Dean moved through the house easily to the kitchen and he couldn't help but grin when he saw Jesse.
"Well, look at you," he said. "You've grown up." |
"Dean!" Jesse's tense posture immediately relaxed a bit in relief, and he grinned a bit. "You have no idea how glad I am to see you."
"I can guess. So what's up?" Dean pulled over a chair and sat across from him. "What's going on?"
"I have no idea," Jesse said. "I mean, I don't have proof of anything but... Something feels really, really wrong. Like power's been moving around all over the place lately, a shit ton of it. I've been keeping my head down, but this kind of power moving around is scary. And I've been trying to track you down for weeks, do you have any idea how stupidly hard it was to find you guys?"
"Yeah, we do that on purpose." Dean couldn't help but grin a bit. "There's been a lot of imbalance recently, but things should be calming down now." Especially after they dealt with the angel situation, but he didn't bring that up just yet.
"So you know what it was?" Jesse asked. "I mean, whatever caused this power shift is so far out of my league, I wasn't about to dig too deep about it, you know?"
Dean nodded. "There was... a shift in upper management in Hell." That was about as diplomatic as he could get about it, and really, there was no nice way to put it.
Jesse was quiet for a moment, processing that.
"Hell changed hands?" he asked. He glanced around cautiously. "Why isn't anyone freaking out? Isn't that worth freaking out about?" |
"Normally, yes," Dean said cautiously. "But we know who's in charge now." He glanced at Bobby, because he knew Bobby still wasn't comfortable with this.
"You know who's in charge," Jesse repeated. "Like, know them know them?"
"It's me, Jesse," Sam said as he finally came into the kitchen, Runa behind him. "I took over Hell." Jesse jumped a bit and turned around, and his face quickly drained of color. |
"But it's fine," Dean said firmly. "He's still Sam." He didn't move, but he did watch closely.
Jesse leaned back, looking like he was about to bolt. He was definitely not comfortable being so close to someone so powerful. His eyes flickered a bit, but didn't actually turn black.
Runa watched the kid, too. It had been a while since she'd met another cambion, and she was surprised at how young he actually was. He couldn't be more than sixteen, at the most. |
"Easy, Jesse," Dean said, moving so he was mid-way between Sam and Jesse. "You're fine. No one's going to do anything here. You remember Sam, I know, and that's Runa. She's like you."
Jesse looked between the three of them, still pale. This was way more than he'd bargained for when he went looking for the Winchesters.
"Hey, it's alright," Runa said. "You're safe here. You knew that, or you wouldn't have shown up." |
It took a few minutes, but Jesse settled down again. He was still pale and still nervous, but not as nervous as he had been.
Runa sat down at the table as she waited for him to calm down.
"My name's Runa," she said once he wasn't so close to bolting from the house. "Seems like you and I are the same." |
"Guess so." Jesse swallowed. "I've never heard of any others like me before." He eyed her, careful and curious in equal measure.
"I had a dozen brothers and sisters," Runa said carefully. "There used to be a lot of us."
Jesse blinked. "I didn't know," he muttered. "What happened to them all?" He was kind of afraid of the answer, but it was too late to take it back now.
"Our father... encouraged competition between us," Runa said carefully. "While we were training in Hell."
Jesse's expression shuttered and he nodded. He understood what that meant. "Alright. So it's just us now."
"As far as I can tell," Runa agreed, nodding. "I have no idea who your progenitor is, though. I just know that you and I are probably cousins, at best." She grinned a bit. "But hey, we must be the best, we're the ones to survive this long."
Jesse snorted. "I mostly just kept my head down," he said. "Stayed out of the way. Seemed like a good idea at the time."
"Good plan," Runa said. "I did the same thing, once I got out of Hell." She grinned. "Became a hunter, even."
Jesse snorted. "That's not keeping your head down, that's getting into trouble," he said, but he relaxed a little bit more.
