"Yeah, mostly. I'm dealing with it pretty well, I think." Jeane was quiet for a moment. "I've been making a list of everything I know now that I didn't know before. And last night I kept having nightmares about the Trojan War. I guess the puck was involved somehow because I know things about it that I shouldn't know. Not memories, but facts and things that would be impossible to know now, even with research."
"He likely was, then," Khalid replied. "Ask Robin, maybe he knows about it. It will be alright, Jeane, don't worry about it too much."
"I'm trying not to." Jeane sighed. "But this is a lot to absorb in the past couple years, you have to admit."
"I know," Khalid said. She sighed slightly. "I didn't mean to drag you into all of this. Until everything happened, I was planning on letting your ownership run its course like all the rest." She gave a wry little grin. "Of course, everything happened."
"It's okay. I don't mind." Jeane smiled. "Otherwise I never would have met Cal, and you wouldn't have Robin and Ish and Alexander. So it all worked out."
"Ish doesn't think the family is quite complete yet," Khalid said dryly. "He wants a daughter too, apparently."
Jeane snorted. "Somehow I'm not surprised." She grinned and shook her head. "Most guys discover that once they have a kid they want a little girl to spoil."
"Robin is egging him on too, I think," Khalid said. She shook her head. "They both want a little girl to spoil."
Jeane grinned. "Well, wait a few years. Torture them a little. It'll be interesting to see how soon they try to convince you it's time for another one."
"Seriously," Khalid replied. "It'll be interesting to see how they try to convince me, as well, not just how soon."
Jeane snickered. "Oh that will be entertaining," she said with a big grin. "And you can use that as blackmail, too. Threaten them with no more kids."
Khalid snorted a bit.
"I could," she agreed. Her expression softened just a bit. "But I doubt I will. Having a family means a lot to them both." |
"This is true." Jeane was quiet as their food arrived, waiting until she was mixing in some chicken with the rice to speak again.
"Cal said he needs a few days to think things over again." |
"Thinking things over is not a bad thing," Khalid said as she mixed a bit of curry into her own rice and chicken. "He isn't refusing you outright."
"Yup. It's progress." Jeane smiled a little. "I don't think he'll ever be truly comfortable with the idea, though. But who knows, I might get lucky and he'll decide to try."
"Be patient," Khalid said. "I'm sure he'll come around some, and it isn't like you're on a time limit."
"I know." Jeane smiled. "It's kind of nice, knowing that." She was quiet for a few minutes while she ate.
"Feel a little better now?" Khalid asked after they ate.
"Yeah." Jeane smiled sheepishly. "I guess I need to go out and do things more often." She stretched briefly before paying for their food.
"Nothing wrong with that," Khalid replied. "If you're interested, Robin gave me a first-edition copy of Arabian Nights. I'm sure it will keep you busy for a while."
"We'll see. At the moment I'm going through things at the museum, translating all the things that have been sitting there for years." Jeane grinned briefly. "I think Sangrida loves me now."
"Very rarely does anyone come across someone like you, Jeane," Khalid pointed out. "Talent, skills, and the proper understanding to use both effectively. I'm not surprised she appreciates having you around."
Jeane smiled, pleased, and nodded. "Yeah. Plus I actually do my work. And then some." Which she didn't mind. It was fun to bring things home. Except when Cal got pissy, but she was getting better at avoiding that.
"You always did," Khalid replied. "I remember." She stretched a bit and grinned. "So, think we left the men alone with the baby long enough?"
"Probably." Jeane grinned. "You should probably go check on them." She glanced at her phone. "Although I still have a few hours to kill before Cal gets off work."
