Amy watched her sister as Lea spoke.
"You're not telling me everything," she said after a moment. "What happened?" |
Lea hesitated a few moments before she started going through the things she'd pilfered from the labs.
"I was up in Stark's main lab showing him how I got through his firewalls," she said quietly. "He figured out we're Extremis experiments." |
Amy was quiet.
"What now?" she asked. She didn't want to have to move again, but it seemed like it might be inevitable. |
"He figured it out. But he didn't seem freaked. And he didn't call the cops or anyone. I think we're okay. For the moment. As long as I continue to be useful." Lea kept working on her invention.
"Please be careful," Amy said. "We don't know what he might do now." She bit her lip a little. They both knew exactly how to keep Stark under control, but it would be a very delicate task, and from what Amy had heard about him, he might end up being too strong-willed for her to control.
"If we hear anyone coming up to the apartment, we can hop out the fire escape," Lea pointed out. "Stark said that if he wanted me incarcerated or sued, I wouldn't have made it out of the apartment, so we just have to listen more carefully." She was quiet for a moment. "But I get the feeling we're okay. He's too curious."
"If anyone tried to take you, they'd regret it," Amy vowed viciously. "I'd make sure of it."
Lea smiled. "Thanks," she said quietly. "Hopefully it won't come to that." She put a few more pieces together before she hooked it up to her computer and started writing code.
Amy moved over a bit on the couch, giving her sister a bit more room to work. After a few minutes, though, she reluctantly got up to make herself some more tea.
Lea kept up writing code until she had a working code, which took a little while.
"Here," she said, sounding distracted. "Try this. Just kind of slide it on like a headband for the moment." |
Cautiously, Amy took it and slid it on. Almost immediately, she yelped and tore it off again. It had sounded like a loud screech in her brain, like glass being scratched, and it almost physically hurt.
"No good, I take it." Lea frowned as she started typing again. "What part of it? Was it too loud, too tight, too buzzy?"
"It screeched," Amy said. "Like audio feedback, but sharper, and in my brain."
"Okay, that means it is working, just not how I wanted." Lea typed furiously for almost half an hour. "Try now. That should be better."
Gingerly, Amy tried it on. It didn't screech, this time; it buzzed in the back of her mind, although it felt like there was a sort of pressure blanketing her brain. It wasn't painful, but it made her feel fuzzy and a bit disoriented. She took the metal band off again and shook her head.
"No," she said. "It makes me feel drugged and makes my head feel like it's full of cotton." |
Lea grumbled. "I wanted low-level sensations," she grumbled at her computer as she typed in code. "Barely noticeable. Not feeling like she's drugged. Stupid thing. If you don't work with me here I'm going to start from scratch."
Amy couldn't help but smile a bit as her sister grumbled at the computer. It was a familiar scenario, an it was kind of normal and comforting.
Lea kept grumbling until she wrestled the code into submission, and then she grinned.
"Try it now. If it doesn't do what I want this time I'm scrapping it and starting over." |
Amy put the band on again, bracing herself just a bit for unpleasant sensations. She was a big surprised to find that all she felt was a faint buzzing in the back of her mind and nothing else. She looked at her sister and nodded and bit.
"I think it's okay," she said. "I don't feel anything bad." She wasn't sure if it would work on her urges to co trip people, but that would have to be tested later. |
"Good. The idea is the buzzing interferes a bit with the new programming they put in that dose you got, so you should be able to ignore the feeling more easily. Or, best case, you don't get the impulses at all." Lea shrugged. "You'll have to test it tomorrow."
"So it works like a jamming signal for the programming," Amy said. If it worked, it would be wonderful. "I'll test it at work tomorrow."
"And if it doesn't work, I can make it work. Unfortunately I think you'll have to live with the low-grade buzzing for the moment. I'll work on that after I know everything else works." Lea shrugged, stretching out before putting her computer away again.
Amy nodded. Already, it was more than she had hoped for. Leaning over, she hugged her sister.
"Thanks," she said softly. |
"No problem," Lea said, returning the hug. "I'm glad I could figure it out."
"I'm glad too," Amy said. "Hopefully this will make thing easier for both of us."
