Jeane settled closer to him than she normally would, but she didn't comment on it. Hey, as long as he didn't tell her to go somewhere else, she didn't much care. She yawned briefly and leaned back against the couch.
"Thanks, by the way. For helping with various things over the past few weeks." |
Cal blinked. He hadn't expected that, and had no real idea as to how to reply. Such a thing had never happened before, at least not to him. Most thanks usually went to Niko instead.
"Um... Okay, I guess...?" |
Jeane just smiled, already thinking of something she could do make it up to him/help him out. However, he was saved from any more potentially embarrassing possibilities when Robin called from Ninth Circle.
|
Cal groaned slightly when he checked his phone and saw Robin's number. This time of night, that could never be a good thing.
"What?" he asked in lieu of a greeting. |
"Get your ass down here," Robin growled. "The peris have stopped giving me alcohol, so get down here and serve me." He hung up, not even giving Cal a chance to protest.
"What was that?" Jeane asked cautiously. |
Cal snorted and set his phone aside, making himself comfortable on the couch again.
"Robin is working on drinking himself stupid again," he said. "The guys at the bar aren't cooperating, so he thinks he wants me to keep giving him alcohol." He shook his head a bit. "Fuck that." |
"I don't think ignoring him is going to work. He doesn't seem like the type to be easily ignored," Jeane said, raising her eyebrows at him.
Sure enough, a few minutes later, Robin called, having clearly expected Cal to get up and run over there, or something. "Where the hell are you?" he demanded as soon as Cal picked up. |
"Clearly, I'm not there," Cal retorted. "Get yourself blind drunk on your own time." He wasn't about to get up and go to the bar just to let Robin drink himself unconscious. It would be a waste of a perfectly lazy evening.
|
"Either you get your ass down here or I filch alcohol and bring it to you and make you listen to me in your apartment," Robin grumped. "Your choice."
|
"Damn it, Goodfellow," Cal growled as he got up from the couch. He could tolerate Robin getting blind drunk at the bar. The apartment was another story all together. "Fine."
|
Robin gloated silently for a moment. "And hurry it up." And then he hung up.
"Going somewhere?" Jeane blinked, not sure if she could get up and follow him or not. He didn't sound happy, after all. Which meant it had probably been Robin calling. Which meant that Cal wasn't likely to be very happy for a while. |
"Damn puck threatened to get drunk here instead of the bar," Cal groused as he jammed his shoes on. "I don't care if he drinks himself stupid at the bar. I do care if he stumbles his way here." Once he had his shoes on, he slipped his jacket on and made sure his favorite weapons were in place. He didn't trust any of the regulars at the bar. "Stay, go, doesn't matter. Chances are I won't be back for a while."
|
Jeane hesitated for a moment before she got up, grabbing her bag and hurrying after him. "Might as well go," she said, following him towards the bar.
Ish and Robin were still having a discussion. A very loud discussion. That involved feathers being shed all over the place and a flustered-looking puck. The other peris kept a safe distance, eyeing Robin evilly. |
To say that the discussion was loud was a bit of an understatement. The argument was drowning out every other conversation in the bar, or at least it would have if any other conversations were happening. Cal could only pick out a few words amongst the shouting, but what he did hear sounded kind of interesting, since it seemed to involve Robin, the Panic, and a few choice words about monogamy and trading partners. Scowling, he walked right past the two, took of his jacket, and threw it behind the bar. He didn't immediately start dishing out booze, though.
|
Jeane followed him in, folding her own jacket and setting it on a clean portion of the bar before she set her bag on top of it. What surprised her was when Robin snatched Khalid's bottle right out of her bag.
"Khalid! This is all your fault, and I blame you for this. Entirely. If you hadn't left in the first place, this never would have happened!" Robin paused, seemed to realize what he just said, and dropped the bottle back into Jeane's hands. "What the hell?" Jeane blinked. "You just... gave it back?" "We can't own djinn, kid. Only humans can own djinn. Doesn't work with us." Robin scowled at her, and Jeane sort of hid behind Cal, still clutching her bottle. |
For a moment, it seemed like nothing would happen, and then Khalid appeared out of nowhere.
"My fault?" she demanded. "No, I don't think so, Robin, this was all your fault to begin with! It never would have gotten to this point if you hadn't kept replacing me!" She glared at him. "And you're already shit-faced drunk, so just go home." |
"Kept replacing you?" Robin snarled back. "You seem to forget who walked out on whom the first time. And don't claim that whole "my bottle changed hands and moved" shit, because I know that didn't happen for another two years."
Jeane was slowly getting more and more antsy and anxious, which was, in turn, making Ishiah angrier. And all the others in the bar were getting antsy and, for some of them, hungry. Snarling briefly, Ishiah's wings flared for a moment before flickering out of existence again, and he picked Jeane up by the back of her shirt, depositing her behind the bar next to Cal. "This is yours. Keep track of her before I have to start killing people again." |
Cal scowled but maneuvered Jeane onto one of the stools behind the counter.
"Just sit there and don't move," he told her. Then he turned back to the bar at large to keep an eye on the escalating argument. "You were going to leave again," Khalid spat at Robin, "and it's not like you would have missed me anyways!" With that, she disappeared into her bottle, effectively cutting off the conversation. |
Robin snarled something and turned to Cal, scowling fiercely. He'd just have to wait until later to correct that misunderstanding. One glance at Ish showed him that Ish was getting all wrath-y too, and he growled again as he sat in front of Cal, putting a bill down on the bar. More than enough to cover him for most of the rest of the night.
|
Cal scowled back and took the bill, replacing it with a bottle of whiskey.
"Work on that for a bit," he said. There was no way he was going to stand there and give Robin one glass after another. The puck could just as easily work on the bottle; he was going to end up drinking the whole thing anyways, Cal was sure. Once he was sure Robin was momentarily distracted by the alcohol, Cal turned to Ish. "So what was that? It didn't look like nothing," he said. |
"Nothing." Ish's wings fluttered. "Nothing you need worry about." His eyes flickered to Jeane. "Go distract her before I have to start making you pay for damages again."
Jeane was sitting on the stool, still holding her purse a bit too tightly, her nails digging into her palms. She was still unsettled, although not outright scared. |
"I haven't broken anything yet," Cal grumbled even as he moved to do what he was told. He went over and nudged Jeane. "You okay?" he asked.
|
"Yeah. Just... unsettled." Jeane smiled after a moment or two. "Am I allowed to have a drink or should I not?" She wasn't really sure what the rules were, after all. Before it had been just her and Khalid, and Khalid didn't care if she drank on occasion. But now there were pucks and peris and things.
|
"You can if you want," Cal replied. "Don't worry about it." He glanced out across the bar and glared at one of the regulars who seemed to think that it was okay to start getting rowdy again. He tried to ignore the dark satisfaction he felt when the customer cowered in his seat, or at least cowered as much as a drunk Wolf could.
|
"Thanks." Jeane poured herself a drink and sat there sipping it, slowly calming down.
"See, it is my fault," Robin spoke up after another hour. "It is. Well. Sort of. As much as it can be my fault. I'm just too attractive." |
