"None yet. I found them, and one person is willing to just give it tome because he's sick of having it around. The other might require some bribery." Jeane shrugged. Hey, she figured she was kind of on a roll.
"Well, you'll need them both," Khalid replied. "It won't work without them." She figured, since Jeane was going to the trouble of finding the chalices, she was willing to go through with the process.
"I know. I just need to figure out how to get the other one. What to bribe her with." Jeane shrugged. "I'll think of something. But I should have those in a couple days. What else do we need?"
"A fresh mermaid's tear," Khalid replied, thinking back. "Something about the water from the spring mixing with the tear in those particular chalices is supposed to start the process."
"Okay." Jeane looked slightly unnerved by that. "Any idea where we can find mermaids?" And at that she paused. "I can't believe mermaids exist. They're going to have claws and three-inch fangs and be trying to tear people to pieces, huh?"
"They tried to drown you in the Bahamas, Jeane," Khalid reminded. "When you found the comb, remember?"
"Right. But I didn't actually see them then." Jeane shivered briefly. She'd forgotten about that, and she was kind of glad she had.
"Okay. So I think I'm just going to sit on the shore and be the cheering squad for whoever tries to get the tear." |
"We'll figure something out," Khalid replied. Even if she had to drag the mermaid out of the water by magic, they would get what they needed.
Jeane nodded. "Okay. So we'll have the two chalices, and we'll figure something out with the mermaid. What about the Fountain itself? Where is that and how do we get to it?"
"That's easier," Khalid replied, a little uncomfortably. "I know someone who's been there."
Jeane blinked but nodded. "Okay. Well, I guess whenever is good we can start this."
"Are you sure this is what you want, Jeane?" Khalid asked. "You don't have to live forever, you know."
"I know. Trust me, I spent enough time asking myself that question. Cal's actually probably annoyed at me because I haven't slept much." Jeane shrugged. She'd needed to be sure before she started this, and she was sure.
"Alright," Khalid said softly. "Robin told me he knows of an appropriate... donor." Because that was the real last piece... the one giving Jeane the extra years.
Jeane smiled humorlessly at her choice of wording. "Alright. I take it it won't be someone who would be missed." Because that was one thing she wanted to be sure of.
"He made sure," Khalid replied. Because they all knew that had to be a requirement. Jeane insisted.
Jeane nodded. That was comforting, as much as it could be. "Okay. When should we get going then?"
"Give me a day or two to make arrangements," Khalid said, "and then we'll go." That way, she could make sure Ishiah would be okay looking after Alexander, and she could figure out the route to the Fountain.
Jeane nodded. "Us two or is Robin coming as well?" Plus she wanted to know if she could ask Cal to come along too.
"Robin as well," Khalid replied. Robin was the one bringing the sacrifice, after all.
Jeane nodded. "Alright. I'll let Cal know when we're going." And then she'd see if he wanted to go with or not. Because as stubborn as he was, he might not give them the option of yes or no.
Khalid nodded. She knew Jeane would want Cal around for it, so she didn't argue the point. Besides, it was time to make arrangements.
Jeane took her time heading back home, figuring that Cal would either already be there or be on his way back. She still wasn't sure if he'd approve of her decision or not. Not that she needed his approval, but life tended to be easier when he wasn't getting pissy and Auphe.
Cal was there, in fact. He'd gotten back not long before she had, and was already lounging on the couch for the moment.
"Hey." Jeane smiled a little at him, hanging up her bag and jacket and toeing her shoes off. "You're early for once."
