Curious, Gabriel knelt down to examine the tracks as well. He blinked.
"Wow," he said. "I haven't seen anything like this for a long time." "You know what it is?" Sam asked, looking at the archangel. "I might," Gabriel said, standing up and looking around. "Like I said. Long time." |
"Stop with the cryptic stuff and tell us what you might know," Kyra said, crossing her arms over her chest.
|
"Geeze, pushy," Gabriel said. "I wasn't expecting to see tracks like these, this kind of thing should have disappeared ages ago. And I do mean ages, this is almost prehistoric."
|
"Alright. So what has the power to pull up something like this?" Kyra looked at the tracks again, frowning a bit and trying to figure out what they were.
|
"I'm not sure," Gabriel said, "considering I didn't do it and none of my older brothers are currently capable." He looked around the area. "We need to find this thing, maybe we can figure it out then."
|
"Well, lead on." Kyra motioned for him to go ahead, although she did keep a hand on her knife, just in case.
|
Gabriel nodded and took the lead, Sam right behind him. Gabriel had a very good idea of what they were looking for, now.
|
Kyra followed behind them, keeping her eyes and ears open for any evidence of the thing.
So of course it snuck up behind her. |
Gabriel heard the faint growling just before the thing attacked, and he reacted with centuries of ingrained training. In a split second, he was between Kyra and the monster, parrying the claws with his angel blade.
|
Kyra was quick to react, drawing her own blade and moving to the side to be out of the way.
"What the hell is that thing?" |
"That," Gabriel said, "is the thing we're looking for."
"But what is it?" Sam asked as he tracked the thing with his gun. "Layman's terms, it's a prehistoric sheep," Gabriel replied. |
"That does not look like a sheep." Kyra grunted when it threw itself at her, parrying and managing to shove it away, somehow. "Its teeth are not sheepish."
|
"I said the word 'prehistoric' didn't I?" Gabriel pointed out. He pulled Kyra out of the way, giving Sam a clear shot. The Hunter took it, shooting the beast in the head several times.
|
Kyra moved over after it had stopped twitching, examining it.
"Are you sure you're not behind this? 'Cause this has Trickster written all over it somehow." |
"I promise you, this wasn't me," Gabriel replied, nudging it with a foot. "I like a good joke as much as the next guy. This isn't my work."
|
Kyra looked at it again, crouching down to get a better look.
"Now the real question and potential problem is was there only one? Or is there another one somewhere?" |
"From what I remember, they're fairly solitary," Gabriel said as he glanced around. "But they eventually became modern sheep, so all sheep have an echo of these genetics. It's possible it was just bred by accident from one of the flocks nearby."
"If that's true," Sam said, "then there's no real way to keep it from happening again, is there?" "Nothing I could do, that's for sure," Gabriel said. "Dad, maybe, but not me. Not even Michael." |
"Um, I'm pretty sure genetics don't work that way without tinkering," Kyra pointed out. "Or else we'd have dire wolves and saber-toothed cats popping up all over the place." She paused. "Not that I'd be all that opposed to that, but still."
|
"Hate to break it to you, but genetics weren't supposed to be in your favor, either," Gabriel pointed out as he looked around. "I don't know who would be able to do this, aside from Dad, it's not exactly easy."
|
"Yes, I know, freak of nature," Kyra said bluntly, examining the dead creature a little more carefully. "I'm just surprised no one's been sent to clean up the mess of me yet."
|
"Compared to everything else going on, nephils are pathetically small change right now," Gabriel replied just as bluntly, putting his blade away.
Sam blinked and just watched the verbal tennis match happen. |
Kyra snorted, not at all surprised with his bluntness. But she did shift away from him a bit as she stood up straight again. She did know his history with nephilim, after all.
"Guess I should text Runa, let her know we found the thing." |
"You do that, I'll take a quick look around and make sure there are no other nasty surprises waiting," Gabriel said. He disappeared.
|
Kyra said something not very nice about him in Angelic before she pulled out her phone to text Runa.
Beast is dead, job's done. |
Runa blinked as she read the text.
That was fast. "The others found it," she added aloud to Dean and Cas. "Kyra says they killed it, whatever it was." |
