"Planning on it," Clint said, already closing his eyes. "You planning on hanging out here too?"
"I can move if you're not comfortable with me being here," Alexis said. She didn't really want to, but she would if that's what he wanted.
Clint considered it for a moment before he decided that yes, he was alright with her being there. Weird, but he wasn't going to examine it too much.
"Stay if you want," he said. "It's all good." |
"Mmkay." Alexis settled in there to get some sleep happily enough. She normally wasn't okay with sharing a bed with other people, but with Clint, oddly enough, she was fine.
Clint was already working hard on not thinking about how okay he was with Alexis sharing the bed. Because that was a slippery, slippery slope and he really didn't want to have to examine it in the middle of the night without access to Tony's alcohol stash.
Alexis was better at ignoring things like that, so she was able to get to sleep first, and slept surprisingly well. Which she would examine at a later date, to be determined never.
But she did get up and go make pancakes again for breakfast. |
Several days later, Autumn found herself out on some surveillance with Alexis. The two hadn't run missions together in a while, but they still worked together well enough that Coulson had asked them to go out and see what they could find out about the general state of affairs so far. So Autumn was kitted out with as much of a standard agent's gear as she could find and was sitting incognito at a cafe near a known HYDRA checkpoint.
Alexis was at a newspaper stand just outside, having taken over for the day for the owner. She was watching all the comings and goings with interest.
"Anything unusual so far inside?" she murmured into her comm unit. She hadn't seen much of anything that looked out of place. But then, that was HYDRA for you; blending in. |
"Not so far," Autumn replied quietly, raising her coffee cup to her lips to hide the words. "Something's not right, though, I just can't put my finger on it."
"I know. It's weird." Alexis kept her words quiet, glancing around. She didn't see anything that looked out of the ordinary, and nothing seemed to be going on, but she had an itchy feeling between her shoulderblades that wouldn't let her relax.
"I've got my eyes open," Autumn murmured. "Don't see anything yet. Don't even see anyone who might be an agent."
Alexis didn't say anything in reply, instead watching a pair cross the street and approach the café. "Two possibles entering now," she murmured.
What she didn't see were the three HYDRA agents already nearby moving and knocking her out. |
Autumn focused on the pair walking in, as well. Her attention ended up turned away from the workers in the cafe, and so she missed one slipping something into her coffee as they went by.
"Possibles are harmless," she murmured into her comm after a moment. She took a sip of her coffee as she waited for a reply. About the moment she realized that there was nobody on the other end, the drug in her coffee kicked in and she blacked out. |
Alexis woke slowly, groggy, and tried to sit up and look around, only to find that she couldn't. She'd been strapped down to a table. That, more than anything, made her wake up real quick and pay more attention. No one else was in the room, yet, but she figured that wouldn't last long.
Autumn came back to consciousness slowly, her head throbbing and her mouth dry. She tried to put her hands to her head, but she found she was strapped down tightly. A flash of panic burned through the fog in her brain as she tried to figure out what was going on and how she'd gotten there.
Alexis was right; she didn't have long to wait. Two people entered the room only five or ten minutes after she woke up, both of them dressed in doctor's gowns and gloves.
"This may hurt," one of them told her, giving her a shot. And then a second, third, fourth... Alexis noticed that the shots were smaller dosages but were going into major muscle and artery centers. That made her panic a little. |
Autumn was left alone for a while. Her thoughts grew faster and clearer as the drug finished working its way out of her, and it gave her plenty of time to work herself into a panic. By the time the doctors came in, she was struggling against her bindings. Without a word to her, they forced her to stay still and then began the injections.
Alexis wasn't sure how long passed as the injections worked, the serum spreading through her body and changing her. It felt like a long, long time, but she knew it couldn't have been more than a few hours. When the pain and the change finally stopped, she was gasping for breath, blinking rapidly and looking around. She felt different, but she wasn't sure yet how different.
Once Autumn was given the injections, she was left alone to absorb the serum. It felt like it was tearing through her, pulling her apart and remaking her as it went. When it finally eased, she went limp on the table in relief.
Alexis worked on getting herself free, trying to pull the restraints free. One of them ripped out of its holdings, and Alexis blinked. That should not have been possible, not at all. She was strong, but not that strong.
But she'd question it later if it meant she could get the hell out of there. |
Once she regained her strength a bit, Autumn started struggling against her bonds again. Instead of holding tight this time, however, a few of them started to give. Several rivets that kept the straps attached to the table popped, and the bindings loosened. That made Autumn pause for a second. Heavy-duty rivets didn't just give like that. She struggled more, though, trying to see if she could get free.
Alexis managed to get herself free quickly and opened the door, taking a look around. Plain, industrial gray walls and tile. Great. She started down the hallway, picking a direction at random and taking her time, listening hard for other people. She knew they were there, and she'd rather be armed before she had to face them.
Autumn strained at the straps holding her down. All she managed to do, however, was tip the table over. It fell with a crash, still holding her onto it. She swore loudly as she tried to wriggle out of the straps.
Alexis heard the crash and ran for the sound. It didn't take her long to locate the door, but that also meant it didn't take the others long. She punched two, ducked a bullet, and kicked the other in the sternum. When neither of them got up, she almost panicked. She should not be able to do that, this was not normal. But she tamped down on her panic for the moment, since she didn't have time to freak out right then. She'd deal with the freaking out later. She pushed the door open almost off its hinges and looked at Autumn for a moment, stunned, before she scrambled over to help.
Autumn's head snapped over when the door was torn off its hinges and she looked at Alexis for a moment, her eyes wide. She'd already worked her bonds looser, and the metal table and rivets were noticeably warped from her efforts.
