New Adventures (A Pokemon Role Play)

A Role Play by April and NekoLen.

A world of adventure awaits!
Two siblings battling their way towards the goal of being the Kanto Champion!
Dreams will come true!

Mark blinked himself awake from the sleep he struggled to have. It had been nearly impossible for him to fall asleep, like a child before Christmas Day. Today was his birthday. Not only that, but it was also the day he could set out on his own Pokemon journey. He had grown up listening to his father's stories and watching TV shows. Now was his chance to realise his dream and become the Pokemon Champion. He rolled over in his bed and sighted the alarm clock. It was nearly 7am.

He grinned, climbing out of bed and silently walking towards the bag he had packed last night. He looked over the items inside, making sure he had what he needed. In just 2 hours, he and his twin sister would make their way to the Professor's lab and get a Pokemon of their own. He couldn't stop smiling as he went to his bedside table and found his glasses. He had studied Pokemon most of his life. He would hang around Route 1 and watch the Pokemon around there, writing notes about their behaviour. He would get in trouble for doing this, as most wild Pokemon liked to attack people, and he had no Pokemon of his own to protect him.

He quietly left his room and crept down the hallway towards his sister's room. He wanted to see if she was ready. They would be travelling together for the most part, so he had to make sure that she would be able to handle it. As he almost got to her door, he noticed his father's Vulpix asleep in the hall just outside his parent's room. He had to get past it to be able to go to his sister's room, but it was sleeping in such a way that he could accidentally awaken it. He held his breath and skirted around it, flat up against the wall. He reached the door to his sister's room and exhaled. That had been a close one. He slowly opened her door, glancing around the dark hall before stepping into the room. "Hey sis," he whispered.

Today's the day.

Dita sat in front of her dresser mirror, fidgeting impatiently with the braids of her hair. The day she had been waiting for since before she could remember was finally here. All those years saving money, asking Daddy to tell those awesome stories again, stealing glances at Mark's notes, making a few of her own, playing trainer with Vulpix and Ditto, watching Pokemon battles on TV with Mommy.. They were all in preparation for this.

She glanced left at her clock-- a happy Pikachu holding an open Pokeball, with the time displayed inside. 'How fitting,' the dark-haired girl mused. The electric, yellow mouse Pokemon represented her for sure. But which Pokemon will come out of the Pokeball? Her hazel eyes danced with the thought.

A slight yawn escaped the trainer-to-be's mouth and she looked at the clock again. It read 7:01am. She grumbled a bit, wondering why a minute felt like five. Not to mention how unusual it was for her to be on pins and needles.. But, heck, today was an exception.

Her train of thought was interrupted by a creak outside her lightly decorated purple door, and another smile graced her pretty face as she made her way to it.

"Shh, Mark!" she whispered, pulling her brother inside. It didn't really surprise her that he, too, was wide awake at this time. "What are you doing up way too early?"

Another smile showed she already knew the answer. They were twins after all.

NekoLen 02-08-2013 02:08 AM

"Are you mad?" he whispered back, glancing out the door before closing it. He knew that she was only asking out of habit. Of course his sister would know why he was still awake. He went over to her bed and sat on it, staring at her Pikachu clock. Only a few minutes had past, but it felt like an eternity.

"Dita, we are getting our own Pokemon," he said under his breath, as if repeating it out loud would make time go by faster. "We can finally catch our own!" He laid back and stared up at the ceiling, breathing heavily with excitement. He thought about all the Pokemon out there, waiting to be discovered and caught. It made his heart race with anticipation. He remembered the special programme they had watched about Professor Oak and the Pokemon he gave to newbies. He had fallen for the green dinosaur with a bulb on its back. He couldn't wait to have one of his own. "What are you going to chose? I want Bulbasaur!" He realised that his voice was getting louder, but he didn't care.

April 02-08-2013 07:53 PM

The 10-year-old merely raised her eyebrows at Mark's question. Did she look mad to him, what with this goofy smile on her face? She didn't think so. But she kept her mouth shut before she could say something to ruin their awesome mood. 'Mad, my foot.. she thought to herself anyway with a little snicker.

She watched her brother carefully as he made his way to her just-perfectly-made bed, puffing her cheeks out in semi-indignation when he decided to help himself and sit on it. Yes, she was a bit of a neat freak. Just a bit. Really.

The next thing that came out of his mouth caught her interest. Yes. Yes they were finally getting their first Pokemon. And, yes. Yes they were finally going to get to catch even more Pokemon of their own. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

"Charmander!" the excited Dita squealed out almost immediately after he asked, affected by Mark's own rising tone. Luckily she realized her mistake mid-word and clamped her hands over her mouth, causing the last two syllables of the Pokemon's name to be muffled. A similarly obstructed giggle followed.

"Okay, I've decided!" she then declared, removing her hands to reveal her trademark grin. She checked the clock one more time. This kind of riled-up behavior was usually her brother's gig, but, considering it's a super special occasion.. She didn't see the harm in following suit.

"It's seven-oh-seven. Mom and Dad know how important today is. They'll understand if we wake them up, right?"

NekoLen 02-08-2013 09:09 PM

Mark nodded, though he was usually the more cautious twin, today seemed like the perfect excuse to wake them early. He got up from her bed, making sure to drag himself off it. He knew how much his sister hated it when he messed her sheets up, so he always made sure to do so. Before she could say anything to him about it, Mark ran from the room.

His dad's Vulpix was awake now, watching them rush up the hall and into their parent's room. It yawned loudly and stretched, following them into the room. Mark jumped onto their parent's bed, causing them to start awake and then laugh when they saw who it was. Their mum was grinning as she sat up. "So we are ready for our presents, are we?" she asked. Of course she knew they were excited for something else, but she didn't want to think about that just yet. "They are in our closet."

April 02-08-2013 10:16 PM

".. Ah! Hey, come back here!" Edith screeched after her twerp of a brother. She started to run after him but double-backed just to fix the bed again. Yet another downside of being a neat-freak. And superstitious. Everything in her room had to be perfect before she left, or else it would spell disaster for her journey.

She arrived in her parents' bedroom just in time to hear them say 'presents' and 'closet', making a beeline straight for the latter instead of the bed. But immediately after sliding the glass-faced closet door open she leapt back in surprise.

"Kyah!" she yelped, effectively tripping over something behind her. Inside was Ditto, who had been diligently standing guard over the presents. The horror faded quickly from her face and she burst out laughing.

NekoLen 02-10-2013 09:51 PM

Mark laughed loudly at his sister's surprise. He came over by her and moved Ditto aside to take the presents out. Behind them, his parents were getting out of bed, their father going to the kitchen to get breakfast ready.

Mark threw Dita's present over at her, quickly opening his own. Inside was a black box. He slowly opened it, grinning at the gift inside. There was a brand new cell phone and also 5 Pokeballs. He showed it to his sister, knowing that she would probably get the same thing. He picked up one of the small, light capsules and pushed the button. It grew bigger in his hand and opened. Nothing came out, as it was empty, but it still made Mark excited and feel like a real Trainer.

April 02-11-2013 08:17 PM

Edith caught her present happily, tearing off the wrapping with great gusto. Inside she found a purple box containing the five empty Pokeballs she was expecting, seeing as Mark had them too. But what made her jaw drop was the fact that their parents actually got her the newest model phone she had been eyeing at the store. Technically called "C-Gear", these nifty new gadgets are a must-have for trainers. Not to mention they were packed with all kinds of awesome apps. Hers was, unsurprisingly, purple and that was as big a bonus as any.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" she squealed and all but tackled her Mother, pulling her twin brother along for the ride. "This is the best birthday ever!"

Breakfast was amazing as usual, and the rest of the morning went by pretty fast after that. Dita couldn't help the gigantic grin that stayed plastered on her face as she checked and double-checked, triple-checked and quadruple-checked her bag. She made darn sure Mark did the same. They both knew they weren't going to be back for a while.

"You ready?" she finally asked her twin. Her hazel eyes met his grey ones, deviating only briefly to check the nearest clock. It read quarter to nine. Fifteen minutes? That was plenty of time to get up the hill to Professor Oak's laboratory.

NekoLen 02-11-2013 09:45 PM

Mark made sure everything was packed. He had hardly eaten any of his breakfast, as he was far too excited to swallow anything. He had packed light, making sure to carry a spare change of clothes and any other stuff he might need for the journey. He knew that there were plenty of PokeCentres throughout Kanto, each one not only doubling as a Pokemon hospital, but also a sort of hostel for young trainers. All you needed was a Trainer Card... Mark quickly checked to see if he had his on him. He had sent away for one the other week. It came with a handy case that you would put your gym badges into. He stared at the empty slots, visualising them full of shining metal.

They left their home at quarter to nine, walking towards Professor Oak's laboratory. Their parents walked behind them, their dad holding their mum closely as she looked like she was about to cry. Mark had been to the lab a few times as a school excursion, but had never met the famous Professor for himself. He wished to be a Pokemon researcher and expert, just like Oak. That was his plan for after he became the Kanto Champion. He glanced over at Dita, wondering what she wanted her journey to be like. He hoped that they could travel together, as they were twins and did everything together. It would be weird to go on this journey alone.

They reached the lab at precisely nine o'clock. An aide of the Professor greeted them at the door, inviting them inside and leading them to a small study were Oak sat on a computer chair. Mark was trembling as the Professor himself smiled at them and greeted them.

"So I heard that you want to start your Pokemon journey?" the Professor said, his voice sounding warm and inviting. Mark nodded, glancing over at Dita. This was it. They were going to get a Pokemon of their own.

April 02-15-2013 03:39 PM

Dita was getting more and more nervous each step they took. So much so that she found herself clinging tighter to Mark's arm the closer they got to Professor Oak's laboratory. She surprised herself, really. She was only ever this antsy when she didn't know where Mark was. Like that one time they got separated at a festival a few towns away when they were younger. Boy, did she ever wail.

Her dream, more than just becoming a Kanto Champion, was to be able to explore all the regions of the Pokemon world and catch every Pokemon there is-- or was, for that matter. If she's lucky, she may even discover a new species. Basically, after conquering Kanto, she wanted to go to Johto. And after Johto comes Sinnoh, Unova and so on. Of course, it would take a while considering she only turned ten years old today. To reach her big dream she knew she had to start one small step at a time. But planning ahead was something she did best, and this kind of thinking was just her style.

She caught Mark looking her way. Were they thinking the same thing? Was he worried about their future? Where they would end up? Would they still stay together? There were so many questions swimming through her curious mind. The biggest of them all being..

"How much will things change for us after this?" she whispered without realizing. Her eyes darted over to Mark to check if he heard but, before she could find out, they were already being ushered in by one of the Professor's assistants.

Being face to face with the real Professor Oak was literally mind-blowing. He was her idol! The person both she and Mark greatly admired. Instinctively she reached out her hand.

"Good morning, Professor! I'm Dita and this is my brother Mark," she said, pointing to herself first and then pointing to her twin. Oak smiled and stood from his chair to shake her hand, turning to Mark next to extend him the same courtesy.

"Mark and Dita," he began after flashing another warm smile. "Your very own Pokemon legend is about to unfold! A world of dreams and adventures with Pokemon awaits."

A long pause followed as the older gentleman reminisced on his days as a young trainer. Dita met Mark's eyes and giggled a bit. She then cleared her throat politely, patting him on the shoulder.

"Um.. Professor, your eyes are twinkling.." she said, snapping him out of his surely pleasant reverie.

"Ah, hm, yes. As I was saying," the Professor continued sheepishly, leading the twins to a large table in the adjacent room. He then picked up one of the round, red and white spheres on top of it. "This, as I'm sure you already know, is a Pokeball. Inside one of the three Pokeballs on this table will be your very first partner."

Professor Oak looked over both trainers with deep thought, and then took out a rather large coin from his lab coat pocket. He played with the coin for only a second before shaking his head, and returned it with a knowing smile.

"Since there are two of you, and for the sake of fairness, I was going to have you choose heads or tails. But if I'm not mistaken you two children have already chosen. Mark, we'll start with you. Which Pokemon will you take with you on your journey?"

NekoLen 02-15-2013 08:49 PM

Mark was still pondering what he had heard his sister say. He had been just as afraid of the answer as she was. As the Professor offered him to pick first, he found himself shaking and blushing brightly. He had always adored Professor Oak's shows, and for him to be talking with him now was a dream come true. It was a shame that he was too embarrassed to say anything. He opened his mouth, his choice coming out squeakily. "Bulbasaur..." He glanced over at his parents.

"A good pick! Bulbasaur is easy to raise and very loyal," Oak spoke, going over to the table with the Pokeballs and handing it to Mark. Mark took it with trembling hands, holding the ball tightly as he imagined his very own Bulbasaur was now inside the ball. "It isn't a popular pick, I must say. But that means you are one of the first to train one!" Professor Oak smiled down at him, before turning to Dita.

"Which Pokemon partner do you want?" he asked her. Mark wasn't paying attention. He was itching to let Bulbasaur out of the ball, to meet it for the first time. But he had to wait until they left the Lab, as his parents had made them promise on their way there. It would be good for Bulbasaur to meet Dita and her partner Pokemon at the same time.

April 03-01-2013 09:26 PM

"Charmander, please!" Dita responded without hesitation, eyes already glued to the Pokeball holding the Fire-type lizard. She had made up her mind since first seeing the Pokemon in an old picture book the twins' parents used to read for them when they were younger. Further research on it only fanned her passionate flames even more. The last evolutionary stage of Charmander, after Charmeleon, was Charizard. A Fire and Flying Pokemon. With a Flying-type Pokemon she would have no problems exploring the world.

The Professor gently placed Charmander's Pokeball in the young trainer's hands. But, before letting go completely, he wanted to give her some much needed advice.

"Charmander, eh? A very daring pick, as these Pokemon are the hardest of the three starters to train," he said, squeezing her hands tightly for just a moment. He paused for dramatic effect, all the while seeing no change in the determined look on Dita's face. 'Good. Very good,' he thought before continuing, his now-vacant hands folded behind his back.

"Though the most mild-mannered of its evolution line and quite arguably very loyal I guarantee that, as Charmander grows, she -- yes, this one is female -- will become even more wild-tempered if not properly trained and cared for.

There are some who choose it anyway under the impression that it is stronger than Bulbasaur or Squirtle. However, while a Charmander can certainly grow to be a very powerful Pokémon, its strength in battle is very closely connected to its condition and health. Therefore, like a real flame, it must be tended to regularly and not strained or neglected. Most Trainers should not have a problem with this, though impatient ones who expect it to be very strong right off the bat will have severe difficulty raising this Pokémon ..."

Edith listened whole-heartedly as the Professor rambled on. It was about her Pokemon, so that made it worthwhile. She chanced a look over at Mark, who also appeared to be very interested. Oak's earlier, though notably shorter, tangent about Bulbasaur didn't deter him from sticking with his choice either. Why would it be any different for her?

"... So by choosing this particular creature you may well be, quite literally, playing with fire. Are you certain you're up for it?"

A more-than-ready "Yes." escaped her mouth as soon as the wise man finished speaking. He said a few more things before finally sending the duo out the door and onward with their journey.

As they took that first step away from the old-on-the-outside, new-on-the-inside laboratory, Dita took her brother's hand and flashed him her most brilliant smile yet.

"Our dreams start here, Mark!" she said, at last releasing the squeal she'd held pent up inside since they first walked in. With a gentle tug and a devious look in her eyes she let go of his hand, giving herself an early start down the steps of Oak's hill with a slow run. "Race you home!"

NekoLen 03-01-2013 11:19 PM

Mark watched her go, still grasping tightly to the Pokeball that contained his very own Bulbasaur. He knew that they were about to leave their hometown and start on their own journey. Part of him was very excited but the other knew that he would miss Pallet Town. As he was about to join his sister, the door to the lab opened behind him and Professor Oak came out, looking like he had forgotten something. "Wait! I forgot to give you these!" he called, making Mark double back and take the things he offered. Two handheld devices with cameras on the back.

"Those are Pokedexes! One for you and one for your sister, you see," the Professor said. "They are high-tech encyclopaedias! Once you meet a Pokemon, it will automatically update its pages. If you catch more Pokemon, more detailed pages will be completed!"

"Thank you, Professor!" Mark thanked him. Oak smiled and laughed, wishing him luck on his journey. Mark beamed and ran all the way home, meeting his sister there. He showed here the Pokedexes, giving her one. His hands were itching to open the Pokeball, so he pushed the button, releasing his new partner.

The Bulbasaur appeared in a flash of red light from the ball and sat on four legs, blinking his red eyes slowly. He looked up at Mark, croaking slightly, but looking just as excited as Mark was. "Hi, Bulbasaur. My name is Mark and I am your new Trainer. I hope we can grow stronger together," Mark introduced himself, bending over slightly to be on the Pokemon's level. He was shaking slightly as the Pokemon glanced up at him. Bulbasaur grinned at him and cried happily, jumping slightly. Mark laughed. It seemed that Bulbasaur was just as ready as he was. "I will call you Leaf," he said quietly, patting his partner's head. It felt scaly and cool, like dirt under a tree. Bulbasaur nodded, showing that he liked his name.

April 03-05-2013 08:31 PM

"Hey!" Dita huffed when Mark released his Bulbasaur without her. So much for doing it together! But then again he did bring the Pokedex to her so she supposed all was forgiven. That, and she was a sucker for her brother's sickly sweet, excited face.

"Alright then," she started, striking a pose made famous by a young trainer years before their time. The starry-eyed girl tossed her Pokeball in the air and listened happily as the long-awaited sound of her very first partner being released accompanied her voice. "Charmander, I choose you!"

The orange reptilian creature stretched out with a loud 'Chaaaaar!' before making its way to stand in front of Dita. They stared each other in the eyes for a good minute-- a bonding moment. She tentatively reached out a hand to pet the female Pokemon on the head but paused just before making contact, only to grow ecstatic when Charmander leaned in.

"You're very warm," the girl noted as she got down her knees. Now eye-level with the smaller being, she trailed her hand along her Pokemon's neck and down its back. Charmander's skin was smoother than she thought. It felt much like ultra-fine sandpaper as opposed to the coarse grit she assumed at first.

Her fingers stopped short of the flame at the tip of its tail. The noticeably hotter heat radiating from the point fascinated her, but for a second her confidence faltered. Many say a Fire-type Pokemon's flame will never burn the people it trusts. Does Charmander trust her right now?

A soft and reassuring chuff from the latter caught the 10-year-old's attention. Then, as if Charmander had read her mind, it slowly moved its flame through Dita's arm. She laughed in surprise, amazed and glad she didn't jerk away. It felt like she was being tickled by comfortably warm feathers. And with that, she fell in love.

"Can I call you Red?" she asked. Her reason for choosing that name was obvious, really. Red was the color of love, and it appeared Charmander loved it-- even going as far as making its tail-flame larger.

"Mark!" she half-yelled over to her twin to get his attention. "This is Red. Red, that's my twin brother, Mark."

Dita and Red moved closer for a meet and greet between new trainer and new Pokemon. Charmander and Bulbasaur, like the twins, were raised together at Professor Oak's Ranch since they were born. It was no surprise that they got along fantastically.

Before long the seemingly short morning turned into lunch time. Mark and Dita's parents by then had come out of the house bearing treats and other nice things for the new partners, turning their front garden into a picnic area. They spent the next hour and a half having fun and enjoying their last day home for a while.

But Dita was growing uncharacteristically impatient. She had been waiting to do a certain other something her entire conscious life. Not seeing any point in waiting longer, she got up to dust herself off and pointed her Pokeball right between Mark's eyes.

"What do you say, bro? Let's have a battle."

NekoLen 03-07-2013 11:25 PM

Mark enjoyed their little picnic together. Red and Leaf seemed to enjoy each other's company and played like old friends. Mark tried out many different foods on Leaf, trying to see which ones he preferred. Leaf seemed to love the berries that Mark had mixed into his onigiri. He made sure to make a mental note of this.

As they neared the time of their departure, Dita seemed to become rather agitated. Mark could sense that she really wanted to try something, and he could guess what it was. Of course, Dita would want their first battle to be against each other. Mark was afraid of losing to his sister and letting Leaf down. He hesitated at first but then with a glance to the excited gaze of his partner, he agreed.

"Leaf, let's show Dita and Red how strong we are!" he called, standing back a few paces to give them room. They stood opposite each other, their partners between them. "Dita, let's have fun! Our guys are only young and don't know many moves!" He took a deep breath and said his first command to his partner. "Leaf, use Tackle!"

Leaf croaked, taking aim and then rushing towards Red. Mark felt happy to see that his Bulbasaur followed instructions, but a bit disappointed at the speed of the plant reptile. He knew that Bulbasaur's true strength's lay in his special moves he would learn at higher levels. Such as Vine Whip and Solarbeam.

April 03-21-2013 01:44 PM

Dita was ecstatic when Mark agreed to battle her. So ecstatic, in fact, that she secretly swore never to use Red's advantageous Fire-type moves against Leaf unless it was absolutely necessary. Granted, Dita wasn't exactly sure if her Charmander knew any such moves yet considering how young she is.

"Alright, Red!" the trainer called out to her partner, consciously moving a few more paces away from where their parents were standing watch so they wouldn't get caught in the fray. "Let's face our opponents head-on with our own Tackle!

"Chaaaaaaaar!" roared the Pokemon excitedly, just as pumped up and ready for this battle as her human. She showed her acknowledgement by scratching at the ground, tail-fire flaring up, before running full speed ahead and colliding with her fellow starter. The impact sent both Pokemon flying back the way they came, causing Dita to wince. The scene reminded her of that time she and Mark crashed into each other on their bikes, only, that time they actually flew the direction they were headed: Forward and to the emergency room.

NekoLen 03-28-2013 09:20 PM

Mark laughed loudly. He was so happy to see the strength of both Pokemon, the readiness in which they were willing to battle and listen to their partner's commands. He grinned over at Leaf as the Bulbasaur picked itself up. "Are you all right, buddy?" he asked him, as Leaf nodded once and whipped around to face Red and Dita.

"Bulba!" Leaf croaked, sounding ready for another turn. Mark nodded as well and instructed him to use Tackle again, but this time to go slow and use his full force on impact. Leaf nodded and charged again.

April 04-23-2013 06:00 PM

The young female trainer's heart sank in gut-wrenching horror as she watched, unable to yell out a command to stop the unavoidable Tackle coming for Red. Her Pokemon was still recovering from that first collision and wouldn't be able to move out of the way. She shut her eyes quickly, imagining a hit-point bar above her Charmander's head that was slowly counting down the numbers until the fire lizard gets knocked out. That last attack only took it down by one-fifth, owing to the fact that both Pokemon were thrown back in recoil. But this one brought it to just under the halfway point, turning the color of her imaginary bar from green to yellow.

Dita nervously bit her lips. The silence that followed was too much to bear. Her now open eyes darted around for Red, thinking she'd been thrown back again. But she was surprised to find her partner standing rock-steady, holding on to Mark's just as surprised Bulbasaur.

A toothed grin spread to both trainer and Pokemon as their eyes locked.

"Sorry Mark," Dita called out, noticeably more confident in herself and especially more so in her amazing orange friend. She smirked in his direction, duly noting that he was, for once, quite speechless. "Looks like this is gonna be my win."

With a great big "Chaaaar!", the grass-type Leaf was lifted off the ground. Dita's triumphant gaze faltered a bit, knowing that surely Mark was now feeling the same as she was just moments ago. But this was still an official Pokemon battle between the twins. And, even if it was going too far-- which, really, it would never!-- she was certain their parents would step right in.

Using gravity in her favor, Red slammed Leaf into the ground.

NekoLen 05-04-2013 01:22 AM

Mark flinched as he saw his new partner thrown to the ground and called Dita off, rushing to Leaf's side in concern. "You alright, buddy?" he questioned, picking his Bulbasaur up and patting the dust off him. Leaf nodded and smiled, showing that he was ok. This made Mark sigh in relief. Standing up, he looked over at his sister and grinned. "That was fun! But next time... We will win!"

He returned Leaf to his Pokeball and looked over the town in the direction of Route 1. He glanced back at his mum and dad and then over to his sister. "You ready, Dita?" he questioned, feeling even more excited.

April 05-24-2013 11:19 PM

"Haha, okay. If you say so, Mark!" the twin sister replied just as enthusiastically. "Leaf was great. Both of you were, Red."

Dita called her beloved partner back to its Pokeball, but not before hearing a happy "Chaaaaar!" in response to her earlier praise.

Saying their goodbyes to their parents, as well as the small crowd of neighbors who had secretly gathered to watch their first Pokemon battle, the duo took their first steps as Pokemon Trainers onto the grassy terrain of Route 1.
