"No, I think I'll talk to him. You talked to him last time, I think, it's my turn." Kae shrugged. "You go cuddle Steve like I know you want to, I'll be back in a few minutes."
|
Elaine blushed a little.
"Hush you," she said. After a second, she added, "it's not polite to cuddle at breakfast, anyways." |
Kae managed a snicker. "Yeah, yeah. Go on. I'll be up in a few minutes." She was already grabbing her cell phone to call Fury.
|
Elaine nodded, still a bit pink, and went back to join the others in the main room.
"She'll be alright," she said as she went to try to find an open place to sit. Meanwhile, Fury, like always, picked up his phone on the first ring. "I'm busy." |
Steve immediately made room next to him for her to sit, smiling faintly.
"Glad to hear it." "Too damn bad. We need to talk." Kae was using her no nonsense, "I take no bullshit" voice. |
"I don't have time for your whining about Stark today," Fury said shortly. "There are other things to worry about."
|
"Like the fact that Elaine and I have our faces splashed across every major news channel in the nation?" Kae shot back, her eyes narrowing. Fury was just pissing her off today.
|
"Yes, like that," Fury replied tersely. "I have people working on it as we speak. Although, next time tell your friend not to go on a midnight date with Captain America in one of Stark's cars, and maybe make my job a little easier."
|
"Oh yes, because we live to make your lives easier," Kae growled. "We're already spending more time with the Avengers than any of your SHIELD agents, and I'm not counting Clint and Natasha in that." She sighed. "I'll tell her, but seriously, what are we supposed to do? Hide out in the Tower for a few weeks while people forget about us?"
|
"With this much attention?" Fury snorted. "You'll be lucky if people only know your faces instead of your life stories. Which is what I'm working on, if you'll kindly allow me to get back to my job."
|
"Hey, just had to make sure shit was actually getting done." Kae snorted. "Let me know when you know anything new. Like if we have to find a bomb shelter to live in because the world knows too much about us."
|
"When I have something new, you'll find out," Fury replied. With that, he hung up.
|
Kae put her phone back in her pocket, though for a few moments she wanted to throw it instead. So she was very surprised when a book zoomed across to hit the wall, and a glass vase exploded. She yelped as glass shards scattered across the room, which only made a few more glasses explode from the cupboards.
|
In the next room, Elaine jumped when she heard glass breaking.
"What was that?" she asked. Louder, she called, "Kae?" |
Tony didn't wait for her to reply, just moving into the other room to check on Kae.
"I'm okay," she said, glancing over at Tony, visibly shaking, picking out a few pieces of glass. "Shut up," Tony ordered, picking her up and ignoring her startled yelp. "Bruce!" Steve had followed Tony to make sure everything was okay before he went back to Elaine. "She's okay. But more glass exploded in he other room." He was frowning, very confused. |
Bruce went to see what was going on, and picked his way around the shards of glass to get to Kae and Tony.
"What happened?" he asked as he looked Kae over to make sure she was alright. He could see where the glass had gotten her, but he wanted to make sure there was nothing more serious. "More glass exploded?" Elaine asked. "But glass doesn't do that normally." Getting up, she followed the sound of commotion. "What's going on?" |
"That's what we're trying to figure out," Tony ground out, glancing over at Elaine. "Glass does not spontaneously explode."
Kae watched Bruce, her eyes wide and her hands shaking. She was seriously freaking out now. "Kae." Tony looked down at her. "What happened?" "I was talking to Fury," Kae said quietly. "He said that the world is probably trying to dig up our life stories now, and I was kind of pissed off. I wanted to throw my phone across the room, but I didn't, and things just started... exploding." |
Elaine's brow furrowed as she pondered that. That... was really, really weird.
"You got pissed off and things started exploding?" she asked as Bruce helped Kae over to a chair so he could help her with the cuts from the glass. |
"Basically. I got mad and a book flew across the room and the vase exploded, and then I freaked out and a bunch of glasses exploded." Kae shrugged, settling carefully into the chair. "Bruce, I can do that, you don't have to."
"Kae," Tony said, his voice even. "Shut up and let him." |
Elaine was quiet for a moment, trying to figure things out. She wasn't succeeding.
"You guys wouldn't happen to know any experts on this kind of shit who aren't named Nick Fury, would you?" she finally asked. "Because I'm drawing a blank here." |
"Unfortunately, no," Tony said, growling a little. Then he paused. "Although... That guy we fought a week ago. What was it he called himself? Magnetron?"
"Magneto," Kae said, glancing at him. "Yeah, right, him. He said something about mutations, and I remember reading a paper on it by a Professor Something-or-other. Couldn't hurt to go look up that paper again..." |
"If it's a scientific paper, it won't be hard to find," Elaine commented. "Be better if we knew who wrote it, but not impossible."
"Xavier," Bruce spoke up. "Professor Charles Xavier. I've been contacted by him once or twice." When nobody said anything for a moment, he glanced around. "What? The Other Guy is technically a mutation, you know. A forced one, but still." He shrugged a bit. "I bet Fury knows the guy, he seems to know everyone like that." |
"Well Fury's busy," Kae said, absently shuffling over closer to Bruce. "Maybe we can find his information ourselves so we can talk to Professor Xavier ourselves?"
"Not a bad idea. JARVIS, get on that." Tony pushed Kae a little farther over before he sat next to her. Because while he might not say anything, he was worried. |
It didn't take Bruce long to finish patching Kae up.
"That should be it," he said. "Keep an eye on them, let me know if anything gets infected." |
Kae nodded, leaning back against the chair. "I think I'm going to go lay down for a bit."
"Sure. I'll let you know when I get hold of this Xavier guy." Tony got up and helped her up before he started shooing people out. |
