"Yes," Tina replied cautiously. "We've moved a few times. Why?"
"More than likely, you moved before anyone could realize that you and your friend are frozen in time," Gold replied. "I doubt you stayed in one place for more than a few years."
Tina paused for a moment, thinking that over, before she nodded slowly. "That... sounds about right," she offered cautiously.
"As I suspected," Gold said. "It was the curse. It was keeping you unaware and, for all intents and purposes, safe."
"Yeah, I don't want to know what people would have done if they figured out," Tina said, shivering briefly. Because that was a very scary thought.
"Luckily, you made it here without having to find out," Gold said. Now if only they could be so sure that the outside world wasn't going to stumble upon the town.
Tina nodded, staying quiet for a few moments before she grabbed one of the two extra blankets, handing it over to him before taking hers and using it as a pillow.
"Do you have any interest in exploring the rest of the world? Or are you content here?" |
"I do want to go out into the world," Gold replied as he accepted the blanket. "Once I'm reasonably sure I won't run the risk of being imprisoned or dissected. There is someone I want to find."
Tina nodded, leaving it at that for the moment.
"So can I ask now why people don't like you?" |
"You can ask," Gold replied, "but I still think you won't like the answer."
"So? Life is never all good." Tina shrugged. "Besides, I want to know what I'm getting into in case the town decides I'm somehow guilty by association."
Gold was quiet for a moment.
"When you read the... fairy tales, did you perhance make note of any deals struck, exchanges made, spells cast, that sort of thing?" he asked her finally. |
"Yeah," Tina said, looking over at him. "A lot of stories have some kind of deal in them." She paused, looking at him. "Which end were you on?"
"The beneficial end, typically," Gold replied. "Give me an example of what you came across."
"Well there's, what, two?, deals in the Little Mermaid. The Anderson version, not the Disney movie." Tina shrugged.
Gold just smirked a bit.
"Ah, I remember her," he said. "Sweet girl, really." And he was sure if he looked, he would find her voice in a jar somewhere (because really, what use would he have for a tongue?) and likely the hair from the girl's sisters. |
Tina paused to absorb that. And then she grinned.
"You know, you look great for a sea-witch. I never would have guessed." |
Gold couldn't help but chuckle a little.
"You shouldn't believe everything you read, dearie," he said. |
"Yeah, yeah, I know. But really I just couldn't help myself." Tina grinned. "So all the things in the shop. They're things people have traded to you over the years?"
"Most of it, yes," Gold replied. "The vast majority. Others are things I came across on my own." And very, very few were things that were given willingly.
Tina nodded, looking up at the stars for a few minutes.
"So was that your big announcement that you expected would have me running for the hills?" |
Gold shook his head a bit.
"I've given you some information, dear," he said. "But that particular piece is still a little too valuable to give away just yet." |
"Fair enough." Tina was quiet for a few moments. "I'm still not scared of you, you know."
"Perhaps you should be," Gold murmured. "However, you're entitled to your own opinion, I suppose."
"Damn straight I am. And you're not hitting of my bad guy reflexes." Tina grinned briefly and hefted the flashlight she'd been using. "After all, you haven't made me use this yet."
