"We'll see," Elaine said. "I mean, she's a nice person, it's obvious. I can see why he cares for her. And we've already talked about it, so there's really nothing to worry about, but I never thought that something like this would happen. You can't really plan for something like this."
"Yeah, that's kind of hard to anticipate," Kae said with a brief grin. "Well, I dunno what to tell you. Just try not to think about it too much."
"Yeah, I'll try," Elaine said. "And I'll make sure not to mention Steve in connection to Nessa and Bram while we're here. That's not a detail any of them need to know about."
"No, not at all. Even telling them an approximate year is bad." Kae shook her head a bit. "The less we can get away with telling them, the better."
"Yeah," Elaine agreed. "Now we should get some rest, if we're going out wandering the city tomorrow."
"Yeah, we should." Kae yawned a bit. "I'll see you in the morning. Try to get some sleep."
Elaine nodded and headed into her own room to get some sleep.
The next morning she found herself following the smell of coffee back into the dining room. "I don't know what blend that is, but it smells amazing," she commented. |
Howard quirked a grin at her. "It's a personal blend," he said. "I've got a supplier that mixes it for me. There's plenty left." He sat at the table and pulled the newspaper over, going to look through the stocks and the business section first.
"It smells fantastic," Elaine said as she poured herself some. She tasted it an sighed. "And tastes even better."
Howard just grinned smugly. "I don't get anything substandard," he said. "Have as much as you like, we've got an hour or so before we have to go."
Elaine just grinned.
"You sound like a friend of mine," she said as she sat down and reached for some breakfast. |
Howard snorted a bit but didn't say anything else, just letting her eat.
It didn't take long for Kae to join them, and she enjoyed her own coffee thoroughly. |
Once the coffee was gone, Elaine looked at Howard.
"So what's the plan for today?" she asked. |
"We need to leave in about fifteen minutes, I'm going to meet up with my contractors. You two are free to wander around as much as you want, we'll meet up in the afternoon again." Howard shrugged.
"Alright," Elaine said, nodding. "We can do that." Maybe wandering around would give her an idea of how to get them back home.
Howard nodded and got up, going to go finish getting ready. Kae yawned a bit.
"Well I guess we should get ready to go, if you're not already." |
"Yeah," Elaine said, nodding and getting up. "Time to get ready." She grinned. "We'll have to tell Tony about that coffee, it was really good."
"It was good," Kae agreed, walking with her back to their rooms so she could get her shoes on and grab what she needed to go out.
Elaine was ready about the same time Kae was, and they went to wait for Howard.
Fortunately, their adventures that day went off abnormally well. They didn't get kidnapped, no one even looked at them weird, and they got to wander around New York in the late 40's. Win-win, really, as far as Kae was concerned.
Elaine was pleased, too. She enjoyed the chance to get to know the time Steve was from, and she made sure to take a lot of mental notes about everything.
Since Kae hadn't heard anything to the contrary about the spell being unraveled, she wasn't expecting anything to happen.
So when she woke up in yet another new place, fairly certain that she wasn't home yet, the first thing she did was roll over and glower at Elaine. |
Elaine was already up, having felt the spell taking hold.
"Working on it," she said when she heard Kae moving around. |
Kae sighed and shook her head, stretching out a bit and getting up to investigate wherever they were this time.
After a few minutes, Elaine sighed.
"Alright, I see what happened," she said. "The spell stuttered. It should pick up again soon and take us back the rest of the way. We may just be here for a day or so." |
