Bruce made his way back to where the others were waiting. He saw Kae pacing, and was glad she was at least still touching the floor.
"He'll be alright for now," he said in general. "He's getting some sleep." |
The others relaxed a little at that. Coulson hadn't been able to get a proper report out of Tony, and that would be much easier once he was awake again and lucid.
"So what happened?" Steve looked at Bruce, frowning a little. |
Bruce sighed a bit. He'd known the questions were coming.
"There were a lot of attempts to recreate the super-soldier-serum," he said. "One of them was something called the Extremis virus. In basic terms, the virus tries to rewrite the part of the brain that holds the blueprint, you could say, of the whole body. But the flaw in this particular attempt at the serum is that the virus rewrites the brain into what is essentially an organic supercomputer, and the brain rewrites the body in the same fashion." |
"So you're telling us that Tony got turned into a living supercomputer," Kae said, her voice even.
"That sounds... okay. For Tony, anyway," Steve offered cautiously. "And dangerous," Coulson pointed out dryly. "For everyone." |
"There has never been a case of successful Extremis injection," Bruce pointed out. "The fact that Tony even came back means that something different must have happened."
|
Kae left the kitchen with a muttered excuse, going down to the gym to work off some energy.
Steve watched her go before he looked at Bruce again. "How is he so far?" he asked quietly. "Is he going to be okay?" |
"He's sleeping right now," Bruce said. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "To be honest, I don't know what the virus will do to him, or even what it's already done. It's a miracle he's even still with us." Although, to be fair, they all knew Tony made miracles a fairly regular habit.
|
Steve nodded, well aware of Tony's track record with near-death experiences and miracles. "Alright. You look like you could use some rest yourself," he said gently.
|
"That's, uh... not a good idea right now, Captain," Bruce said, shaking his head a bit. "I shouldn't let my guard down right now, the, uh, Other Guy's restless." With good reason, Bruce had to admit; Hulk liked Tony, and this whole situation had him on edge even if the Hulk didn't understand exactly why.
|
"Then go sit for a while," Steve said. "I'll keep an eye on Tony. You need to rest or relax or do something else for a bit or you'll burn yourself out before he even wakes up."
|
"I'll be alright, Captain," Bruce said. "But I appreciate the concern. I may as well go keep an eye on Kae for now. I'll check in on Tony in a bit, leave him alone for now."
|
Steve nodded after a moment and went back to sit near Elaine again, frowning and thinking over the implications of what Bruce had said.
Kae was busy trying to teach herself how to fly. So far, the best she'd done was make an invisible trampoline, which she was currently sitting in the middle of two feet above the floor. |
Elaine just snuggled close to Steve when he sat down, tucking herself tightly against his side.
Bruce didn't mind the quiet when he got to the gym. He just sat on the floor near Kae and worked on regulating his breathing and heart rate. Not quite meditating, but close. |
Steve put his arms around her, rubbing her back a little and staying quiet for the most part. This was harder than he'd thought.
Kae kept quiet for him so she wouldn't bother him, instead laying down and looking up at the ceiling. |
Elaine just stayed there with him quietly, making no move to get up.
After a few minutes, Bruce opened his eyes again. There was distinctly less green in them now. "How are you holding up?" he asked Kae gently. |
After a little while, Steve scooped up Elaine and took her down to his room so they could sit and not worry about the others for a while, because he needed some time and space away from the others to think for now.
"Not very well," Kae admitted, her voice flat. "I can't think about it without wanting to kill someone." |
Elaine just clung to Steve when he scooped her up.
"Trust me when I say I know that feeling well," Bruce replied. |
Steve just settled down with her in his lap, his arms still tight around her as he kept himself calm. He'd have to find out later where they found him and who did this.
Kae nodded and sighed. "Yeah, figured you would. Doesn't make it easier." |
Elaine snuggled close, resting her head on his shoulder.
"So I was going to surprise you tonight with something I bought, but I think it'll have to wait," she commented softly. "No, it doesn't," Bruce agreed. "But we'll make sure everything turns out alright." |
"Tomorrow night might be better," Steve agreed quietly, apologetically. "I don't think any of us will be settling much until we know more."
Kae sighed and let herself drop to the floor next to him, curling against his side. |
"Yeah," Elaine agreed softly. She settled in with him, just snuggling in.
Bruce pulled her into his arms, letting her get comfortable. "I'm going to go check on Tony in a little bit," he said. "I'll let you know if anything's changed when I do." |
Kae nodded, snuggling closer to him and trying to relax. "You okay still?" she asked quietly, glancing up at him.
|
"Okay enough," Bruce replied. "The Other Guy is still a bit edgy, but nothing I can't handle."
|
Kae nodded and started carding her fingers through his hair after a few moments, rubbing at his scalp. Because she knew he liked that, even if he wouldn't admit it.
|
Bruce relaxed slightly as she did that, sighing inaudibly. Yes, he did like that but more to the point, the Hulk liked it. That was the important thing.
