"Just doing some research." Jeane looked at him before she started flipping through her book, looking at the pages of notes she'd left wedged between pages.
"A few hundred years, I believe," Ish said quietly, looking around. "It's very different now." Robin snorted. "You can say that again. Last time I was here, Europe didn't know this place existed." |
"Always with the research with you, lately," Cal said. "What are you trying to find that's keeping you so damn busy?" He thought she'd finished with her research on djinn, so now what?
"Europe has a bad habit of messing with things," Khalid agreed. She found a place to sit and did so, working on taking off her shoes. It was nostalgic, but she wanted to feel real sand under her feet again. |
Jeane looked over at him and bit her lower lip, clearly debating if she should tell him or not. After a moment she sighed and put her book down.
"Looking for answers that don't seem to exist." Robin hummed his agreement, looking at Khalid. "Have you already arranged where we'll be sleeping or shall I?" |
"I didn't do anything but get us here," Khalid replied. "Jeane wished for a vacation, and this is a vacation spot." True, that particular interpretation of the wish was a little petty and literal, but Khalid also hadn't been feeling very accommodating at the time.
"What's wrong?" Cal asked, pulling Jeane closer. "And don't tell me nothing, I get enough bullshit from Robin to know it when I hear it." |
Robin snorted but nodded. "Alright. I'll take care of that." For the three of them, at least. But he'd tell Jeane that she had to find her own place to stay so she wouldn't be caught surprised.
"I've been trying to find a way to release Khalid," she said quietly. "So she's no longer bound to serve whoever has her bottle." Not that Khalid knew any of this, of course. |
Khalid raised an eyebrow.
"Exactly what will you take care of?" she asked. He knew very well that she had to take care of Jeane, and that she could easily insist that he do something to help. Cal paused. "There's a way to do that?" he asked. It wasn't something that had ever occurred to him. Then another question wormed its way out of his mouth before he could stop it. "Why?" |
"Our living arrangements while we're here." Robin pulled out his phone, texting Jeane. "And they are on their own."
"Why not?" Jeane challenged. "Khalid more than deserves it. It would be easier for her to do things without having to check with me." She shrugged. |
"And if I decide to stay near Jeane to keep an eye on her?" Khalid asked. It was a legitimate question, since she could very easily stay in her bottle. Then, if Robin wanted Khalid to have nice living arrangements, Jeane would have to have them, too. Never let it be said that she couldn't be a bit manipulative.
"What if it isn't possible?" Cal pointed out. He didn't add that Khalid seemed content with the way things were, for the moment. After a moment, though, he did have to ask something else. "Why now? It seems kind of sudden." |
Robin shrugged. "I can always tell her where we are," he pointed out. "Unless you want me to secure a room for her as well?" Because Robin wasn't a fool. He guessed that's what she wanted.
Jeane looked at him for a few moments before she sighed. "I don't know if it's possible or not, thus the research. And I'm doing it now because it just occured to me not long after we discovered she was pregnant." She shrugged. |
"I'm not going to lounge about in whatever penthouse you somehow find while Jeane has to find something else for herself," Khalid pointed out. "She gets taken care of before I do, that's how it's supposed to work." Robin was a smart puck, he knew what she was getting at. She glanced at Ishiah, to see if he had anything to add.
"Gah, don't remind me of that," Cal muttered. "Bad enough we all know what they've been up to, now..." He made a face. Ish was going to be absolutely insufferable, soon, and Cal was absolutely sure that it would start to affect the way the peri behaved at the bar. |
Robin shrugged. "Alright, I'll make sure she gets a good room to share with Cal." He smirked. "You two stay here. I'll be back in a jiffy." He got up and headed towards civilization to get rooms for both of them. And Niko too, probably.
Jeane snickered. "Don't worry so much," she said with a little grin. "We're on vacation, remember? Means you don't worry." |
"That was easier than I thought it would be," Khalid commented as Robin walked away. "Which means he might be plotting something."
Cal just rolled his eyes and kissed her. Then he took her book. "We're on vacation," he reminded her teasingly. "No research until we get back home." |
"Probably," Ishiah agreed easily. "A better question would be when is he not plotting something." He watched Robin go before he shook his head.
Jeane laughed quietly and let him take her book without a fuss. "If you insist," she said teasingly. |
Khalid dug her toes into the sand a little.
"Jeane is right, though, we all needed a vacation," she said. She looked at him. "You and Robin have been all wound up lately, and don't tell me you haven't." Cal set the book aside and pulled Jeane into his lap. If they were going to be on this vacation, he intended to make it enjoyable. |
Ish hummed quietly. "Perhaps," he admitted. "Perhaps we've been worried about you." Which was true, in his case. He'd taken to the idea of fatherhood very well.
Jeane laughed quietly and wrapped her arms around him. "Getting comfy now are we?" she teased. |
"I'm a big girl," Khalid replied tartly, "I can take care of myself." She still chafed at the thought of needing help at all, even though she knew she would later on. She was too used to being 'strong and independent.'
"Maybe," Cal teased back. He held her close and kissed her. "I don't hear you complaining." |
"There's a difference between worrying and attempting to take care of," Ishiah pointed out, his eyes narrowing at her just a little. Because that was true; though he'd worried, he had never once tried to tell her what to do.
"Don't have much to complain about at the moment." Jeane grinned and kissed him briefly, teasing. |
"It's a very fine line, Ishiah," Khalid replied. She saw his expression change slightly, and her lips narrowed a bit. "You don't have to worry about me or take care of me, I can do that just fine on my own."
"Good, I want to keep it that way," Cal said, returning her kiss. |
Ishiah huffed. "Fine. Then I'll worry about the little one." Because they both knew the child was technically half his. And he wasn't about to let that little bit of leverage go.
Jeane smiled and kissed him again, winding her fingers in his hair. "I could get used to this," she muttered. |
Khalid narrowed her eyes at him, knowing she'd been outmaneuvered for the moment. She turned away from him with a huff, crossing her arms over her chest.
Cal grinned a bit. "That's the plan," he replied teasingly. |
Ishiah stayed there, relaxing again slowly. He let out a breath and leaned back in the sand, getting comfortable there for the moment.
Jeane laughed quietly. "Good plan. I like that plan." She leaned forward to nose at his ear teasingly. |
After a few moments, when her annoyance at Ishiah didn't fade immediately, Khalid popped herself back to her bottle. Relaxing there for a little while would probably help.
"I thought you would," Cal replied, leaning back just slightly so he could kiss her properly. |
Ishiah sighed at that and waited for Robin to come back so he could figure out where they were staying. And send Robin to tell Khalid.
Jeane hummed, pleased, and kissed him again. At least until she noticed that Khalid went back into her bottle. She kept track of those things, and since she always had the bottle with her, she noticed. She blinked, wondering if she should try or just leave Khalid alone for the moment. |
Cal noticed when Jeane paused.
"Something wrong?" he asked. He hadn't noticed anything around them change, so there shouldn't have been anything that would have distracted her. |
"Khalid's back in her bottle," Jeane said quietly. After a moment she shook herself. If Khalid wanted to talk, she'd talk. Jeane figured it was probably best to try not to draw the djinn's ire.
Then her phone buzzed at her from her pocket. "Hold up a sec." She pulled out her phone, checking the note from Robin quickly. "I guess we should go get a key before Robin leaves them hanging somewhere or something..." |
