"Had to happen sometime," Cal replied from the couch. More likely, Niko had pushed him out of their apartment with the end of his sword and told him that if he valued his ability to please Jeane, he would get the hell out and be on time.
Jeane snorted and moved over to him, leaning down to kiss him briefly.
"So I talked to Khalid and got a few things done." |
"What did she say?" Cal asked, returning the kiss. He still wasn't entirely sure about what Jeane was going to do, but it was what she wanted. So he'd stay out of the way.
"That we can leave in a few days, once she's got everything settled. Robin apparently found someone no one will miss, and there are a few other things we have to get along the way." Jeane shrugged, sitting down in front of him.
"Other things?" Cal asked. He didn't know any of the specifics, just the general overview of the plan.
"Well I have to get two chalices. One of them I'm getting tomorrow, and the other I'll hopefully get tomorrow night. And then apparently we need to get a mermaid tear and then get to the Fountain." Jeane shrugged. That was what she'd gotten out of the conversation, anyway.
Cal raised an eyebrow.
"Interesting," he said doubtfully. "And this is supposed to work?" |
"Somehow. Robin says he knows someone who did it, so I guess it works." Jeane shrugged again. "Besides, I trust Khalid's judgment. If she says it'll work, it'll work."
Cal was still doubtful, but he didn't say anything else. Robin was rarely wrong about such things, so it was a pretty safe bet to believe him on the subject.
"So do you want to stay here?" Jeane looked at him, blinking once. He'd never actually said he wanted to go, so she wasn't sure what he was doing.
"Do you want me to?" Cal asked in return. He hadn't been sure if she wanted him to go.
"If you want to come, yes. I'd like it if you came." Jeane smiled a little. Sometimes it was best to just say it so he couldn't claim he misunderstood later on.
"Then I will," Cal replied. Besides, that way he could make sure nothing happened to her that wasn't supposed to.
Jeane nodded and cuddled closer to him, content there for the moment. She could call the person with the other chalice and negotiate with him later. That would wait.
Cal held her close the way she wanted, pulling her into his lap so she was on top of him. Life was pretty good at the moment.
Jeane grinned briefly at that but didn't even try to move just yet. At least certain things were most definitely going her way.
It took Khalid a few days to set everything in order, but she managed to figure out all the logistics and locations for Jeane. She was surprised, though, at how hard it was to leave her son with someone else for the time it would take, even though she knew the boy would be safe with his father. She wanted to bring Alexander with her, but she knew it was too dangerous to take the child along, and so reluctantly left him with Ishiah with instructions to contact her if they needed anything. Because yes, she would be an overbearing mother if she had to.
Ish knew she was upset with having to leave Alexander behind and so decided to send her messages to keep her up to date. Harder for her to worry that way, if he was constantly in contact. At least, that's what he figured.
Jeane was ready to go when Khalid told her to be, albeit still nervous. She wasn't sure how things were going to work out, and she wasn't used to purposefully striding towards danger, as opposed to her normal run and hide until it's all blown over. |
Khalid appreciated the updates more than she let on. They set her a bit more at ease, and she was able to focus on Jeane.
"Robin will meet us there," she said to Jeane and Cal. "Easier that way than lugging the extra baggage with us the whole way." |
Jeane nodded. "Okay. So where are we going?" She was still a little nervous and fidgety, but she was hiding it well.
"South America," Khalid replied. She was reluctant to give them the actual location, still. "I know where we're going. I'm asking you to trust me for a bit."
"Okay," Jeane agreed. South America? Geeze. That would be a long trip, normally. Hopefully there weren't any giant spiders. "Well, ready as I'll ever be."
Khalid nodded and glanced at Cal, who also nodded after a moment.
"Brace yourselves," she said. Then she popped them to South America, as close to the fountain as she could. They were still a significant distance away, since the magic of the fountain negated all else for a huge radius, but they were on the right continent at least. |
Jeane grimaced at the sudden climate change. It was hot and sticky and just not pleasant. "Which way now?" she asked, looking over at Khalid.
"This way," Khalid said, heading through the brush. "Caliban, keep your eyes open. Jaguars aren't the worst things to worry about out here."
