"Throwing me under the bus?" Elaine teased her friend. "You could call him before we leave."
Kae snorted. "Yes, I could. But it is way more amusing to listen to you yelling at people."
Elaine snorted.
"We'll see if I have to," she said. "Once everyone else finally leaves and we have a moment of peace." |
Kae nodded, settling behind the counter to do a bit of work before closing time. Everyone trooped out obediently at closing time, and she gathered up her things, getting ready to head home.
Elaine basked in the quiet for a bit once everyone left.
"Listen," she said to Kae. "No running, no yelling, no babbling in Norse. Just... quiet." |
"It is glorious." Kae smiled, reveling in the peace and quiet for a full minute before she started moving again. "Alright, now we need to get home so we can eat and then flop over for a while."
"Right," Elaine said, feeling around in her purse to make sure she had everything. Then she pulled out her cell phone and handed it to Kae. "Dial for me, please?" If she was going to call Fury, she wanted to do it before she changed her mind.
Kae grinned and dialed the number, hitting call before she handed it back to Elaine. "There you go. Have fun."
Elaine snorted and listened to the ringing on the other end. She didn't have to wait long.
"I'm busy." "I don't care," Elaine replied mildly. |
Kae grinned, leaning closer to listen in. Yeah, that was Fury, alright. This would be an interesting conversation.
On the other end of the line, Fury sighed. "What's the problem?" |
"Kae and I think we deserve a raise," Elaine said. "Nowhere in our job descriptions does it specify babysitting a god buzzed on caffeine, or his mischief-prone brother."
Fury was silent for a few moments. "Who gave Thor coffee?" he asked, sounding resigned. It was just one of those things he could almost see, and was very glad he didn't have to deal with. "It was Stark, wasn't it?"
"You shouldn't have to ask that question," Elaine replied. "Nobody but Stark would do that. And it almost wasn't a problem, until Thor started bouncing around and babbling in Norse." She sighed. "And then apparently Loki thought it was a great idea to hide one of Kae's crutches while his brother was too buzzed to bother stopping him."
Fury had to hide his amusement. "Alright. I'll see to it that you're appropriate compensated. And I'll talk to Stark." He paused for a moment. "For the record, neither of you have job descriptions, so you'll need a new excuse next time." With that, he hung up.
Elaine snorted.
"He's still a jerk," she commented to Kae. "But apparently we're getting our hazard pay for looking after a pair of gods, so it's all good." |
Kae snorted. "Our paychecks are going to be good," she said with a brief grin, leading the way out of the library so Elaine could lock up. "As often as they come in."
Elaine snorted as well and followed her friend.
"No kidding," she agreed. "And hopefully Stark gets the hint that coffee and gods of thunder do not mix." |
"Oh I hope so. Otherwise the library won't be standing in another week or two." Kae grimaced.
"Yeah, really," Elaine agreed. Digging out her key, she locked up the library and followed Kae to the car. "I feel like I need a drink."
"Fortunately for us, we still have alcohol left from the last binge." Kae grinned. "And we still have sodas and snacks. So we're all set."
"Good," Elaine said. "...But I refuse to drink Kahlua tonight. No more coffee till morning. Not after today."
"Okay, no Kahlua. We still have Irish cream, though." Kae grinned. "And I've still got some chocolate almond milk."
"What about that orange vodka?" Elaine asked. "Nothing creamy tonight. Rum and coke, or that orange vodka with the Sprite." Less of it, certainly, but it was something different.
"Alrighty. I can work with that. Decided you like the orange vodka with the Sprite, huh?" Kae grinned. She'd known that was a genius idea.
"I want something brighter and sharper tonight," Elaine admitted. "Something not sweet and creamy."
