"Okay." Jeane looked at him. "I suggest you get used to the idea, then. Because I do want a child, although I'll adopt one if that's what you prefer." She raised her eyebrows at him.
Cal was quiet for a minute.
"Give me a few more days to think?" he asked finally. He wasn't outright saying 'no.' |
Jeane nodded. "Of course. Like I said before, this isn't going to happen right away. Just now I can plan accordingly."
"Alright," Cal said. He shifted over closer to her and slid an arm around her waist. "Now, since when can you read whatever-that-was?" He nodded to the old book. "Did you just wish for it or what? Does it even work that way?"
"No," Jeane said slowly. "It can work that way, I suppose, but it didn't for me." She shifted a little, uncomfortable. "I just sort of it know it now." Because clearly he was going to have to drag the details out of her.
"Just sort of know it how?" Cal pressed. Because yes, he did want to know.
Jeane shifted again. "Sort of a side effect of the Fountain," she mumbled. Because she couldn't quite lie to him, but she didn't want to tell him either. She wasn't sure how he'd react.
Cal blinked.
"A side effect of the Fountain?" he repeated. He paused. "Wait, so, what, you know what the other puck knew or something? Is that supposed to happen?" |
"I'm gaining his knowledge slowly," Jeane admitted. "And Robin said it's happened before. He didn't expect it to happen, but it had happened before." Which really only made her feel marginally better.
At least someone knew what was happening, that was something. Cal relaxed fractionally.
"So now you suddenly speak other languages?" he asked. "What else?" |
"I don't know yet. It's hard to tell." Jeane sighed. "I didn't even know until earlier when Khalid sang a lullaby in her original language and I understood it. I don't know what else I'll get from the puck, and I can't exactly sit there and analyze it because even though I know I couldn't read this yesterday, it feels as natural as if I've been speaking the language for years."
"That's kinda creepy," Cal said. "Useful as hell," he added hastily, "and kinda cool, but creepy." He pulled her closer. "Are you gonna be okay?"
"Yeah, I think so. It'll just take some getting used to." Jeane smiled, though it wasn't quite normal. Creepy was fairly accurate, actually. As for useful, she wasn't sure.
"Alright," Cal replied. He was quiet for a minute. "So... what exactly were you reading?"
"Old diary." Jeane smiled a little as she pulled the book over again. "This guy was a merchant, and apparently he traveled some as well."
"Is it interesting?" Cal asked, looking over her shoulder. He promptly lost interest when he realized that not only was it not in English and totally lacked pictures, but the words were all just funky little scribbles.
"Sort of. It's interesting because I don't know much about the period, but even in English it's sort of odd wording." Jeane shrugged. "He did draw a map, though."
"Oh, a map," Cal said half-heartedly, though he grinned a bit at her to show he was teasing. "How much did you have to bribe your boss to get her to let you take the book home?"
"Another old Viking ring," Jeane said carelessly, as if they were as common as pennies. "Although I had to convince her it really wasn't necessary to give me another raise so soon."
Cal snorted.
"You'll be paid more than she is soon," he said. |
"Ah, I doubt that." Jeane rolled her eyes at him. "But I doubt I'll ever have to work anywhere else if I retire in another ten years or so. Although I don't know, I guess that depends how long I actually live now."
"Pucks are as close to immortal as it's possible to get," Cal rattled off, sounding a bit bored as he did so. "According to Nik, at least, from what he was able to sift out of Robin's bullshit."
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean it all transferred to me. And besides, who knows what'll happen in the future?" Jeane shrugged.
"You almost sound like you've actually been using that idiot's book of monsters I made for you a while back." |
"It's useful," Cal admitted grudgingly. "And don't ever tell Nik I read it."
Jeane laughed. "Don't worry, your secret is safe with me," she teased before she kissed him.
