Altair followed, curious. This could be a potential problem, and if Iris couldn't get Anna to come back down, he would.
Anna was still huddled in the same place, although she did jerk a little when Iris came up over the side. |
"Hey," Iris said gently, sitting down next to Anna. "How did you even get up here?"
"He dragged me up here. Just picked me up, threw me over his shoulder, and climbed up here before I knew what was going on." Anna calmed a little bit when Iris sat next to her, immediately curling into her side.
Iris put an arm around her friend.
"This is a little high," she allowed. It wasn't a bad climb, but it was much higher than the rest of the city. "The climb isn't bad, though. You could make it." |
Anna swallowed hard. "He dumped me on the ground, said he'd meet me on the bottom, and jumped off." She was slowly calming down, but she was not going to forgive Ezio for this.
"He jumped off?" Iris asked, raising an eyebrow in disbelief. "Even in our proper time, people tend not to survive such things unscathed."
Anna nodded. "Yeah. He jumped off." She shivered briefly. "I didn't even see the way we came up, let alone how to get down. If I even could."
"The way up is easy," Iris replied. "Plenty of places to hang on. And there are some windows to inside about half-way down." So that Anna could go inside and be off the building sooner, if she needed.
Anna nodded slowly at that, trying to get herself to actually think long enough to get down again. Because otherwise she would be even more stuck.
"Come on," Iris said, getting up and holding a hand out to her friend. "I'll go down with you and make sure nothing happens."
Anna nodded and took her hand, getting up and moving over to the edge. She almost turned right back around to go back to the center of the roof, but she managed not to, shaking just a little. Oh crap she was going to die.
"Come on," Iris coaxed. "Little bit at a time, feet first." She slid down the foot or so to the first major foothold and waited for Anna. "Slow and steady, that's all."
Anna took a deep breath and started down the tower slowly. Very slowly. See, she could climb, but most of the time she was too terrified to.
And the instant she got to a window she pushed it open and ducked inside. |
Iris followed her in the window, just to keep track of her. She didn't trust Anna not to get lost in the church at the moment, with how flustered she was from the climb.
Anna made her way down ladders and stairs into the church proper, and then she took a moment to sort of compose herself before she walked outside again. Definitely not going to forgive Ezio for this.
Iris stayed with her until they got back to the hideout.
"Feel a little better now?" she asked as they got closer. |
"A little." Anna knew Altair was trailing them, but she didn't care. At that point, all she wanted to do was go curl up in bed for a while. She didn't even look at Ezio as she made her way inside and to the back room she shared with Iris.
Iris, however, did acknowledge him as they went inside.
"Bad idea," she said simply. Then she kept walking into the room. Ezio just raised an eyebrow as they went into the shared room. |
Altair shrugged. "It would seem your apprentice is scared of heights." He looked after the girls for a few moments.
Anna pulled off her shoes and overcoat and pants so she was left in her underthings and she curled up in bed. |
"So it would seem," Ezio murmured. He was already thinking of ways to get around that.
Iris shed her outer layers as well and got comfortable on her own bed. "We can push him off a cliff or something tomorrow," she said to Anna. |
Anna managed to quirk a smile. "Nah. We can shove him into the river. The water here is filthy. It'll take him hours to wash that smell off."
Altair smirked. "I wish you luck, Brother." He clapped Ezio on the shoulder before moving up to the roof. |
Iris snickered.
"Oh yes," she said. "Yes we should." Ezio just rolled his eyes. "I will think of something," he said as Altair walked away. |
"That sounds good to me. Maybe pushed him back in again when he's about to get out." Anna pulled her blankets up around her, pacifying herself with thoughts of revenge.
"Just don't drown him," Iris replied. "He's the only one we know in Italy."
The next day Anna waited, watching as Ezio went out to "go see a friend". She was half-way sure said 'friend' was a lady, and she wanted revenge on him anyway. So she waited until he was well on his way, walking along by the river, to run up behind him and shove him into the river.
Altair had heard of this plan and sat back and watched. He didn't help the girls, but he didn't warn Ezio, either. He just watched. Because if Anna succeeded then clearly Ezio wasn't paying enough attention. |
