Howard nodded again. "Well, if it's technology, I could take a look at it," he said, a little hopefully. He still wanted to get his hands on Kae's phone, after all.
"It's... not," Elaine said cautiously. "And you really don't want to ask what it is, because you're not going to like the answer." Not if he was anything like Tony, at least.
Howard huffed and was going to ask more when Jarvis coughed quietly, reminding them that there was food and Howard did need to let his guests eat. So he trailed off into grumbling instead, getting a bit of food and making sure the girls got food too.
Elaine bit her lip slightly. The scene was just so familiar, it was unreal. She felt like she was listening to Tony and Jarvis the AI, instead of Howard and Jarvis the Butler.
Kae was feeling the same way, and it was really unsettling. But she made herself get a bit of food and eat slowly. Really, Tony was so much like his father at this point, it was insane.
Dinner didn't last too much longer, and the dishes were cleared away quickly. Quickly enough that Elaine expected Howard to ask about the time travel again.
And Howard would have asked, except that Jarvis interfered.
"Sir, perhaps your guests would like to see the city tomorrow. You are scheduled to go talk with a contractor; perhaps they should go with you?" |
Howard blinked.
"That's a great idea," he said. He looked at the girls. "What do you say?" |
Kae blinked before she shrugged. "Sure," she agreed. "I'd like to see the city, long as you're going there anyway. Could be fun."
"Great," Howard said. "Good plan."
Jarvis nodded. "Very good, sir. Ladies, I'm sure you'll both want to be well rested for tomorrow." He raised an eyebrow a bit at them, giving them a neat out before Howard could try to pin them down with more questions.
Elaine saw the out for what it was and nodded.
"Right," she said, getting up. "Dinner was wonderful, thank you. I think I'm going to head to bed." |
"Same here, it's been a long day," Kae said, also getting up. She beat a hasty retreat with Elaine, grinning briefly.
"I feel kind of all-powerful," Elaine murmured to Kae as they escaped. "Jarvis is on our side."
"That's because Jarvis is still awesome." Kae grinned as she headed back towards their rooms. "No wonder Tony loved him so much."
"No kidding," Elaine agreed, heading towards her room. "Tony pinned his personality down really well, too."
"He did." Kae smiled a bit. "We'll have to tell him when we get back."
Elaine nodded in agreement.
"Yes we will," she said. "We'll have to tell him about everything. Or everything we think he'll enjoy." |
"Yeah. Not so much about Howard, at least not at first." Kae shook her head a bit. "Not that I blame him, not from how Howard had treated Tony as a child.
"Right," Elaine said. "I still kind of want to punch him for that."
"I really want to punch him for that. But not now." Kae shook her head. "Maybe later. Maybe we can bribe Peggy to do it for us in a few years."
"Won't be as satisfying," Elaine said. She sighed. "I didn't expect to like Peggy as much as I do."
"Is that a bad thing?" Kae asked, raising her eyebrows. Because she was well aware Peggy was still a bit of a sore subject.
"I'm... not sure," Elaine admitted. "I mean, it's a moot point, once we get back home, but still."
"Yeah." Kae shook her head a bit. "Well, maybe it won't be an issue. If we're not here for long, I doubt we'll run into her again, and you can be as ambivalent and confused as you want."
