For once, Cal was glad he was the only one working. It meant he couldn't leave to follow Robin and beat him senseless. That didn't stop him from breaking three glasses while trying to channel his anger into something slightly more productive. This was something that even the metal beads on his wrist wouldn't help with, yet.
Jeane blinked and looked at him, moving closer to him. "Cal...?" she asked quietly. She was a little worried. Normally he wasn't that angry, at least not while she was around.
"Leave it alone, Jeane," Cal said shortly. "It's not your problem." And if he had his way, it would never become her problem. It was his burden, and he would be the one to deal with it, nobody else.
"Hey." Jeane moved over to him, resting her hand gently against his shoulder. "Calm down, please. If you want, I can take over for a few minutes. If you need to step outside." She watched him, more worried at him than what the Auphe comment meant. For now.
"No," Cal replied. Because he knew that if he was allowed outside, he might still try to catch up to Robin and beat him into the ground. It was irrational, but the puck also knew how sensitive Cal was on the subject. "Just give me a minute."
Jeane nodded and rubbed his shoulder gently before moving a few steps away to give him some room, in case he needed it. But later, she was going to ask Khalid to tell her everything she knew about the Auphe.
It took Cal more than a minute to finally calm down, and about half the bar had cleared in the meantime, but he finally got himself together enough to start working again. When closing time rolled around, he turned to Jeane.
"Want me to walk you home?" he asked. |
"If you want," Jeane said, looking over at him. "I have no idea if Khalid will be there or not, so..." She trailed off, picking up her purse.
"Assume not," Cal advised as he grabbed his jacket. "Ishiah didn't come back to close up the bar." Perfectly logical reasoning, in his mind. Opening the door, he held it for her.
Jeane nodded and followed him, waiting until he was next to her before she slipped her arm through his, taking her time walking back with him to her apartment.
"You okay?" she asked quietly. |
"As okay as I can be," Cal replied. "I still want to punch Robin's goddamn teeth out, but I think Ishiah would dock my pay for that." He carefully avoided mentioning the sensitive topic that the puck had blurted out.
Jeane nodded. "I see. Well, if you want you can spend the night...?" She made it a question to give him the choice. She certainly wouldn't mind.
Cal considered the offer for a moment. On one hand, he didn't want Jeane to have to put up with him like this, and he almost wanted to brood in silence for a while. But on the other hand, he did feel better when she was around, and that was worth the lack of solitude.
"Sure," he said after a minute. "Sounds good." |
Jeane nodded and led the way back to her apartment, making him sit once they were inside. She set her bag down before she moved behind him, starting to comb through his hair again.
Cal sighed and started to relax as Jeane combed her fingers through his hair. He had no idea why it felt so good, but he wasn't going to argue about it.
Jeane kept doing that for a little while, scratching his scalp and then moving to rub his shoulders. She wanted him relaxed, not all tense and worried about whatever Auphe thing.
"You don't have to do that, you know," Cal said after a few minutes. "Not that I don't appreciate it, because I do, but you don't have to go out of your way." He figured he knew why she was doing it, and he really did appreciate the effort, but the Auphe were always going to be a sore spot for him.
"I want to. Like I said, I like making people happy." Jeane stopped when he was relaxed enough, moving around to sit on his lap. "Better now, at least?"
Cal wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer when she settled on his lap.
"Yeah," he replied. "A lot better." |
"Good." Jeane smiled and moved closer, nuzzling his cheek briefly. "You want anything to eat or drink?" Because she knew he hadn't eaten before he was called in to work.
"Not right now," Cal replied. He'd been too wound up earlier to even think about food, and right now he just wanted to sit with Jeane. "I'll get something later, maybe." He gave her a soft kiss.
Jeane nodded and stayed there, moving closer to him and kissing him again. This was an idea she could get behind. It wasn't quite cuddling so he still had his dignity, plus the extra affection. Which she was quite sure he didn't mind.
Cal didn't mind, in fact. After his little ragefest earlier, he was quite content to sit there kissing her for a while. At this point, he was even relaxed enough not to want to beat up on Robin anymore. Temporarily, at least.
Jeane shifted so her legs were on either side of him instead, and she pressed closer to him, threading her fingers into his hair as she kissed him.
Cal blinked when he saw how bold Jeane was getting, but he was more than willing to indulge her as he returned her kiss with more enthusiasm, putting his hands on her waist and pulling her closer.
