"You're always busy," Elaine retorted. "Notice how that doesn't stop me from calling."
"I have noticed." Fury was quiet for a moment. "I heard what happened."
Elaine was glad he'd already heard, it spared her from having to explain again. "You may as well just put us on regular payroll at this point," she said instead. "It might be easier in the long run."
"Already done," Fury said evenly. "Anything else?" Because he had the feeling there was more to it than just that.
Elaine was quiet for a moment.
"I don't suppose you know of any way to reverse what happened?" she asked finally. |
"I don't, no. But I'm having people look into it." Fury was quiet for a few moments. "I've told Rogers to stay away for a few days."
"Alright," Elaine said after a moment. "That's probably best." Even though the thought of Steve staying away twisted her heart, she knew it was for the best that he kept his distance.
"Until we figure things out." Fury shrugged. "Don't do anything stupid."
"I won't," Elaine replied. "I know what I am and not allowed to do."
"Good. I'll get back to you later, then." Fury gave her a few moments to see if she had anything else to say.
"Alright," Elaine said. She was quiet for a moment. "When I've got myself sorted out, I'll let you know. The information might be useful."
"Take your time." Fury's voice was quiet. "You have my number if anything comes up." That was as close as he'd come to saying that he'd help her out.
"Thanks," Elaine said. She grinned a bit. "I'll leave you to terrorizing your staff now."
Fury just snorted and went back to his work. Because he refused to admit that he terrorized his staff.
It took Elaine almost a week to get herself together enough to be able to face work again, and even then, she wasn't looking forward to it. It was still hard for her to pick apart what was genuine and what wasn't when she felt something, but she couldn't avoid work forever.
She did, however, make sure the house was well-stocked with Kahlua and Bailey's. |
Kae had been kept fairly busy the whole time too, and she kept some alcohol around of her own, some straight whiskey. And some flavored vodka. Because you never knew when those might come in handy.
So when Tony called and told her that Thor was smashed again and needed a place to hang out, she just sighed. |
"What's wrong?" Elaine asked when she heard Kae sigh.
"Thor's drunk. Apparently he's coming to spend the night, again." Kae shrugged. "No more alcohol for him."
Elaine couldn't help but grin a bit.
"Ten bucks says he challenged Bacchus again," she said. |
Kae laughed. "I'm not betting that! There's like a 95% chance that you're right." She grinned.
"What would be the reason for the other five percent?" Elaine asked.
"His brother, or he met some other god. I mean, think about it. There are a lot of gods. He could have been drinking with one of the others, possibly."
Elaine snorted.
"Loki won't deal with him drunk," she pointed out. "And Thor's friends with Bacchus. At least up it to 99%." She paused when she heard heavy, albeit unsteady, footsteps on the front walk. "And I think he's here." |
"It wouldn't surprise me." Kae smiled a little. "I'll go let him in." She walked over to the front door, more comfortable with her prosthetic leg now, and opened the door for Thor.
Thor stumbled into the house, not so drunk he was passing out yet but definitely smashed.
"Into the guest room," Elaine said as she carefully pointed him in the right direction. |
