"Need a hand with anything?" Elaine asked as she heard Kae puttering around the kitchen. She might not be able to see, but she could take direction.
"If you want to get out bowls and forks, I'll get everything else. I figured we can wait on the alcohol until after dinner." Kae got out glasses and poured tea for them both, glancing over at the microwave as it beeped at her.
"Sure thing," Elaine replied. She carefully made her way around the perimeter of the kitchen, counting drawers with her fingers until she found the right one. Reaching up to the cabinet above it, she pulled down two bowls, and then opened the drawer itself and pulled out a pair of forks. She set them on the counter and stepped away again.
"Another minute or two and then it'll be ready. I assume you want cheese on yours?" Kae glanced over at her, pulling out parmesan from the fridge. Hey, she liked her cheese.
"Please," Elaine replied. She grinned a bit. "Are you telling me to get my blind self into the living room so I'm out of your way?"
"Only if you want food," Kae shot right back with a playful grin. This was normal for them, and it helped settle her nerves.
Elaine stuck out her tongue in Kae's general direction and wandered her way back to the living room. Settling into the chair, she reached over and turned on the TV. She couldn't watch it, but she could listen to it, and it wasn't too bad.
Kae brought food over for both of them, settling down in her own chair and setting her crutches off to the side. Unlike Elaine, she couldn't even go around the house without those. At least, not very easily.
"I think we left it on Discovery channel," Elaine said as she accepted the bowl. "I hear Mike Rowe. But he does voice-overs for a lot of things, so I'm not too sure."
"Nope, you're right, it's Discovery." Kae stretched out and settled down. "I can always switch it if you want."
"I'm good with it," Elaine replied. She took a few bites of her dinner. "So are you sure you're okay?"
"I'm... getting used to it." Kae shrugged. "It's not like we're directly related, and he's not a long-lost brother or something like that, so I can deal with it. He's just a sort-of cousin."
"A sort-of cousin who happens to be richer than God and owns probably half of the world's technology companies," Elaine pointed out.
"Just as I was getting used to it, too." Kae stuck her tongue out. "Okay, fine. But it's not like he cares. He doesn't treat me any differently, and I doubt he knows. So it doesn't really make a difference, right?"
"Do you want him to know?" Elaine asked in return. "I mean, distant or not, you're sort of related now. Kind of."
"If he wanted to know, he'd find out. It's not like there are many Starks left, after all." Kae shrugged. "But I don't know. I might tell him. I might not. I seriously doubt he'll care."
"Probably," Elaine agreed. But it would be worth a shot she figured. She would let Kae do what she wanted, though.
Kae sighed, thinking over the ups and downs of telling him while she finished off her dinner and took dishes to sink. She'd do them tomorrow, though; she'd rather not worry about that now.
"What shall we start with? Our Kahlua-Baileys-rum-chocolate almond milk shakes?" |
"Sounds like a plan to me," Elaine replied with a bit of a grin. Kae always made the best spiked milkshakes.
"Excellent. Do you want to keep watching this, or shall we turn on a movie and do shots?" Of course, for them doing shots meant taking a gulp of the spiked milkshake until that was gone, and then doing rum and Coke. They didn't do well with pure alcohol.
"If we're doing a movie and shots, it has to be a cheesy movie," Elaine said. "None of these 'Labyrinth' shenanigans from before. I can't take a shot every time the camera focuses on David Bowie's crotch, after all." She grinned. "First six episodes of Sailor Moon?"
"Oh god that is fun." Kae grinned. "That works for me. Let me get these blending and I'll get the DVD set up."
Elaine nodded and settled back into her chair. She would have set up the DVD, but she had no idea how to tell one from the next, so she had to let Kae take care of it.
Kae got the ingredients mixed and started the blender before she went to go set up Sailor Moon. Because that was cheesy enough they both could enjoy it, and it didn't even need to be watched.
It only took her a few minutes to get everything ready, and then she brought over a tall glass for Elaine. "Your smoothie." |
"Thanks," Elaine said, taking the glass. She took a quick sip to determine how much space was left in the glass, and gave Kae a bit of a wry grin when she found it was almost to the brim. "You're expecting us to get smashed."
