Background: His mother died in a car crash when he was eight, leaving him with just his father to care for him. His father was always accepting of the way Kurt was, encouraging to do the things that made him happy. It was no surprise to him when Kurt told him he was gay. He still loved him just as much. Kurt still faces daily bullying, but he does his best to show that it doesn't bother him, even though it does. Blaine stood hidden, he made sure of that. He had looked around, no one near to see him snooping on his high school's Glee club. he held on tight to the straps of his Cheerios bag, watching as the Glee club sung a song. He'd hum along to the song if he had only felt bold enough. |
Glee club started just like it did most everyday day; with Rachel taking the lead and talking over Mr. Schue as everyone else chatted idly amongst themselves. She was standing up front, wanting to discuss the songs she would be singing in the upcoming competition, wanting to make sure they picked the best songs that would showcase her voice. She didn't notice that no one was really paying attention to her. All that mattered was that Mr. Schue agreed.
Kurt was sitting in the back of the room, randomly flipping through the Internet on his phone. All the chatter in the room faded into background noise, something he could easily ignore. He wasn't really in the mood to talk to anyone. He hasn't been for the last couple weeks, to be honest. But he still loves going shopping with his girls whenever he gets the chance, there's no doubt about that. But he only went out when invited. It really started about two weeks ago when the bullying had increased. His main tormentor was Karofsky, who came after him a lot more than any of the other bullies. Honestly, he was starting to be the only one and Kurt was starting to be really afraid of what was going to happen if the guy was pushed too far. So he made sure to keep his head down and avoid him as much as possible. He felt a poke in his side and he turned to look at Brittany, who had the same dazed look on her face. "Yeah?" he asked, wondering what random thought she was going to say to him now. "Can you come by sometime this week to talk to Lord Tubbington? He started smoking again and he won't listen to me when I tell him he needs to quit." she asked, reaching up to scratch behind her ear. This is the third time this month and she was worried about his health. A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as Kurt nodded once. "Sure boo. It's no problem." He and Brittany have gotten a lot closer since their week of dating last year and he was one of the few who she felt like she can go to with these problems without feeling like she's being judged. They simultaneously turned towards the front of the room when music started up and it didn't take long for the whole club to get up and join in on the song. Everyone was laughing and having a good time, but no one really lingered when they were dismissed, everyone taking off in different directions. Kurt headed off to leave through the gym since the exit there was the closest to where he parked his car and knowing that there wouldn't be any jocks still hanging around at this time. He slowed as he approached, hearing someone inside singing. He cautiously opened the door, quickly scanning the room. He wanted to call out, but he wanted to see who it was first. He closed the door quietly behind him and crept closer, looking around until he spotted who it was doing the singing. He paused when he saw it was Blaine, surprised that he had an amazing voice. Why hadn't he joined Glee or even thought about it? Rachel would have said something for sure if he had. Kurt wanted to confront him, but he didn't want to make the other feel uncomfortable. He decided to just wait til Blaine was done and leave then. In the meantime, he could wait quietly and just listen. |
When Blaine had finished the song, he had moved on to just one more. Once more couldn't possibly hurt anything, right? Blaine asked himself as he went into singing David Bowie's Hero. And when he was done with that, he sighed and looked at the ground, his elbows on his knees as he had his hands folded together. It was that one song that had led him to realize how lonely he just was.
He wanted a boyfriend. But not many students knew that he was, well, gay. And that was the problem. And no one else, except for that Hummel boy from the school's Glee Club and his French class, was openly gay. So that was the big problem. He didn't think anyone else was gay. He felt so disappointed with his situation. But just then, his phone went off. He picked it up to see it was Santana. What does she want now? But he chose to ignore her. Just this once. He wanted to be left alone, he wanted time to himself, away from his annoying sister, Santana's rants about whatever, and anyone else that judged him constantly. But just then, he got an odd, eerie feeling as if someone was watching him. The lights didn't help him at all as he got to his feet and turned his head around, searching the gym for anyone. "Hello?" he found himself calling out, his confused voice echoing off of the walls almost too perfectly. This is it, he told himself. Someone caught you. Just as Santana had warned you. |
Kurt was just about to move forward when the song ended, wanting to leave the building now that the performance is over. He only got a few steps forward when the next song started and he quickly backtracked to stay out of sight while he listened. Blaine had a beautiful voice that was hard not to listen to and enjoy.
Everything about Blaine seemed to be wonderful. His energy. His looks. His personality to just everybody. He could now add his voice to the wonders of Blaine Anderberry. But there was something about him, something he was hiding from everybody and Kurt wanted to find out what it was. They weren't that close though, despite how much he wished otherwise. Blaine was they type of person everyone wanted to be friends with, but he was afraid. He was afraid that Blaine would end up being like everyone else in this school, other than the Glee club, who will shun and shy away from him when they get to close. It didn't matter that he and Rachel were somewhat friends and he was over at her house on occasion. They two boys never really talked before and he didn't think he'd ever really get the chance. Honestly, he'd probably freeze up and end up making like a complete fool of himself if they do. When the second song ended, Kurt decided to just leave through a different door to avoid any confrontation. He knew it might get awkward real fast if that happened, so he started towards the door that he came in through. He froze completely though when Blaine called out. Crap! This was not good. He quickly retreated to the shadows, hoping he wouldn't be seen. If he went through the door now, it'd be to obvious that he's here. |
When no response was sounded, Blaine felt disappointed. Disappointed? He guessed that he actually wanted someone, just someone, maybe even a stranger, to have caught him. He felt so locked up with all his secrets anymore. His depressed state came back to him for the first time in a few weeks.
Another boring day, another pointless, boring day, he grumbled inside his head. He reached over and grabbed his bag, throwing it on his shoulders. He left the gym through the main doors, entering through the dimly-lit hallways. Not all the the lights were on anymore being that it was after school. He checked his phone, seeing a texting from Santana and the time. It was already five? What if someone was watching me? he wondered to himself. Maybe... He hurried over to lean against the wall, waiting to catch whoever it was that was spying on him. He was sure that someone had been spying on him. He took the time waiting to read Santana's text. Sent: 4:45 AM Why didn't you answer my call? I need to talk to you about my Abuela. Kurt grumbled, feeling suddenly like a crappy friend as he texted back and lied stupidly: Sent: 5:05 AM I'm sorry, I was in the bathroom. I can't talk on the phone right now. I'll call you when I get home, ok? Kurt waited. |
Kurt held his breath until the doors closed behind Blaine and he breathed a sigh of relief, his body sagging in relief. There was a part of him that was disappointed that he wasn't caught, but the larger part of him was glad. This was for the best really. There would be no awkward conversations that would surely come and he wouldn't embarrass himself.
He waited a few more minutes before taking off across the gym to exit through the side doors that let out straight into the parking lot. There was no way he was risking going through the main doors and have the possibility of Blaine still hanging around. He unlocked his Navigator and hopped in, tossing his bag into the passenger seat and taking off. He pulled into his driveway and hurried into the empty house. He headed straight upstairs to get started on his homework before he would have to start dinner. His father would be home around 7, so he needed to have something done by then. He pulled out his math and only got through a couple of problems before his mind faded off. He felt horrible about just leaving Blaine like that. Should he have said something earlier? Now that he was away, he felt like he should have. Guilt churned in his stomach and he decided to talk to the other about it tomorrow, even if it was just to appease his guilt. Plus, it would give him a chance to finally talk to him. With that thought in mind, he was able to concentrate better on his homework. |
When no one came out of the gym, Blaine immediately told himself that it was all just his imagination, that his sleep depravity had left him with hallucinations and crazy thoughts. He shook his head, feeling his phone quickly vibrate twice. Santana had finally replied.
Sent: 5:10 AM Whatevz. Knowing Santana, that was her way of telling him that he had better call her like he said he would. So he headed for the exit, finding his little black car, getting into it, tossing his bag in the back, and remembered he had homework. He took a moment to think about it. He had missed a lot of his past homework assignments. Maybe he should have grabbed his books. No, he told himself. He was too tired and exhausted from school and Cheerios practice to go through with that. Another day wouldn't hurt. I hope. So he put his key in the ignition and headed straight for home. When he had made it home, had grabbed his bag and got out after parking in the garage, locking his car just for safety measures as he entered the threshold, tossing his keys onto the nearest coffee table where everyone else tossed their keys. "I'm home!" he announced, wondering if Rachel or one of their dads were home. Staying true to his word, he brought out his phone and dialed Santana's number from heart. She answered on the second ring. Desperate much? "I'm telling my Abuela tonight about me being gay," Santana immediately said, not even bothering with her usual, "What the hell took you so long, did you drown in your gay gel or something?" "That's good," Blaine encouraged, his triangular eyebrows rose. This was sudden of her. He knew that her Abuela meant a lot to her and that this would be a huge step to take. "I hope the best for you, Santana," Blaine said earnestly. Blaine practically heard her smile through the phone. "Thanks, bowties," she murmured. That was her nickname for Blaine whenever the two got friendly or sentimental with one another. "Keep me posted?" "Will do." Blaine hung up his phone when he heard that Santana had hung up, sighing. |
Luckily for Blaine, Rachel was out with Finn at the time, but it wasn't long before she came back. She skipped happily into the house, more than a little pleased with herself. She had a great feeling in her gut that they were going to sail through sectionals, and things were going great with Finn. She started towards the kitchen, but paused when she spotted Blaine's keys. She redirected herself to head upstairs to see him. She knocked on his door, not wanting to intrude if he was busy.
Kurt got through most of his homework before six, which meant he'd have to face an hour of boredom before his dad got home. Normally he would have gone out with Mercedes and Tina, maybe even Brittany, but he hadn't been feeling it today. He felt bad about ignoring his friends though, so he decided to make plans with them this weekend. He packed up his bag before heading downstairs, flipping on the tv to one of his shows before turning to his attention to his phone. Sent to Tina; Brittany; Mercedes: 6:10 PM You up for shopping this weekend Received from Tina: 6:12 Sure! Sounds fun. We'll talk more about it tomorrow during our study period. :) Received from Brittany: 6:15 I don't know. Depends on if Santana wants to do something. If not, then we could. Kurt sent out confirmations before heading into the kitchen, deciding to get starting on dinner. He was going to make just a simply chicken parmesan meal for them. Nothing to complicated. |
Blaine had hurried up to his room to change out of his Cheerios uniform. So he found some old sweats and a tee shirt, changing into that with slightly messed-up hair. He honestly didn't care at the moment. What he cared about was that he was home. Looking around at his neat, organized room, he turned his iPod dock on, and put some soft Frank Sinatra in the background as he plopped down on his bed, going to his laptop that sat at the edge of the food of his bed. He reached for it just as he heard the knock at his door.
"Come in," he said. When he saw that it was his sister, he sat up straight, his eyes aware. She rarely came into his room. "Rachel," he murmured, blinking. "What's up, sis?" he asked. Their dads weren't home yet, leaving the house to him and Rachel. He always liked to spend time with Rachel...when she wasn't talking about Finn, Glee, or Barbra. |
Rachel hesitated before entering Blaine's room. She didn't like coming in here since it was his room and that was his space to be himself, just like she had her room where she liked being alone and doing her own thing without feeling self-conscious about anything. But she was here to check up on him and be a good sister. So she smoothed down her kitty sweater and walked confidently.
She smiled brightly as she perched herself on the edge of his bed. "I just wanted to see how you were doing. I don't get to see you much since you joined the Cheerios." she said shrugging lightly. She resisted the urge to look around the room and make comments about how he can improve the room. It was his room and he could do whatever he wanted to it. |
Blaine smiled softly to his sister. He liked her when she was this way. "It's like death," he grumbled with a rather overdramatic roll of his eyes. He sighed and shook his head, shrugging. "It's okay," he said in a more serious tone. "Nothing exciting, nothing boring -- the usual."
Coach Sylvester was always a hassle to be around. She yelled too much. You'd think she'd lose her voice every now and then, but she never did. It was those stupid protein shakes, probably. But the way she pushed everyone was always the main thing that drove Blaine towards wanting to quit. Only probably was that he was co-captain... He worked hard for the position. No ways was he going to throw it away just like that... "How's Glee club?" he found himself asking before he really through about it. He was actually curious. He wanted to know how the club was doing, how Regionals (he thinks they're on Regionals -- he should know since he has to go to all of their performances like a good brother). |
Rachel smiled sympathetically. She's peeked in on a few of the Cheerios practices, and just knowing Coach Sylvester added to all that had to be brutal. She wanted nothing more than to march up that vile woman and demand that she go a little easier on her brother. But she knew that wouldn't end well for Blaine, and she valued her life. So she restrained herself.
At the mention of Glee club though, she perked right up and large smile spread across her face. "Oh! It's great! Sectionals are coming up soon and with me leading with an amazing Barbra song and Finn and I taking the duet, I'm more than confident that we can win." she said, excited. She knew she'd get the solo. She just had to wait for Mr. Schue to give it to her officially. Her smile faded some and she eyed him curiously. "You know..." she started, but paused to think through what she wanted to say. And, of course, to build dramatic effect. "You should join Glee club. It's a lot of fun and you have an amazing voice. We could benefit by adding your voice to the group." |
Blaine knew exactly where Rachel was going when she started with 'you know...' It made him groan on the inside and mentally role his eyes, but he just tilted his head to the side and gave his sister a guilty, small smile. She did no harm in the thought. "I bet it is fun," he told her as he shifted on his bed, crossing his legs so he was now sitting Indian-style.
He rested his hands on his knees, sighing as he shrugged, his eyes going down to the pattern in his comforter and back up to his sister. "But I choose Sue Sylvester over a slushy facial any day," he told her, an apology visible in his voice. His eyes said different, like envy. "I hope you guys win at Sectionals. I know you'll knock everyone's socks off," he told her. He longed to be apart of something as fun as Glee club. He knew it was fun. But he just didn't want to face getting bullied for choosing sides... And then his mind to that Hummel guy... |
Rachel fought off the urge to frown. This wasn't the first time she's brought up joining the club with him, and the conversations always end the same way, but she knew Blaine would have fun in the group. And she wasn't lying when she said it was fun. He needed something fun in his day to get rid of the thought of Cheerios meetings.
"Just because you join, you won't get slushied. Trust me when I say that only idiots who slushy someone who was wearing the uniform. They'd have to face Coach Sylvester's wrath." she said, leaning forward some to help get her point across. "Look at Santana, Quinn and Brittany. None of them get slushied cause no one would dare to." She sighed lightly, scooting closer to him, her face turning serious. Well, more serious than she was before. "Look. You know I'm not going to force you to join. But I know that you're lonely. You're not too close to the girls in the Cheerios and you only have a handful of friends. And who knows! Maybe you and Kurt could be friends. I know you'd be happier to have someone who was gay to talk to who wasn't one of our dads." |
Blaine took his sister's words into deep consideration. He knew well she had a big point. People liked him at McKinley. People never threatened him or dared to give him a hard time. He was Co-Captain of the Cheerios and damn sick of being bored and lonely. But he couldn't help but snicker at the 'Kurt' part of her point.
"Kurt and probably no one else in that club knows I'm gay. It's just you, our dads, Santana, and Brittney," Blaine grumbled unhappily. "I have a feeling that once your Glee club knows I'm gay, everyone else will. What if they bully me for it?" he asked, a very worried expression on his face as he gave his sister his famous worried puppy dog face. He was quiet for a while before he chose to speak again. "Besides. Kurt probably won't like me." He crossed his arms over his chest for a moment, then turned over to his stomach as he cupped his hands together and rested his chin on them, looking up at his sister. "I'd have to audition...won't I...Rach, you know I'm nervous when performing in front of people..." His face got red at the thought. He was such a baby. He knew it. |
Rachel frowned slightly before she wiped the look from her face. She needed to stay positive and chipper, while still retaining her seriousness to make her point. But the thought of Blaine being bullied like she is, or like anyone else in Glee club, was an upsetting thought. She didn't want him to have to go through that.
"Look, can assure you that if you choose to tell the group that you're gay, no one would spread it around the school. That's the great thing about the club. We keep each others secrets inside the group. And if it does get out, no one will bully you. We wont' let it and I know that no one would try as long as you're on the Cheerios." She smiled reassuringly at him as she shifted to lay next to him. "I promise Kurt would like you. You're a great guy who isn't a jerk to everyone they pass." she said, nudging him gently with her shoulder. She smiled for a second before turning serious again. "I know you get nervous. I just don't understand how since you perform with the squad all the time. All you'd have to do is pretend you're doing something for that and it shouldn't be a problem. I'll even help you pick out a song if you want." |
Blaine was silent for a moment, letting his sister's words sink into him as he made decisions within his mind. He pulled his knees up to his chest, hugging them close as he chewed on his inner cheek, his brown eyes looking to the carpet of his room for a moment before they returned back to his sister.
"I'll think about it," he decided. "It's still early in the year, right? And...I don't know. I'll just have to think about it. I should talk it over with Santana," he murmured. His sister had a point -- he'd be accepted easily, he knew that. But that didn't change him worrying about what they'd think about him. Or worse, what the whole school would think about him. "I mean, if we could...pick a few songs and kinda practice them...choose one of them for my audition...I could have decided by then if I wanted to go through with it or not." He shrugged, blinking at his sister with a tired face. He sighed and got to his feet, stretching a little as he felt somewhat sore from cheer practice today. Just then, his phone rang. He reached over and grabbed his phone, seeing that it was Santana was calling. This couldn't be good. He pressed 'Answer' and all he heard was Satana crying. "Rachel, I have to talk to Santana. I'll talk to you later, alright? I'll be down late for dinner," Blaine said before he turned back to his phone. "Santana?" His voice was soft, warm, and highly concerned. //Sorry the reply took so long. The craziness never ends between Prom and Graduation. |
Rachel, for once, was waiting quietly, watching her brother as he thought through what he said. She wanted to help him get to the decision to actually wanting to join the glee club, but she knew the more she'd end up pushing him away. It was driving her crazy though to keep her mouth shut. This was to important to her.
She smiled brightly at his answer though and she jumped up, clapping her hands excitedly. "Yeah! It's still early and you have time to join!" She held off on hugging him tightly, knowing it wouldn't be appreciated right now. "I'll go through my music right now and pick out a couple good ones and we'll practice whenever you want." She almost skipped from the room when dismissed, her mind racing with possible song choices. There were so many they could do! And she knew Blaine didn't want to be bullied because of joining, but it won't be for long. She can feel it, deep in her gut that they were going to get to Nationals this year. Having Blaine join will help boost those chances so that there was no way they could lose. //It's fine. People get busy and on the bright side, it's almost over! |
The next day was nothing but simply boring to Blaine. He struggled to get out of bed, rubbed his eyes until he was awake, ate his breakfast, drove to school, adjusted his crisp, dry cleaned Cheerios uniform, and headed to his first period class -- French 4. He hated that class. And he was well aware that his grades showed it.
He sat down at his usual place next to Santana, whose eyes were still red and puffy from last night's disaster. Blaine leaned over to her, resting a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Any word from your Abuela?" he asked. Santana just looked over at him and shook her head, her face cringing up again as more tears came out. Blaine felt guilt for bringing it up, but he was just a concerned best friend. He was just about to get up and hug her when the teacher entered the classroom. The class was given a silent in-class assignment, researching new vocabulary words that would be on the text next Friday. While Blaine opened his book and took out his notebook, the teacher walked over to him, showing him his current grade in the class with a disapproving look. "You need a tutor if you want to pass and graduate next year," she told him. It made Blaine want to curl up into himself. When the teacher allowed the class to talk amongst themselves, Blaine looked around the room, searching for a friendly face to ask for help for tutoring. And then there was Kurt Hummel, right behind him. He turned around in his seat, placing his folded hands together on the desk as he gave Kurt a small smile. "Hi," he started out with. Nice and easy should be the best way, thought Blaine. |
Kurt woke up at his same time as he always does, five o'clock on the dot. His hand shot off and switched off his alarm before it really had the chance to get going. He groaned, laying there for a few seconds longer before dragging himself out of bed. He dragged his half-asleep self to the shower, which was long enough to wake him up and get himself clean. He wrapped a robe around himself when he was done so that he could get through his moisturizing routine, while he goes through his daily plan.
He was feeling pretty good about himself, and he made sure he had the perfect outfit. He needed to look good so that he'd be able confront Blaine about what happened yesterday. He knew that if he didn't look his best, he'd end up chickening out. He hurried out of his room to grab a quick cup of coffee before heading out to his Navigator. Nerves were eating at his stomach when he pulled into the parking lot. He wanted nothing more than to just avoid Blaine, and he had luck with that... Until he reached his first period, where he forgot he had it with the other boy. He kept his eyes on his work, hoping to get his work done quickly and quietly without interacting with anybody. Well, he was worried about Santana, but it wasn't really his place to ask her what was wrong. He'd leave that to Brittany. He was almost halfway through his work when he heard Blaine speak and it took him a moment. He took a quick glance to see if there was someone else behind him that Blaine could be talking to. When he saw no one, he turned back to the other. "Hi..." he said hesitantly, still unsure if he was the one actually being spoken to. //Sorry it's taking so long. I start to answer, then I end up getting distracted and forget what I was doing. I guess that's what happens when you have Tumblr open in another tab ^^" |
Blaine suddenly felt awkward. Oh God, what if he thinks I'm being weird or something? Blaine asked himself. He cringed at the thought, but kept looking at Kurt. To retaliate his thoughts, he looked around the room of chatting students. When he knew he was ready, he looked back to Kurt, leaning in softly.
"I...I was wondering....if you'd tutor me..." He licked his lips and chewed on his inner cheek before he spoke more. "I need to pass this class...Kurt," he murmured, giving Kurt his naturally puppy-dog, pleading face. His eyes slightly widened a little, his triangular eyebrows arching up slightly together, tilting his head to the side just a little. "It would mean a lot if you could," he soon added, unsure if it would be too much as to make himself sound just a tad bit desperate, or if it was just another step forward to getting Kurt to help him out. //It's totally cool! I understand how that happens when Tumblr's open in another tab. [lol] Also, sorry for the shortness of this reply, I didn't know what else to write, honestly. |
Kurt could feel a frown tugging at the corner of his mouth. He kept his face in a neutral position though as he took a glance around the room. Everyone seemed to be absorbed in their own conversations, not giving them a second glance. Out of all the people in the room though, why was Blaine asking him. And why was he acting like he didn't want to be seen talking to him.
Of course! He was embarrassed to be seen talking to the gay kid. That was why he was being all quiet and secretive. Kurt couldn't believe he had actually thought Blaine was different from the other guys in the school. An uncomfortable feeling twisted in his stomach at the thought, but he quickly pushed it down. It wouldn't do him any good to think about it now. There would be plenty of time for that later. For now though, he had to keep a disinterested air about him to let Blaine know he wasn't falling for his tricks. "Why me?" he asked, resisting the urge to cross his arms. "There are plenty of other people in here that would love to help you if you asked them." //It's fine! I hope you can forgive me for mine! I would have replied sooner, but my Internet went down for awhile, and when it came back on, it took while before I wanted to get back on |
Blaine smirked. He somehow knew Kurt would say that, but he just shook his head and shrugged, looking away and then back at Kurt, staring into those beautiful blue eyes (dear god, I never got Kurt's eye color right, I'm sorry if it's not blue!). "You're the only one I trust. And besides," he tilted his head, giving a small smirk, "you're the best in this class. So why not you?" he challenged.
It was then that he remembered what his sister said about Glee club. Should he mention it or should he not...he immediately pushed that thought from his mind and cleared his throat, focusing his eyes back on Kurt once more. "Think about it. I'll be in the library after school," Blaine said as the bell rang. He got his books together and got up, throwing his Alexander McQueen messenger bag onto his shoulder and walking out the door to head to his next class. Santana caught up to him, quiet, but still looking as radiant as she did every other day. Blaine couldn't help but turn his head to look back at Kurt as he left the room, but turned it back around when his sister had caught his eye. |
