"There are different parts of Faerie," Bob said, rolling his eyes. "There are parts that are more normal."
Even so, Osanna said, somehow managing to grumble. I don't need any more man-eating plants. I've got a couple already. "Too bad. It would have been interesting to see if you could hande it." |
"Interesting for you, maybe," Naomi said. Hey, he didn't have to live with Osanna. The man-eating plants she already had were quite enough, thank you. "I think one of my sisters managed to breed a kind of rose that blossoms translucent flowers," she added. "I have no idea how, and they're probably not meant to survive in warm weather, but I saw them once. It was kind of neat."
|
Bob hummed. "I'm not surprised. There are some things I could show you in Faerie that you won't forget."
"Bob," Harry said, a warning clear in his voice. Bob sighed and gave up. "Fine, fine," he grumbled. "Anything else either of you can do?" Osanna looked over at Naomi. She makes the best snow forts. |
Naomi grinned.
"I love myself a good snow fort," she said. "I was off at school this one time and I built the best snow fort outside. None of the other students really appreciated it, of course, but they didn't really like half-breeds, either, so I didn't care." |
"How big?" Bob pressed. He was still trying to get a good idea of what the two of them could do, and how much. He did love information, after all.
|
"Since I had snow to work with, it was kind of impressive," Naomi replied. "You know, ready-made materials and all that. The one I made at school was maybe fifteen feet high, the outer wall was maybe a foot thick, and it had two levels with maybe four rooms each, with windows to the outside to pelt people with snowballs." She grinned. "All packed in solid and strong enough for people to walk on."
|
Bob whistled softly. "Wow. Your snow fort was better than this place is."
"Bob..." Herry growled. Bob just somehow radiated smug satisfaction at having gotten to Harry. Again. |
"I had really good snow to work with that day," Naomi replied. "Good packing snow, not that dry powdery shit that usually falls. And I had nothing to do that day, so I made the most of my free time." She grinned. "I nailed Andromeda with a snowball, I'll never forget that moment." Her older half-sister Andromeda had a particularly bad habit of picking on her, so the one moment of revenge was a sweet one.
|
Bob just listened, looking at her carefully. "Seems like you don't do half-bad for yourself," he said after a few moments. "Power-wise at least."
|
"Back home, we rank power levels from Zero to Six. I rank a low Three," Naomi said. "I'm good with that. My father ranks a mid-Five, my half-sisters each rank a mid-Four, and my half-brother ranks a lower Five." Just to give a little perspective. She didn't mind being weaker than the rest of her 'family,' it would be strange if she wasn't. "My mother is human, so she automatically ranks Zero."
|
"So humans are Zero, and the most powerful are Six." Bob hummed quietly for a few moments, thinking over the possibilities of what others could do, since she was only a Three. "Intriguing."
|
"That's pretty much it, yeah," Naomi agreed. "Not a difficult system." In the back of her mind, she'd already pinned Harry for somewhere around a Four or so, although his energy was different from anything else she was familiar with.
|
Bob looked over at Harry. "Let's see, then you would be, what? High Three? Maybe Four?"
Harry didn't let Bob's teasing get to him. Much. "I am going to dump you in Faerie and leave you there," he growled. "You wouldn't!" But Bob sounded meeker now. |
"Probably on the higher Four end, actually," Naomi said. "At least, from what I can tell." She looked at Harry. "It's weird, though, whatever it is you use makes me think of firecrackers. Kind of crackly and fizzy and more than a little explosive."
|
"That's... probably pretty accurate," Harry admitted. "I don't do subtle."
|
"You don't strike me as subtle," Naomi replied. She wasn't bad with subtle, and she wasn't bad with overt things, either. Subtle was making marbles. Overt was making a fortress out of snow.
|
"No. I don't do shields and illusions and things. I blow things up. It's more satisfying." And it was generally more helpful, for him at least.
|
Naomi grinned. Somehow, that didn't surprise her.
"I can't blow things up," she admitted. "My skills aren't right for it." |
Harry nodded. "You can freeze things, and I can blow them up. And if they're plants, Osanna can revive them." He shook his head.
|
"More like Osa can control them, if she tries," Naomi said. "She's good at things like that." She glanced at her friend and grinned. Like that thing in the office in Amestris, she added.
|
Osanna grinned. That was fun. Hard as heck, though. These plants here are easier to play with, when they're not dead.
Bob interpreted that and started laughing. Sometimes he loved Harry and his weird visitors. Osanna just rolled her eyes at the skull and got up, moving into the kitchen to get a drink of water. Mouse followed her, hopeful he might get some food. |
Naomi snorted. She knew how much Osanna liked to play with her plants.
"She's good at things like that," she added. "I make it a point not to go into her house all that often... I either kill things, or get nibbled on by things, and either way, it's not all that fun for me." |
Bob snickered. "Well, that sounds delightful. Built in security system."
Osanna nodded, moving back over to them with a cup of water. It works. I remember one plant that tried to nibble on Naomi and she froze it, and it shook off the frost and tried to nip her again. That was fun. |
Naomi snorted a bit.
"Fun for you, maybe," she said. "I don't know what that thing was, but if it tries to bite me again when we get home, it's going straight under my shoes." She wasn't going to play around with THAT particular plant again. Reaching over, she touched the outside of the glass and formed a thin, fragile layer of ice right on the surface of the water. She grinned at her friend, knowing that Osanna would know she was playing. |
Osanna just grinned and shook her head, poking at her glass of water. Then she shrugged and swirled it around enough to break up the ice before she took a swig.
"So you have your own houses?" Harry asked, looking at the two. |
