Peggy went into the main library and looked around.
"Ah, hello," she said when she saw Kae. "You must be one of Howard's guests." |
"Yes, I am," Kae said, blinking at her and setting her book down. "My name is Kae. Kae King."
"Margret Carter," Peggy replied. "Pleasure to meet you, Ms. King. Most people call me Peggy." She sat down in one of the chairs near Kae.
And Kae damn near flipped out at that, because, hello, even she knew about Peggy.
"It's very nice to meet you, as well, Peggy. Please, call me Kae, no one ever calls me Ms. King." |
"Alright," Peggy replied, nodding. She was watching Kae's reaction carefully. "I take it you've heard of me, then."
"I have," Kae replied carefully. "I don't know how much more I can tell you, though."
"Howard said as much," Peggy replied, nodding. "And your... partner? Colleague?"
"She's in her room. She's working on how to get us back home." Kae shrugged. "But I can go get her if you want to meet her."
Peggy almost said not to worry about it, but stopped and nodded a bit.
"That might be best," she said. "I really would like to talk to you both." |
Kae nodded. "Give me two minutes," she said before she went to go fetch Elaine. She stopped outside the door and knocked, quietly, in case Elaine was in the middle of magic stuff.
Elaine was really just meditating for the moment, and answered the door quickly.
"What's up?" she asked when she saw Kae. |
"You're not going to believe who Howard called and is now waiting for us in the library." Kae was watching Elaine carefully though.
"Who?" Elaine asked cautiously. "Someone we know about? Tell me it's not Fury, that would just be weird."
"No, not Fury." Kae paused for a moment. "Peggy."
That made Elaine stop.
"Peggy?" she repeated. She wasn't sure if this would end well or not. "And she wants to talk to us?" |
"Yeah, at least briefly." Kae looked at her. "I can always make your excuses if you need to leave."
"No," Elaine said after a moment. "No, I can do this. Let's go talk to her." Because if nothing else, she did want to meet Peggy, at least.
Kae nodded and led the way back to the library, looking at Peggy. "Peggy, this is Elaine. Elaine, Peggy."
"Good to meet you," Elaine said. She could immediately see why Steve had loved her; Peggy definitely did not look like a woman one should mess with.
"And you," Peggy replied. "Your colleague was just telling me that neither of you are from around here?" "That's right," Elaine said cautiously. |
"I see." Peggy looked at them both for several moments. "Howard mentioned something else."
"Why am I not surprised?" Kae asked with a little grin. "Ask away." "He mentioned that... you two know Steve." There was a kind of quiet, desperate hope in her voice. |
Elaine bit her lip a little, and then nodded.
"We do," she said softly. "He's fine. Still adjusting, a bit, but he's alright." |
Peggy looked relieved for a moment before she gathered her composure again. "Good. That's good. I'm glad someone found him. Howard's been trying for months."
"It's going to take a long time," Elaine said hesitantly. "I never bothered asking who found him, or exactly when, but it takes a long time."
Peggy nodded. "I understand," she said quietly. "As long as he's safe and happy, that's all I can hope for." She smiled a bit.
Elaine fought with herself for a moment.
"Listen, promise not to tell anyone about this..." With that, she held out a hand and called up an illusion of Steve, one of her more recent memories. |
