"Oh that sounds wonderful." Jeane grinned briefly and got up. "Let me just go get dressed and things." She gathered up some clothes and vanished into the bathroom.
It didn't take her long to emerge again, and then she texted Cal back. Because it's awesome. I'll show you when I get back. |
Khalid waited for Jeane to get ready, and then led the way back to the market, towards the flatbread stall.
It just sounds weird, Cal replied. He didn't argue with her, however. |
Jeane grinned and walked after Khalid, her mouth watering a little at the smells coming from the market. Okay, yeah, now she was hungry. Really really hungry.
I'm definitely bringing back new recipes, too. |
Khalid went straight for the vendor selling the filled flatbreads. While there were other vendors selling more modern kinds of food, they weren't as busy as the flatbread vendor. The menu tacked up on one corner of the stall was all in that old dialect of early Arabic, belying the age and, likely, race of the vendor.
"What do you want?" Khalid asked Jeane. She gestured to where a few flatbreads were on display, showing various cheeses and fruits and nuts. |
Jeane picked two. She was hungry and they all looked delicious. "Oh man it smells good here..." Now she was most definitely hungry. As if she hadn't been before.
|
Khalid nodded and placed their order in her native language. The vendor seemed surprised (he'd been more than willing to speak a more modern language once he'd heard them speaking English) and then grinned and started making the orders. It had been a while since another of his kind had come to his stall, in spite of its popularity, and the change was refreshing. Once the flatbreads were ready, he handed them over. Then his attention was captured by another customer.
"He's a djinn," Khalid murmured as she handed Jeane her breakfast. "An old one." |
"How many djinn are there?" Jeane asked, unable to curb her curiosity. She really couldn't help it, especially now that she knew Khalid. Four years ago she'd only ever heard of djinn in old myths, and now she knew one very well and had met two others.
|
"It's hard to tell," Khalid replied. "The number fluctuates every so often... And the concentration here is a little skewed." She shrugged. "Worldwide? A hundred or so, maybe two. More than the pucks, at any rate."
|
"Okay. So not as many as lots of other things, but more than pucks." Jeane nodded and started eating. And promptly almost melted. "Oh gods this is good..."
|
Khalid grinned at Jeane's reaction and bit into her own breakfast.
"Better than most breakfast sweets," she commented. "And better for you." |
"No kidding. Oh man I have got to learn how to make these. This is so good..." Jeane was practically in bliss as she ate.
|
"Flatbread, soft goat cheese, I think, dates, and chopped nuts," Khalid said as she briefly peeled hers open to see the filling. Then she closed it again and took another bite and sighed. "It's been a long time since I've had this."
|
"I could have this every morning. Except that, you know, it takes a couple hours to make the bread." Jeane grinned. Even she didn't want this for breakfast that much.
Lunch, though, was another story. |
Khalid shrugged. It was possible to buy flatbread, that wasn't a problem. But she knew Jeane had this thing about making food from scratch.
"When you're done, we can go wander about for a while," she said. |
Jeane took her time enjoying her food, just relaxing as she stayed there. She was perfectly happy.
After she finished, she stretched briefly before she started to walk, not heading anywhere in particular. |
Khalid would readily admit that she enjoyed the time in Arabia. She enjoyed it very much, since it was comforting and familiar to her. But she would also (albeit possibly under duress) admit that it was nice to go back to the city again. The trip 'home' was as short as the trip in; just a wish and they were back.
|
Jeane brought stuff back with her. Because it was impossible for her to not go shopping. She grinned at Khalid as she set her bags down on the couch.
"If you want to go see Robin and Ish, feel free. You don't have to stick around on my account." |
"You sure you don't need help finding space for all of that?" Khalid asked, gesturing to the bags. She'd done a little shopping herself, although it was mainly to bring something back for her puck and her peri.
|
"Nah, I'm good. All the pillows are going straight into a pillow nest." Jeane grinned. "And everything else will be dealt with later."
|
Khalid rolled her eyes slightly, but nodded.
"Alright, then," she said. Then she popped herself to Robin's apartment. |
Robin looked up when he heard the telltale pop and grinned broadly, grabbing Ish and going to go greet Khalid.
"How was your trip?" he asked, walking over to her and hugging her tightly. Ish waited his turn. Jeane grinned and texted Cal. Honey, I'm home. |
Cal didn't immediately reply. He and Niko had been contacted about a job, and the promised pay was good, so they were off taking care of that at the moment. As soon as he had a spare chance to breathe without the threat of that ability being taken from him, he sent a reply back.
On a job. Should be back by tonight. Khalid returned the hug, and then hugged Ishiah. It was slightly easier to do so than it had been before she left; she was carrying the baby a little lower, now. It made it a bit easier for her to breathe, but according to her research also meant the baby could come at any time. "The trip was good," she replied. "It was nice to go back to the homeland for a bit. How was everything here?" |
Jeane nodded and didn't text back, figuring it was better not to distract him anymore, and went to go set up her pillow nest and put some things away. She figured she had the time, after all.
"Normal. Boring." Robin rolled his eyes. Ishiah sighed. "He's been a pest," he said, nodding to Robin. "And Cal has been... difficult." He looked at her. "Now. Will you explain why Robin's been hoarding every feather of mine he's been able to find?" |
"Because I told him to," Khalid replied as she set down her bag and settled herself on the couch. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out the carefully-wrapped bottle. "I asked him to find one that would go with this." Gently, she unwrapped the new bottle to show them. "Lucky for me, this was finished just before we got there, so I was able to pick it up."
|
Ishiah blinked as he looked at it. "Is that...?" he asked quietly, looking down at her belly and then back at the bottle. He didn't necessarily like the idea of any child of his being a djinn, but maybe it wouldn't be so bad if Jeane was successful.
