"Nik wanted to pick your brain, actually," Cal replied. He was fairly sure it was physically painful for Niko not to know something, and he intended to tease his brother about it later, when the immediate-danger-factor was lower.
Jeane blinked at that and sat up. "Okay, what about? what's going on?" She couldn't go get a book until she knew what they needed to know. Fortunately for them, she still had the library on monsters.
Cal opened his mouth to try to explain and then stopped.
"You'd be better off with Nik telling you," he said. Pulling the phone away from his ear, he switched it to speaker mode so that both of them could hear and talk to Jeane. |
"We believe we just met Kali."
"Oh, shit." That got her up and moving towards the correct book. "Let's see... Indian goddess of death and destruction, usually implacable, not very nice..." Jeane frowned. "But that's all normal info. What more do you need?" "Relations, potential victims and lairs, and anything useful for us to get rid of her." Niko moved closer to Cal so Jeane could hear more clearly. "Got it. Might take some time to get that. I know she's very proud, and she tends to kill anyone who insults her, whether it's an imagined slight or not." Jeane paused. "Please tell me you didn't do anything to piss her off." |
"You know me," Cal replied, ignoring the Look from his brother. Hey, he hadn't even realized he'd 'insulted' Kali at the time, which was pretty much par for the course. He usually insulted people on purpose, that's all.
Jeane groaned. "Yes, I do, and that means you're screwed. Just try not to do anything too horrible until I can get some more information and try to figure out how you can gank her."
"The sooner the better," Cal replied. He was pretty sure he and Niko could keep out of Kali's reach until Jeane could get them more information, but they wouldn't be able to hold out forever.
"I'll work on it." Jeane hesitated for a moment. She didn't want to be clingy, but she did want to let Cal know she missed him. Except he might protest that in front of his brother. So she settled with, "Call me whenever you have time." Since she could multitask.
"I will," Cal promised. He wasn't as stupid as he acted sometimes; he knew Jeane was telling him that she missed him, without being outright sappy. And he appreciated the gesture. "Let us know what you find."
"Will do. Stay safe, both of you." Jeane hung up and started pulling out whatever books she thought might be helpful while dialing Khalid's number at the same time. She was going to need a little extra help with this.
Khalid was lucky enough to be near her phone at the time. It was her turn to look after Alexander, and she was in the middle of feeding him.
"Hey, Jeane," she greeted. "Do you need something?" Always a legitimate question, with her. It was always a possibility that Jeane might ask for something. |
"Sort of. I need some information." Jeane leaned back in her chair. "Apparently the guys ran into Kali while they were off hunting banshees."
"Kali?" Khalid repeated, running the name in her head. She only knew of one being with that name, and she groaned slightly. "Somehow, I'm not surprised, given the track records around here. Did they say what was going on?"
"Cal pissed her off. Of course." Jeane sighed. "They want to know anything helpful. How to appease her might be a good start. Preferably without putting my boyfriend's head on a silver platter."
"I don't know of any real way to appease her," Khalid replied after a moment of thought. "Everything I've heard before suggests that she only calms down for a while after a rampage. Razing cities to the ground and leveling forests and such. Although, people used to offer sacrifices at her altars." She didn't specify what kind of sacrifices. Switching the phone to speaker, she cuddled Alexander close as he fell asleep in her arms. "Maybe a sufficient sacrifice might cool her temper a bit."
"Alright. Any suggestions on the type of sacrifice? Herd of bulls, half the people in Manhattan, what?" Jeane started flipping through one of her books as she talked, looking for any connections Kali might have to other gods.
"Anything substantial," Khalid replied. "The herd of bulls might do it, but a single animal would just be insulting. Kali has a superiority complex, and the single-life sacrifices made to 'lesser' deities would only offend her." She knew that much, at least.
"Okay. Well, I can probably get some help from some people at work and round up a big enough sacrifice. Hopefully." Jeane paused momentarily. "What do we do if that doesn't work?"
"Let her take out her anger some other way," Khalid replied. That was the best information she could give. "She isn't one of those passive, easily appeased gods. She represented death and destruction to her people for a reason."
"That's what I thought." Jeane sighed. "Thanks, Khalid. I'll let you know how it goes." And now she had several calls to make. Oh she was going to throttle Cal, just a little, when he got back.
"Let me know if you need any more of my help," Khalid replied. She had done what she could, for the moment, but she would find a way to help Jeane more if the woman asked.
"I will. I think I'm good for the moment, though. Thanks." Jeane hung up and just sat there for a few moments before she started making the necessary calls. This was going to be a long, long night.
Khalid kept her phone handy, just in case Jeane called again. It sounded like something big was happening, and she wanted to make sure Jeane was taken care of. And if that meant being on standby in case Jeane or the Leandros brothers needed something, then that's what she would do. She owed the brothers favors, anyways.
Jeane managed to get a dozen bulls in the space of two hours. Shipping them would be a little difficult, but she managed to pull a few strings.
Now she just had to find out where to send them. So she called Cal again. |
Cal had kept his phone close, and answered quickly.
"Anything new?" he asked. "Nik hasn't come up with anything yet." Which was irritating his brother, since Niko was used to knowing what he needed. Nik hated not having all the information. |
