Anna nodded and started walking, not headed anywhere in particular yet. Mostly she was just looking around. She did stick close to Ezio, though, figuring it was harder for him than for anyone else.
Altair stayed close to Iris, although not stiflingly close. He knew she wouldn't tolerate this forever, after all. |
Indeed she wouldn't. Already, Iris was putting a bit of space between them, although not enough space that she would be singled out if anything happened. She did, however, pause when she walked by a flower-cart and saw a familiar kind of blossom.
"Anna," she called to her friend, waving her over. She grinned and pointed to the irises on the cart. |
Anna snorted when she looked. "Now all we need to do is get you one of those "Hi, my name is" stickers." She shook her head. "Gonna pick any up? You can be carrying your namesake around."
|
Iris snorted.
"I don't need to carry around a flower all day," she replied. "Irises aren't exactly small enough to pin in your hair, after all." |
"No, but it would be hilarious to try," Anna said with a wicked grin. She was allowed to tease Iris all she wanted. Best friend rights, and all that.
|
Iris snickered a bit and rolled her eyes.
"We could make you try," she suggested teasingly. "See how well you fare with a flower in your face." |
"But it wouldn't be appropriate for me," Anna teased right back. "Since I'm not named after a flower."
|
"Queen Anne's Lace," Iris pointed out, grinning. "Technically, you're right... It's a weed."
|
Anna snorted and rolled her eyes, heading off down the street again. "Luckily for me, I'm Anna, not Anne. Who would want to be an Anne? Then you'd have all sorts of references hanging over your head."
|
"If you still had one," Iris replied, biting her lip to keep from giggling too hard. Oh yes, she had fun with those kind of references. "I still remember that report in college on Henry VIII and his six wives, that was hysterical."
|
"It was hysterical," Anna agreed, rolling her eyes at Iris. "And you're ridiculous. Luckily for you, you can also blame it on hormones."
|
"Probably not yet," Iris protested. "Although I'm more than happy to blame it on being in a good mood if you like."
|
Anna snorted. "However you place the blame, be glad I'm not coming after you." She turned to grin playfully at Iris.
|
Iris grinned a bit and rolled her eyes, but settled back in for the walk. It was a nice evening out, after all, even after she noticed their roof-stalkers were back.
|
Anna noticed them too but she didn't say anything. Okay, yeah, one of them was just a freaking kid, no more than eighteen. Really? She was kind of insulted by that.
|
Iris noticed the teenager too, and raised an eyebrow.
"Really?" she commented. |
"I think I'm insulted," Anna said dryly, looking at the kid briefly before looking away.
Altair snorted. "Clearly they underestimate us," he said, his own voice dry. He didn't think much of these modern Assassins. |
"I feel vaguely ashamed," Ezio commented mildly. "If ever I get home, I will make sure my own assassins remain trained properly, to avoid this nonsense."
"And you know, all things considered, they probably get away with these shenanigans all the time," Iris commented to Anna. |
Altair snorted. "Mine all know better," he said quietly. And they did. He knew all his Assassins were good and well trained. If they weren't, they didn't get past apprenticeship.
"Oh I'm sure. Because clearly they haven't had a real threat here in far too long. They've gotten lax." Anna snorted. |
Ezio raised an eyebrow slightly, but didn't comment. He was sure the Arab's Assassins were well-trained, but that was a very long time ago, now.
"I'll bet everyone in the Middle East is busy, though," Iris commented. "And it wouldn't surprise me at all to find an undercover section of the US Army made of Assassins, either, at this point. It would make sense." |
"It would, actually. It really would." Anna shook her head. "Geeze, maybe we should look into that once we're back on our normal continent."
|
"I second that," Iris agreed, nodding. She made sure to keep an eye on their followers, though. She didn't quite trust the modern Italians yet.
|
"Is it bad that now I want to smack those two for not being stealthy enough?" Anna made a face. "I mean, granted, we've got two Master Assassins with us, but I can tell where they are, and he'll tell you I'm nowhere near as good at tracking as he is." She pointed at Ezio.
|
"So go ahead," Iris said, grinning a bit. "Either one of us could probably sneak circles around them, and clearly they don't think we have any sort of skill."
"I am tempted, myself," Ezio muttered. Really, this was too much. His own home faction, so obviously unskilled? Disgraceful. Iris was tempted, as well, and eyed a few low-hanging roof eaves briefly. She could be up and behind their stalkers before the poor things knew which way was up, and she knew it. |
"We could," Anna said quietly, glancing over at Ezio. "But then we'd give away more information about ourselves, and they wouldn't be so lax with the next pair they send after us. I don't know about you two, but I think I'm willing to let them believe we're incompetent for a little while longer. We'll prove otherwise soon enough."
Altair thought it over for a few moments before he nodded his agreement. She was right about that, and he thought it would be better if they had the element of surprise on their side. Much as he hated to admit, Anna could think things through satisfactorily. |
