Cal shrugged. He didn't care much.
Naomi rolled her eyes back at her friend. She pretty much knew what Osa was thinking. She was about to tease her friend back when her youki pulsed and her heart gave a funky, albeit familiar, twist, and she immediately glanced out the window. She hadn't realized what night it was... She glanced at Osanna, knowing her friend knew what was going on. "Damn it, I lost track," she said, pulling the blue streak in her hair forward. She watched as the blue quickly faded out completely, leaving just brown in its place. Her shoulders drooped as she felt the last of her youki fade. "Damn." |
Osanna grinned briefly. Ha ha. Sucker. She never had to go through that since she was only a quarter. But it was always interesting on those nights when Naomi couldn't do anything.
Niko's eyebrows shot up when he noticed the blue fading to leave just brown. Curious. He glanced at Cal to see if his brother had noticed anything else. |
"Shut up," Naomi grumbled, glaring half-heartedly. She didn't even bother signing it to Osanna.
Cal HAD noticed what had happened, in fact. He wasn't sure what it was, but he'd definitely felt...something just before the change in Naomi. It felt kind of like pressure swelled against him for a moment before dying away completely, leaving a lack of 'pressure' that he hadn't even noticed was there before. Weird shit. |
Osanna grinned and patted her head, clearly having fun. It wasn't often she had the upper hand, after all.
Niko looked briefly amused, since he could read Cal like a book and he could tell what was going on with the two girls. Life was amusing sometimes. |
Naomi reached over and gave Osanna a bit of a shove.
"Stop, you," she said. She glanced at the brothers, knowing they at least noticed something was going on. |
Osanna grinned but didn't say anything else, instead just leaning back against the couch to relax and keep an eye on everyone. Just in case.
|
"So... what just happened, exactly?" Cal finally asked. Unlike his brother, he wasn't born knowing everything.
"I lost track of what day it was," Naomi said. "I forgot that I turn completely human tonight." Cal blinked. What? |
Because she's half, Osanna signed, still grinning. It doesn't effect me because I'm only a quarter. Only halfies change like that.
"I see," Niko murmured, looking at the two for a moment before nodding once to show he understood. Which he did. Unlike his little brother. |
"So, what, you just... randomly turn human?" Cal asked, raising an eyebrow. That was really weird, he'd never heard of anything like it before.
"It's not random," Naomi replied. "It's very regular. And like Osanna said, she doesn't have to deal with it because she's mostly human anyways. She doesn't fluctuate like me." |
Only halflings have to deal with the fluctuations. If you're three-quarters or one-quarter, you don't have a problem. It's only when there's equal part human and demon do you have problems.
Niko blinked. That was rather well phrased, and it made sense. So he nodded, rather impressed. |
Cal didn't understand the sign language, but it didn't matter for what he asked next.
"...How do you just forget something like that?" "To be fair, I shouldn't have," Naomi admitted. "I knew it was close, I just didn't realize it was this close." She'd only been dealing with it once a month all her life, so it was usually a no-brainer to keep track, but everything had been so crazy the last week or two that it had slipped her mind. |
We've been jumping worlds. It's been a little hard to think about normal things when we're never in one place for more than two or three days. Osanna gave Cal a look.
|
Cal looked at Osanna blankly, and Naomi sighed. Of course he didn't understand her. She translated the sign language for him, and he still gave her a rather blank look. There wasn't anything he could say to that that wouldn't get him swatted on the back of the head, and he knew it.
"How do you forget something like that?" he asked again. |
Osanna saved Niko the trouble and kicked Cal. Not hard, granted, but she still got his shin. And she gave him a very disapproving look. Niko had trouble not looking amused.
|
"Thank you, Osa," Naomi said evenly.
"What was that for?" Cal asked. It didn't hurt, really, but (to his mind) it was still uncalled-for. "For asking the same stupid question twice," Naomi replied. She paused for a moment, and then added, "And while we're on the subject of halflings..." She looked between the two brothers. That sobered up Cal's smartass mood real quick. |
Osanna quirked an eyebrow at the two, clearly questioning. She could tell, obviously, but she couldn't tell what he was. Obviously not half demon, like Naomi, but half something.
Niko stayed quiet, letting it be Cal's decision. After all, they were talking about Cal, not himself. |
Cal didn't say anything, just glancing over at Niko. He still didn't like talking about it at all. Naomi looked between the two and held up her hands.
"Right, touchy subject, moving on," she said. Seemed like that was something universal; there were always going to be half-bloods touchy about their heritage. |
Osanna snorted silently and rolled her eyes, instead amusing herself by plucking out a seed she'd stored in her hair, starting to make it grow slowly.
Niko watched, rather fascinated, as it bloomed into a little bud, and then into a little white flower rather like a water lily, only without the stem. Seeing Niko's fascination, Osanna grinned briefly and got up, trotting over to him and depositing the flower on his lap before retreating to go cuddle Naomi a bit. Niko looked rather stunned, in a very subtle way. |
Cal couldn't help it, he started snickering at the stunned look on his brother's face. It wasn't every day someone managed to surprise the superninja.
"Showoff," Naomi muttered to Osanna even as she cuddled back. "What was that, anyways?" |
Lily from home. Those ones I grow on the side of the house. Osanna grinned, clearly unrepentant. Hey, it was worth it.
Niko took the flower after a few moments, going through his own knowledge of plants, and came up blank. And then he looked at her again. Oh, now it was a challenge. |
"Oh that's not fair," Naomi said, although she couldn't help but grin. "That's one of your special breeds."
Cal couldn't help but snicker at that. Now they were just teasing Niko, although he doubted they knew that he wouldn't be able to recognize the flower, and wouldn't be able to stand not knowing. |
I know. Osanna grinned, rather evilly, and settled in to watch for a little while. It had entertainment potential, at least.
Niko turned the thing over, examining it very closely and coming up with the closest match he could find in his head before trying to figure out exactly what it was. He'd noticed Naomi had said something about a special breed, so something not native to this world, maybe? Which still wasn't an excuse for not knowing. |
Naomi grinned and watched as well.
"Remember what we told you about Osa's abilities," she said, giving Niko a bit of a hint. "Plants like her." |
"Meaning it's one of hers that doesn't exist here." Niko set the plant down gently on his leg. Curious indeed.
Osa grinned. He's smart. |
Naomi nodded, agreeing with both Niko and Osanna.
"Right," she said to Niko. "It's one of her special breeds that she likes to keep with her. I'm sure she has six or seven more somewhere." Cal blinked. "How does that work?" he asked, this time genuinely curious. "She keeps the seeds with her," Naomi replied. She would have let Osanna reply, but Naomi would have had to translate anyways, so this was faster. |
