"I didn't tell you anything," Leandra pointed out. "You guessed and I didn't disagree." She sighed as she stopped on the sidewalk. "Alright, I can take her from here."
"Same difference," Tony said, shrugging a bit. "You sure you want to take her? You looked like your arm was bothering you."
"I'll manage." Not that Lea was paranoid, but she didn't really want to take Tony back to the apartment, especially not dressed in his armor as he still was.
That way she could hang onto the mistaken idea that Tony didn't know where she lived for a little while longer. |
"Whatever, your call," Tony said. He gave Lea her sister. "Now I need to go and see about fixing all the damage you did to my systems." Although he was still grudgingly impressed with it.
"Hey, it got your attention." Lea shrugged carefully, managing to hold Amy and her laptop without hurting herself. "Besides, most of it is superficial, just to the firewalls."
"The firewalls are in ruins," Tony replied. "Completely destroyed. Those were works of art, you know, and they've been demolished."
"Well then, I guess you need to upgrade them from art to artful tanks." Lea still managed to grin. "I'll see you on Monday."
Tony just sputtered a bit as she walked away, and finally turned and took back off towards the tower. He had repairs to make and systems to rebuild.
Lea made it back to their apartment with Amy and set her on a bed to wake up and recover fully. She didn't sleep any herself until Amy woke up, too worried to sleep. They'd have to move again, probably out of state.
Amy groaned and woke up several hours later. She burrowed deeper into the bed, trying to ease her pounding headache and whimpering a bit.
"Hey, easy," Lea said, moving over to look at her and check her over. "Easy. You're okay."
"It hurts," Amy mumbled into the pillow. "'S throbbing so much..."
"I know." Lea brought over some water and painkillers. "Sit up a bit and you can take these. It'll help."
Amy barely looked up as she swallowed the painkillers and sipped some water, and then she burrowed herself back into the bed. Her head hurt too much to even think, let alone anything else.
Lea left her alone after that, making sure all the lights were off as she settled in to, once again, look for apartments for them and look for job listings in some other city.
Amy slept through right to the next morning. She woke up in the middle of the morning, blinking and looking around. At least she was home, that was something.
Leandra was still awake, and she looked over at Amy with a wan smile. "Morning," she greeted quietly. "I've got a few options for us, depending where we want to move."
"Morning," Amy said, stretching a bit and getting up. Going over, she gently took the laptop from her sister. "You look like you've been up all night. Get some sleep, I'll keep an eye out until you've had some rest. We can discuss moving when you get up."
Lea shook her head. "I can't sleep," she said quietly. "Not now. I don't feel safe here anymore." She got up and went to go make some coffee though.
"You need some sleep," Amy said, intercepting her sister. "Try to rest. I'll keep a lookout for a while."
Lea hesitated for a few moments before she sighed and gave in, going to lay down for a little while. She could at least rest if not actually sleep.
Amy made sure her sister was at least resting before going around the apartment and making sure everything was in order. Then she turned on the TV quietly and settled in to keep watch.
Leandra got up after a few hours, moving over to make herself some coffee.
"So where do we want to move this time?" she asked, her voice quiet. "I found a few big cities that should be fine." |
"That's what we thought about this city," Amy pointed out quietly after a moment. "We thought the big city would hide us, and we were found faster than ever."
"Maybe if we look for a more medium-sized town, then. Somewhere we wouldn't normally go." Lea grimaced. "And I won't take a tech job this time."
