Khalid's immediate reaction was to say no, but she hesitated for a moment. She and Cal seemed to be getting in each other's way quite a bit lately.
"I'm not sure," she said at last. |
Robin nodded. "Okay. What have I been missing?" He looked at her, raising an eyebrow. He figured he needed to know in case things got ugly between the two.
"Personally, I don't know," Khalid replied. "I've been looking after Jeane the way I always have. That hasn't changed." But now all of a sudden Cal seemed to be taking offense to it and trying to look after Jeane himself, Khalid had noticed.
Robin was quiet for a few moments, looking at her. He could tell there was something else.
"But...?" he prompted finally, when she didn't say anything more. |
"But we've been tripping over each other lately," Khalid admitted. She wriggled a bit on the couch to try to get comfortable as the baby kicked a bit. "I've been looking after Jeane, it's my job. I'm supposed to be there at her beck and call, it's practically in the job description. But she's spending most of her time with Cal, now, and..." She sighed. "I don't know. Maybe we're clashing because we're both trying to take care of her."
She moved around on the couch again and nearly growled. "And I can't get the baby to settle down at all. Just as irritating as its sire sometimes, I swear." |
Robin laughed quietly at that and moved over, crouching next to her and starting to rub her stomach gently. "Don't yell at me," he said before she could. "This is supposed to help it settle down. Make you both more relaxed. Or something."
Khalid sighed softly as the baby finally quieted and settled down under Robin's hands.
"Well, it worked," she said as she relaxed a bit. She looked at him. "Since when do you know things like that?" |
Robin shrugged. "I've been around enough pregnant women. Former deity and all that." Hey, if it had worked five thousand years ago, he figured it would work now. Sometimes having an incredibly long life, even if he didn't remember half of it, was beneficial.
"Fair enough," Khalid said. She leaned back a little as he worked. "Feels good... I think the baby's all relaxed now too." And she was feeling better now that she wasn't being kicked anymore for the moment.
Robin hummed but didn't stop just yet. She looked like she was relaxing and enjoying herself. And who was he to take that away from her?
Plus he got to touch her more. |
Khalid ended up dozing off as Robin worked. It was relaxing, the couch was comfortable, and she could use all the sleep she could get. It was a potent combination.
Robin didn't try to move her, instead just covering her with a blanket and sprawling on the chair near her. He didn't have much else to do until Ish got back, anyway.
Khalid stirred a bit when he put the blanket over her, but only to snuggle into the couch a bit more comfortably. She'd stay there until Ish got back, at least.
Ish didn't get back until later than usual, since he had to make Cal clean up his mess. At least the human hadn't gotten hurt...
He paused when he saw Khalid and snuck over to her to check on her. Robin didn't comment. |
Khalid was sleeping quite comfortably on the couch, curled up on her side. She woke up a bit when Ishiah came over.
"Welcome back," she murmured. "Late night?" |
"I had to make sure Cal cleaned up his mess." Ishiah sighed and moved so he was sitting on the arm of the couch. "How do you feel?"
"What did he do?" Khalid asked, sitting up. It took more effort than she thought it would, and she ended up being half-curled up in the corner of the couch.
"Killed an idiot Wolf." Ishiah sighed. "The Wolf was being an idiot, but Cal snapped at him. I'd advise you either talk to Jeane or get her out of the city for a little while."
Khalid was quiet for a moment, and then nodded.
"I'll see what I can do," she said. "Though if she leaves the city for a while, I have to go with her, you know." |
Ish huffed. "Nevermind, then. Talk to her and get her to make up with Cal." Because he did not want her leaving the city. Not now.
Khalid understood exactly why one of the options suddenly vanished. Both puck and peri had been ridiculously attentive since she'd gotten pregnant, and neither of them were likely to let her follow Jeane away from the city.
"I'll see what I can do," she repeated. And she would. She'd do her best to convince Jeane to patch things up with Cal, but she wouldn't be able to force the historian to stay if she didn't want to. |
Ishiah nodded. "Are you comfortable there or shall we move to the bed?" He raised an eyebrow at her. He knew he didn't have to stay there, but he would if she did. He'd been more clingy than Robin.
"I think that's up to Robin," Khalid replied, glancing at the puck. "It is still his apartment." The other two had pretty much invaded Robin's apartment, lately, and she did realize it.
Robin rolled his eyes. "You don't have to ask," he said, rolling his shoulders briefly before he got up. "Bed's more comfortable. Move before I pick you up."
Khalid rolled her eyes at him, but got up from the couch (again with more effort than she thought). The baby kicked and rolled over, apparently woken up by the sudden motion, but settled in again quickly.
"Alright, I'm up," she said. |
