True, but Asriel hints toward it at the very end of Compass.
I remember thinking that Asriel was a Hero when I was a kid. Now that I've re-read the books, I think he's a bit of a twat.

I don't recall him mentioning anything other than destroying dust, which IMO is one of the less obvious metaphors if you're not looking for it.

Well, he kills Lyra's friend Roger. And wages a somewhat selfish war against "God".

Looking at the grand scheme of things, Roger's death isn't really a bad thing. Were it not for him, Lyra wouldn't have gone down to the world of the dead to open it up.

How is it selfish?

He wanted to go against metatron and "god" for the noble reason of freeing people from their control, but he also would do it at the cost of innocent lives. It seems kind-of selfish to me to be that driven that you'll run over the rest of the world.

Well, I guess it's okay because she did leave the land of the dead something to look forward to.

Woo, His Dark Material discussion! I adored those books. Which, looking back I find kinda funny since my mother is a crazy religious Catholic.

I think my favorite character was Lee Scorsby. He was also one of the only characters to remain unbutchered by the movie.
