"You don't believe me." It was plain on his face, and that hurt more than Rachel thought it would. "Do you see a crew around here? It's just us. We were adventuring together, just the two of us."
Hook shrugged. "They could be elsewhere," he said. "However, I don't normally go exploring with someone I don't know." Things just weren't adding up.
Rachel only just barely managed not to flinch.
"So you really don't remember me," she said quietly. "I promise you I'm telling the truth. It's just us here, and it's been months since you went to look for Rumplestiltskin. We've been back in our proper world for several weeks now." |
Normally, Hook wouldn't believe her. But he was inclined to believe her, for some reason. So he nodded once shortly.
"We're going back to the ship," he said. |
Rachel nodded a bit.
"Rowboat's down on the beach," she said quietly, gesturing back towards the shore. |
Hook nodded and started walking, heading down the mountain again easily and thinking things over. Because this was just really, really odd.
Rachel followed quietly, and just as quietly helped get the rowboat back into the water once they got to the shore.
Hook rowed back to the ship without a word, letting her get up first before he got up on deck and hoisted the rowboat back in. Then he had to pause for a moment when he realized he didn't have a choice but to trust her and her magic with moving his ship.
Rachel stepped onto the ship, still quiet, and stood by the rail.
"Where to?" she asked softly, looking at him. She figured it was obvious, now that they were on the ship, that there was no crew. |
"Back to my normal port," Hook said. "I presume you know where that is, since you say you've been here for a while."
"I'm going to assume it's the one not too far from the Queen's castle," Rachel said. "That's the one where we've been since we got back to this world."
Hook nodded. "That's the one," he agreed. He held onto the steering wheel tighter than normal. He did not like using magic on his ship.
Rachel watched him for a second before turning and raising the enchantment on the ship. Obediently, the sails and rigging responded the way she needed them to.
Hook actually shivered, making a face, but he didn't say anything. Instead he just steered the ship to where it needed to go.
Rachel saw the shiver and her heart sank. It honestly hurt her to see him so disgusted with her magic.
"We're five days out," she murmured to him, glancing over and then looking away. "As long as the wind is with us, we shouldn't take any longer than that to get back." |
Hook nodded. He knew how he worked, so he knew he'd have enough supplies to last. That, at least, he didn't have to worry about.
Rachel settled in stiffly, just focusing on the ship. Somehow, it seemed best to just stay out of the way. She didn't feel entirely welcome on the ship anymore, and it was starting to upset her.
Hook didn't exactly settle in either, keeping his eyes on everything.
It took him a little while to recognize the area, and then he started to relax a bit as they cruised in to port. |
Once they reached port and docked, Rachel released the enchantment on the ship. Then she disappeared into her room belowdecks. She had been gradually gathering up her things: she got the feeling she wasn't welcome on the ship anymore, and it was painful to stay and endure the chilly looks Hook was giving her.
Hook wasn't going to ask her to stay, not as he was now. He fully intended to round up a crew again and set off for a while.
Once her things were gathered up, Rachel went to find Hook.
"Are you sure you don't want me to hang around?" she asked cautiously. |
Hook shrugged. "Unless you particularly like sailing," he said. "I plan on finding my crew again. They should all be here."
"You haven't had a crew for a while," Rachel offered warily. "So they might be around, they might not." She was quiet for a moment. "You don't like me being on your ship, I can tell. So I'll go."
"It's more the magic than you, love," Hook said with a shrug. But he didn't tell her not to go.
Rachel couldn't quite suppress a flinch, even though she knew he habitually called women 'love.'
"I can't help that," she said. She was quiet for a moment. "I wish you would let me take a look and see what curse got you." |
