"Yeah. Good plan." Dean shrugged and got to his feet. "Come on, let's go get something to eat, I have no idea when Sam is going to come out and I don't feel like waiting for him."
Runa nodded.
"Sure," she said. She made sure she had her phone and wallet, and then headed for the door. |
Dean took his time finding a place to eat, and then actually eating. So it was getting decently late by the time they headed back to the room.
Runa was more than ready to settle in to sleep when they got back to the room. She glanced at Cas, not sure if he was going to hang around or leave, but she didn't bring it up. Far be it from her to tell an angel what to do.
Cas just settled down in a chair, letting the other two settle in as well. Dean yawned and headed for the bathroom to change before he flopped over on his bed.
Runa went into the bathroom after him, changing and coming back out to settle on the second bed.
"This is nice," she sighed, mushing her face into the pillow briefly. |
Dean snorted. "Yeah, better than normal," he said, stretching out and pulling the covers up as an afterthought.
Runa just mumbled something into the pillow and snuggled under the covers as well. It didn't take her too long to fall asleep.
Dean managed to get a few hours of good sleep before the nightmares started. He twitched under the covers before he made a low sound. It didn't take him long to thrash himself awake, his breathing harsh and panicked. Cas was next to him instantly, checking him over.
Rune woke up to the thrashing.
"Dean?" she asked cautiously as she got out of bed. |
"I'm fine," Dean told both of them, sitting up and putting his head down in his hands as he tried to calm down. Cas sat next to him carefully, trying to figure out how to help.
Runa knew exactly what was going on, she knew the signs.
"What was it this time?" she asked quietly. "The rack? The pit?" |
Dean jerked at that, looking at her, his eyes wide. "What?" he demanded, sounding a little hoarse still.
"Your nightmare," Runa said. "Don't try to tell me that isn't what it was, I know better than that. So what was it?"
"The rack," Dean said after a few moments, the admission slow and painful. "After I'd gotten off." Because when he'd been on was terrible, yes, but because he was who he was, he always beat himself up more over what he'd done to the other pour souls.
Runa nodded.
"The rack was bad," she said softly. |
Dean looked at her for a few moments before he nodded slowly. It had been bad. But there was nothing he could do to change it now, and he shivered a little. Cas shifted closer to him.
Runa was quiet for a moment.
"I was there, too," she said, a bit hesitantly. "You probably don't remember." |
Dean looked at her before he shook his head slowly. No, he didn't remember that. Of course, he'd tried not to pay attention to his watchers.
Runa glanced at him, just waiting for the inevitable explosion.
"That's why I was so careful, when we first met," she said. "I wasn't sure if you remembered or not." She was quiet for a moment. "I told you there were a bunch of us, right? Azazel's spawn?" |
"Yeah, you mentioned that, said you all went Gladiator on each other," Dean said. "I kind of guessed that was in Hell." But he hadn't guessed it was at the same time he was there.
"Some of us did," Runa said, nodding. "But there were a lot of us. And, well, we were being taught. Trained. The most talented got to move on, the others were culled, one by one." She was quiet for a moment, gathering her thoughts. "Maybe you remember, there was a group. Some adults, probably two-thirds kids. Youngest was maybe ten. I remember, every day we'd be gathered up around the rack to watch. Sometimes we'd be ordered to practice." She looked down, fidgeting with her night shirt. "And it went on like that, until the day we were gathered up, and there were only a few of us left, and Azazel looked at us. I'll never forget what he said that day." She looked at Dean briefly. "He said, 'come with me. Come see. Today's the day I break a righteous man.'"
Dean closed his eyes, fighting hard against his emotions to keep control of himself. Cas settled his hand on Dean's shoulder, over his mark. Dean half-way wanted to shove them both off and go for a walk, a drive, anything to get him away from this discussion. Which was now over.
Decision made, he got up. "I'm going for a walk," he muttered, not even bothering with his shoes right then as he headed for the door. |
"There was one more thing," Runa said. "It wasn't long after that that I became an only child, because Azazel was just so furious. All of Hell was buzzing over the fact that an angel had interfered with the plan. I came topside after that, I didn't want to be the next target."
Castiel looked at her and inclined his head a bit. That had been a wise decision.
"Doesn't sound like there was much love lost between your siblings," Dean muttered. They'd gotten out around the same time. It was kind of interesting, but he wasn't touching that emotional mine field with a ten foot angel sword. "I'm going to get pie. You want pie? I want pie." He grabbed his shoes, pulling them on haphazardly. |
