"Oh, it's not a problem," Belle assured her. "There was just a bit of miscommunication, that's all."
"Except no," Rachel said, coming around the corner. "Sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop... But I think Tina should have the job instead." |
Tina gave her a Look. "Rache, I can handle the job at the sheriff's station just fine. Sheriff Swan is nice enough, and I doubt it'll be exactly hard. Besides, you lov the library. More than I do."
Rachel ignored the Look.
"Tina, I know you better than that," she said. "Working here means less interaction with people. I know you don't like dealing with people. So I'll work at the sheriff station." |
Tina huffed. "Why must you be so stubborn?" she grumbled. "I can work at the station just fine. Besides, do you really want to deal with those people? I know you like books better."
"I'm not going to budge on this, Tina," Rachel said. "I'll work at the station, you can work here."
Tina sighed. "Fine," she grumbled. "If you're sure. But if you change your mind at any point..."
"I'll be fine," Rachel said. She glanced at Belle, who jumped a bit and nodded.
"Of course," she said. "I'd be glad to have you work with me Th--Tina." She only stumbled a little over the name, and turned a bit pink when she did. |
Tina smiled a bit and nodded, tactfully not commenting on the slip up. If it happened again she might tell Belle not to worry about it so much, but until then she didn't mind.
"Now that that's settled, I'm going to head over to the sheriff's office," Rachel said. "I'll let the sheriff know about the change in plans and everything."
Tina nodded. "Alright. Let me know, okay? And I'll see you later."
Rachel nodded.
"I will," she promised. Then she turned and left, heading to the sheriff station. |
A week passed and everything settled into a routine. Tina had lunch every day with Gold, which she provided, and Rachel continued working at the Sheriff's station.
Late one afternoon, though, Emma dragged Hook back to the station for public drunkenness, throwing him in a holding cell to stay overnight. "Let me know if he bothers you," Emma said to Rachel. |
"I'll let you know," Rachel promised, glancing at Hook before turning back to her work. She'd taken it upon herself to organize and digitize one of the filing cabinets.
Hook sat up slowly, looking at her before he grinned. "Well, well! I'd heard there was a pretty new attendant here but I had no idea it was you. How lucky I am."
"So says the one behind bars," Rachel commented as she kept working.
"Well, you know, this is nothing new. Just interesting." Hook smirked, only a little uncoordinated as he sat up. "At least the view is better here. And I hear you're working on getting your memories back?"
"If I were, I wouldn't tell you about it," Rachel replied. She glanced at him briefly and then back at her work.
"So how much do you remember?" Hook asked, watching her. "Do you remember Rumplestiltskin? You should."
"I'm not telling you what I remember," Rachel replied. "It's none of your business."
"And what is it you have against me? We never met before, so it can't be something from the other world." Hook tilted his head to the side and almost overbalanced. "Care to share?"
Rachel glanced at him and raised an eyebrow.
"You're drunk," she said. "Why don't you try to sleep it off some?" |
"'M not drunk. I never get drunk." Hook looked indignant.
"You almost tipped over," Rachel pointed out. "And you're in there to begin with because of public drunkenness."
Hook was quiet for a minute. "Will you tell me when I'm not drunk, then?"
Rachel looked at him again.
"I don't know," she said. "We'll see." |
