Iris wrapped up her piece of chocolate in the wax paper and stashed it in her bag again, then looked directly up at Altair.
"I've had more intimidating-looking men than you try that trick," she said, not getting up yet. Ezio had slipped onto the roof as well, moving over to Anna. He was already plotting ways to get her for her comments. A little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, right? |
"I am not trying to intimidate," Altair replied. Which she should know very well, since he'd been intimidating a few times around her. Not to the extent he would be around, say, a tag he wanted to scare the crap out of first, but even so. "Come."
Anna looked over at Ezio for a moment before she got up and went back inside to go actually put her chocolate away and get shoes on again. She still preferred to walk around barefoot around the house. |
"I didn't say you were," Iris replied. Which was true. She'd only said more intimidating-looking men than him had done the same thing. She got to her feet easily. "Where are we going?"
Ezio waited for Anna to come back, still formulating some sort of plan. Threats hadn't worked, but the promise of chocolate had. And, thanks to his mother and sister, he knew where to get some. "Time for something new," he said when she came back out. |
"Come," was all he said again. He planned to take her climbing and then roof running and jumping. He figured it was time to start with that now, and get her used to it.
"What are you going to try to make me do this time?" Anna sounded more resigned than anything. She was already pretty much resigned to fighting him all the time. |
"Just a simple race," Ezio replied innocently, going over to the edge of the roof. The gap between their building and the next was small. He eyed the skyline, picking out an appropriate destination. Couldn't make this too easy, after all. "From this spot to the great church." He gestured to it. It was one of the tallest buildings, taller even than the minor church Iris had referred to earlier. Ezio had taken many Leaps of Faith off of the great church in the past.
"Where are we going?" Iris asked again as she followed Altair. |
"Alright." Anna looked at him for a moment. She could jump across these rooftops, since they weren't too high up, and they were generally flat. So she figured she'd be okay for that, and she could see a clear path to the church. And then she could get back on the ground.
Instead of answering, Altair headed the opposite direction of Ezio and Anna, climbing up to a higher building and then waiting for her to join him. "Your climbing is good, but you need to practice running up here." |
Iris blinked.
"Across the rooftops?" she asked, just to clarify. That shouldn't be too hard... "I'll meet you there," Ezio said. He didn't give Anna any more warning than that; he took off across the rooftops towards the goal. |
Altair nodded. "Head towards the docks," he instructed. The buildings there were uneven heights, which would be good practice for her.
Anna took off after him, making it across the first jump easily. She lost a bit of time detouring to stay where the buildings were closer together, but she also managed to send a flock of pigeons in his way. |
Ezio took the more direct route, the route he'd taken countless times before. The flock of pigeons barely fazed him, and he managed to get to the church quickly.
Iris looked toward the docks to get a feel for her route before taking a few steps back and launching herself to the next building. She freaked out a little in the air, but managed to land solidly and keep going. |
Anna arrived not long after him, barely panting as she sat down. "You know I'm not climbing that thing."
Altair followed her, mostly to make sure she didn't trip up and hurt herself. She was getting better, yes, but if she fell off the roof she'd likely end up with a broken limb and be unable to train for a while. Plus it would hurt her a lot, and he just didn't want to deal with that. |
"Alright," Ezio replied. He gave her a moment to catch her breath, and then grabbed her around the waist and started hauling her up the tower of the church. Once he got to the top, he set her on the platform. "Now, you can get down from here."
One Iris got to the last building before the docks, she stopped and flipped down from the roof, indulging in a bit of acrobatics as she did so. |
Anna stood there frozen once they got to the top. They were a long, long ways up. She started shaking, just a little bit, and she managed to take a half-step back towards the center of the platform. She could feel the panic attack coming on but for the fact that Ezio was still there, the bastard.
Altair nodded his approval as he landed next to her. "Good. Now back to the house." |
"You can get down any way you choose," Ezio said. "I will meet you at the bottom." He wouldn't leave, just in case she really did fall, but he wasn't going to hold her hand, either. Stepping back to the edge, he spread his arms and took a Leap of Faith back to the bottom.
Iris looked at Altair a little strangely. "There's no... task you want me to do here?" she asked. "No spontaneous exercise? Just going back?" |
Once Ezio actually left her up there, Anna sank down and curled into a little ball, her arms around her legs as she had a full-blown panic attack. She hiccuped a few times, rocking herself a little and shaking like a leaf, her breathing fast like she'd just sprinted a mile.
"Correct." Well. Sort of. This time he would make things more interesting, now that he knew she could run across the rooftops fairly easily. |
Iris watched him warily again, but nodded and climbed back up to the roof of the building again to head back to the building they'd been staying in. She was fairly sure she knew the way back.
|
This time Altair actually chased her, occasionally throwing rocks by her feet to startle her and make her go faster. Because it wasn't training if you weren't working for it.
|
Iris jumped a bit at the first couple of rocks that hit near her feet, but then she grinned and moved faster. This was actually kind of fun, and she managed to rebound off of a couple of walls to keep herself ahead of him.
|
Altair smirked and picked up the pace as well, keeping on her heels as he followed her back to the hideout. She was improving more rapidly than he'd anticipated, which was good.
|
Iris ended up pulling a few more acrobatics than Altair did to get back to the hideout, but she didn't end up falling and breaking anything, so she counted it as a success.
|
Altair nodded when they got back. She had already proven she could do that, which was good. And he had a vague feeling of misgiving, which he intended to follow.
"We're done for the day," he said, looking over at her before he started to climb up to the roof to get a better look around. |
Iris blinked.
"So soon?" she asked. Then she shrugged. Hey, she wasn't going to argue. Going inside, she went to see if Anna was back yet. |
Anna was still huddled up on top of the church tower where Ezio had left her. Because she was currently too terrified to move.
Altair looked around the city carefully, crouched on a ledge, and watched as Ezio made his way back to the hideout. |
Ezio got back to the hideout quickly, and ran across Altair first.
"Where is your apprentice?" he asked. |
"Inside. Why?" Altair frowned a little. Anna wasn't with him, and that was unusual. They didn't let the girls go out through Venice on their own yet.
|
"Because mine won't come down from the church tower," Ezio replied, already going inside to find Iris.
Less than a minute later, Iris was jumping along the rooftops again to go see what was up with Anna. |
