"Oh." Yusuke made a face. "That's... kinda weird, actually. Sorry." He looked at them for a few moments. "Wait a sec. How come you do but she doesn't?" He pointed at Osanna.
"Osa's a legacy, not a hanyou," Naomi replied. "She's a quarter, so she's more human than not. Only actual half-and-halfs like me fluctuate." She grumbled something under her breath about it being distinctly unfair.
Yusuke snorted. "Well, that really doesn't sound like fun," he said before sitting across from the two. "How long does this last?"
"Till sunrise," Naomi replied. "Back home, I huddle up under my electric blanket and watch movies all night. It's not worth turning the house heat up for just a few hours." And, although she wouldn't admit it, she didn't like sleeping on these nights. Even though she knew she would be okay, she just didn't quite feel safe. "And it'll be one night a month all my life."
Yusuke winced sympathetically. "Wow. That sucks. At least you're here and not, like, stuck at Kuwabara's house or something."
"There are much worse places to be," Naomi agreed. Her father's residence was one of those places, and she'd been stuck there on her human night before. It was not a pleasant experience. She'd locked herself in her room, that time, and didn't come out until well after sunrise. She didn't even relax that night, let alone sleep.
"Well, at least you're comfortable." Yusuke shrugged. He wasn't really good with pleasantries most of the time. "You need anything?"
"I'm fine for right now," Naomi replied, waving a hand. Or rather, waving her fingers, since the sleeve of her jacket was pulled up over most of her hand. "But thanks." She held up her tea. "I swear caffeine was made for nights like these."
Yusuke snickered. "Tea isn't really my thing, but soda and coffee work just as well," he said with a grin. "And video games."
"I didn't think to bring those," Naomi admitted. "I should have." Because, as any teenager could prove, video games were the ideal way to stay up all night.
Yusuke grinned suddenly. "You haven't seen Grandma's game room?" he asked. "Come on. I'll show you." He knew he'd spent many nights amusing himself with those games. The non-testing ones. Since she did have some normal games too.
Naomi blinked.
"What?" she asked as she set her tea down and got up. Whatever this 'game room' was, it sounded interesting. And even better, it sounded time-consuming. |
Yusuke grinned. "Both of you follow me." He led them to the game room, flicking the lights on. All the games turned on, beckoning the girls over with glowing lights and cheerful noises.
"Have at it. You don't even need quarters." |
"This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen," Naomi commented as she looked around at the games. "An arcade in a temple." She glanced at Osanna to see her friend's reaction.
Osanna was grinning from ear to ear. She really loved this place now. Arcade games and a great garden? Yeah, new favorite spot away from home.
"Old hag gets bored." Yusuke shrugged. "Damn woman has played them all so many times she has all the high scores." |
"Doesn't surprise me," Naomi replied. "She's had time to perfect her gaming skills." She grinned when she found a few old-school Atari games. "And she has great taste in games."
"Yeah, she does," Yusuke admitted. "I spent a lot of time here playing hooky." he grinned. "It was easier than going to the arcade in town."
Osanna snorted and started looking through the various games, clearly curious. |
"Somehow, that doesn't surprise me, either," Naomi replied, looking at him. "You don't strike me as academically inclined."
"Nope!" Yusuke grinned and moved to his favorite game. "Not at all. Video games are so much more fun." Osanna snorted at him.
"Shameless," Naomi teased. She was a casual gamer, and preferred to watch rather than play, so she moved over to see what was going on in the game that Yusuke started on.
Yusuke played as if he didn't have an audience, punching buttons and cursing under his breath. Osanna grinned as she watched.
Naomi grinned as well. He seemed to be doing well on the game, if one ignored the near-constant stream of cursing and swearing and threats against the game. Those just made it more amusing to watch.
"Having fun?" she asked mildly after a little while. |
Yusuke snorted. "Yeah. It's hard trying to beat the old hag's score," he grumbled, but he kept playing none the less. He barely glanced back at the girls. "You can go play other games if you want."
"I'm good just watching," Naomi replied. "Not much of a hardcore gamer, myself."
Yusuke nodded after a moment and went back to his games. Hey, he could still have fun, even if they weren't going to play.
