Steve smiled and ran his thumb over her knuckles before he let her off on her floor, continuing up to his to get changed and ready to go out.

Elaine went and put on jeans and a simple t-shirt. She had only brought a couple of changes of clothes; they were only planning on staying in the tower for a few days before heading back home, and she'd brought very basic mix-and-match clothing that she could put on at random and still look okay. After pulling back her hair, she made her way out to the living room of the suite to wait for Steve.

Steve was already there, dressed in jeans and a plain t-shirt.

"Ready to go?" he asked quietly, walking over to her.

Elaine nodded.

"Yeah," she said. "Let's go."

Steve nodded and led the way down to one of Tony's cars. He was sure Tony wouldn't mind him borrowing it, and he was planning to return it in perfect condition anyway. He helped Elaine in and then drove them back to the all-night diner, sitting across from her again.

Elaine recognized the sounds and smells of the all-night diner, and smiled a bit when the third-shift cook greeted Steve by name.

"I knew you were a regular," she teased him.

Steve laughed quietly. "Well, when punching bags don't work, I come here," he said with an unabashed grin, settling in.

"So what kind of pie would you like?"

"I think tonight is an apple pie kind of night," Elaine said. She didn't even have to think about that one. She grinned a bit. "What about you?"

"Apple pie," Steve answered immediately. Then he blushed a little, remembering her teasing from the last time they'd been there. "It's really good apple pie."

Elaine bit her lip a little, grinning and holding back some laughter.

"Don't worry, I won't tease you too much about it," she said. "All-American comfort food and everything."

Steve laughed quietly and shook his head, although the waitress brought them two slices of pie and a cup of coffee for him.

"Anything to drink, miss?" the waitress asked with a little smile.

"Just some tea," Elaine said. "Green if you have it, black if you don't." She made a mental note to leave some of her favorite blends at the tower, especially if they were going to be spending more time there.

The waitress nodded and moved away again, coming back a few minutes later with a steaming cup of green tea.

"Anything else for you two?"

"Not for right now. Thank you." Steve shot the woman a smile, and she nodded and moved away. "Eat your pie," he told Elaine, already working on a big bite of his.

Elaine raised an eyebrow, but grinned.

"Yes sir," she replied teasingly, feeling around briefly for her fork and taking a bite of the pie. Oh, it was definitely good pie.

Steve ate his piece and then leaned back in his chair, very content. He let out a quiet sigh, sipping on the remains of his coffee.

"Told you it was good pie," he said quietly.

"It's fantastic pie," Elaine said as she finished off her piece. Then she sipped her tea. "Bag-tea, though. But the pie makes up for it."

Steve chuckled. "The coffee is good," he said, as if that made up for the bad tea. Which it did, in his mind.

"My tea also has a tenth the caffeine," Elaine pointed out with a bit of a grin. "For if I decide to give sleep another shot."

Steve smiled ruefully. "Yeah," he agreed quietly. "That would be good for you." Since caffeine no longer effected him, he didn't have to worry much about that. And he sometimes forgot normal people did, since Tony and Bruce practically lived off coffee.

Elaine nodded, sipping her tea.

"I guess I should give you a head's-up about Thanksgiving, huh?" she asked after a moment of comfortable silence. "I wasn't kidding about there being a lot of people there for the holiday. My dad's side of the family is kind of big."

"Define 'kind of'," Steve said cautiously. Sure, he'd been in crowds before, but he'd never been really comfortable with them. And as he didn't have a proper family of his own, and hadn't for a long, long time, he wasn't entirely sure how this was going to go.

"I wasn't kidding on the whole 'meal for thirty' thing," Elaine replied. She fiddled with her tea mug for a moment. "My grandparents, my dad and his two brothers, my mom, my two aunts. Four cousins older than me, all male. One is married, and his wife will be there. Another has a daughter, she'll be there. One has a girlfriend, she'll be there. One older cousin by marriage, and her daughter, and her daughter's kids. That's eighteen right there. Six younger cousins, four male and two female, that makes twenty four. And then you and I is twenty-six."

Steve's eyes widened. "Twenty six?" he asked quietly. "That's... a lot of people." And he wouldn't say he wasn't nervous, because he was. "Well... I guess I should try and make a good impression, then."

"I won't make you go if that many people makes you uncomfortable," Elaine said quickly. "I just wanted to let you know what you were agreeing to."

Steve shook his head. "I agreed to go," he said quietly. "Besides, it'll only be for a day. I can handle that." He paused. "And if I can't, Tony will never let me live it down."
