believe me, there are a lot of people out there that do it, not just me, and yes you will always see them around. Also my sister ALWAYS corrects me if i spell something wrong or spell something wrong on purpose. So I'm learning =3

KeiKei Shunu 06-05-2008 05:09 AM

Haha. I get so pissed. >.> If you make a mistake, sure. I mean, not everyone has to be obsessive about spell checker. One mistake out of a whole bunch of words is perfectly fine.

But if you KNOW your spelling is atrocious, USE THE DAMNED SPELLCHECK.

Ugh. I get so annoyed when reading my boyfriend's casual typing. >.> So many grammar and spelling mistakes. I know he's pretty bad at English, but still! He'll use the wrong form of they're/their/there etc. UGH. 12th graders shouldn't be doing that. >.> He uses spell check for papers, why not casual writing?

And the use of "u", "r", and stuff like that? NO. STOP.

English was not made to be slaughtered mercilessly. :c

I understand having trouble with some words. I do too sometimes. But for fuck's sake... if you're in high school or higher, I would think you've had enough education to LEARN TO SPELL. Or use the spell check...

urgh. I could go on for HOURS.

as I said before.... *hides in corner* haha these are the sorts of messages I'm scared of :(

ERGH. "Ebonics".. Jesus fuck.

I hate that it's turning into an accepted language. Am I the only one who thinks that it turning into an accepted language is racist?

I mean, "oh, it's ok, s/he's black. S/he can't speak proper English". What the hell? Especially since it's mostly Liberals who are accepting it. >.> Part of why I can't stand knee-jerk liberals. They don't THINK. And with being "politically correct" they end up more racist then most people are.

URGH.

Not to mention, I find it amusing that "Spanglish" and any mixture of an Asian language and English are "NOT OK. LEARN ENGLISH".

@Meggi -- But, as you said, you're learning. And you're typing well. ;3 It's all about time and place. If you're talking to people who don't mind it, and in a place where it's acceptable, there's no problem. ;3
But people who talk in forums like that, or even there are some who use chatspeak in PAPERS (I cannot understand that at ALL), are the ones who bug me.
As long as you try, I'm happy. :3 I get pissed only when someone is blatantly not caring.

lol oh yay, I try but not too hard :P

KeiKei Shunu 06-05-2008 05:24 AM

Haha. As long as there's some trying.

Being a nice person also helps me "forgive" it. ;3

My phone doesn't have a keyboard, I have to go through each key and do each letter and it's very annoying. But even I don't use "txttlk" when sending a text. I'd rather spell "through" rather than "thru" or "someone" rather than "sum1". It takes much more time, but eh...I don't care. It irritates me when my boss texts me with text talk. She doesn't do it often anymore though. Once she realized that I wasn't doing it, she must have though she better not do it back, haha! I know, it's odd.

On the forums, I like to use a bit of text talk here and there. When I'm just being a bit random or when I feel like throwing in "lol" or "luls~". C;

Ayaji 06-05-2008 05:33 AM

I realized recently how bad I am at mixing up my letters when I am typing (I'm mildly dyslexic) I often put the 'i' and the 'e' backwards in words, and I misspell a lot of words like 'community' and 'sentence'. Luckily, Firefox has a spell-check built in^^

I hate when people don't take the time to double check their writing and fix errors, or people who talk in chat-speak. I always double-check everything I write, and it helps me notice if I forgot to capitalize something or missed some punctuation. After all, it only takes a second to spell out 'you are' instead of putting 'u r.' Things like that are one of the reasons I prefer Menewsha to Gaia, because poor grammar and spelling is widely accepted on Gaia as the norm. I'm a Grammar Nazi in my guild on Gaia, and since I am a crew member, I have the power to edit posts (I do so quite often actually.)

@Jennifer
I don't use text-talk when I am sending a text message on my phone either, unless I am in a huge rush (like when I send an emergency text at work but can't let the customers/boss see that I am texting) I occasionally am forced to shorten things to fit an entire message though, because of the character limit.

YES! Thank goodness for Firefox! A lot of you may not know, but it's saved me quite a bit, heh.

fl3ur de lis 06-05-2008 06:00 AM

oh speelin?
is ntoot imptortnt 2 mee

Haha, just kidding.
It bugs me a lot too;
I've always been a spelling nazi XD

comotized 06-05-2008 06:03 AM

aw long as i understand what someone is saying I could care less how it's spelled. But that's probably because I'm a crappy speller.

I use spellcheck quite often but i still end up screwing things up :P

Kalliste 06-05-2008 06:29 AM

Glad to see I'm not the only one :)
I occasionally spell things wrong or leave out words (I'm actually quite bad for that) but I make an attempt to read back over what I've written to make sure it all makes sense and is spelt correctly.

There are always some words I'll never get right though :)

Jennifer 06-05-2008 06:35 AM

Kalliste; we all can't be perfect. C; At least you can say you do try though! Right? Right!

Kalliste 06-05-2008 06:37 AM

True... I always spell technical as technicial for some reason which is really annoying because I work in technical Support so I always have to go back and fix it hehe.

And receive or recieve... I never remember which is right :P

Jennifer 06-05-2008 06:42 AM

Look back on page one, near the bottom and read my quote to help you out on that. C;

thoughtlessamaya 06-05-2008 06:54 AM

I make little mistakes here and there, and I get so angry with myself when I do so because I hate improper grammar and misspelling. And it makes it even worse is when I can't edit it, and that happens a lot. I'm ever so grateful for the "edit" button on most of the forums that I run into for my little oopsies.

But it annoys me when someone misspells or uses too many periods or questions or has just a HUGE run on sentence. I can understand big words being spelled wrong, and not everyone uses Firefox which has spell check.

Jennifer 06-05-2008 07:01 AM

You know what's funny? When people start yelling at others, "Your grammer is terrible!" or something along those lines. Notice...they spell "grammar" wrong though. C; I've seen people do it quite often. I've done it myself, but never while telling someone off about how terrible their grammar is. I mean, not even mine is perfect!

I've made that mistake myself a few times in my lifetime, and I still think its funny that I did so. And I laugh at people who make the same mistake, because its so silly of a small mistake. Not to mention that its a small one too. Only a one letter difference. :P

Jennifer 06-05-2008 07:05 AM

It is funny, isn't it? XD I chuckle quite a bit when it does happen, haha!

Another irritating thing is when people use "..." excessively.

Yes D:
Unless you're quoting what someone said in person then "..." should not be used. But if you're talking to someone via text then it just doesn't make any sense.

Jennifer 06-05-2008 07:11 AM

People do it on the forums all the time; and it's really quite annoying! There really is no use for all of it.
