Alexis stayed there for a while, as long as Autumn wanted, before she looked at her.
"When was the last time you ate something?" |
"Don' remember," Autumn mumbled into the bedspread. "Three days?"
"Right. We need to get you something to eat, and I'll talk to Xavier. Stay here." Alexis got up and left the room, glancing around for someone to help. Because she couldn't quite do everything, especially since she wanted Autumn to eat right then.
Autumn just murmured something unintelligible into the bedspread and stayed there.
Lucky for Alexis, Logan had been hanging out in the hall, keeping an eye on things and making sure nobody bothered the girls. |
"Do you mind doing me a favor?" Alexis asked, looking at Logan and keeping her voice down in the hopes that Autumn would get to rest. "Autumn needs some food, she said she hasn't eaten in a while."
Logan considered the request for a moment, and then nodded.
"I'll take care of it," he said. |
"Thanks." Alexis shot him a quick smile and headed downstairs, concentrating for a moment.
Professor? Do you have a minute? She knew that hypothetically that worked, but there was also no Jarvis here, and that kind of threw her off. She'd gotten used to the near-godlike AI telling her where everyone was. |
Agent Sabatello? Charles was a bit surprised that she didn't just come to his office, but he took it metaphorically in stride. Yes, of course. Please, come down to my office.
Alexis headed to his office and offered him a rather sheepish smile.
"I wasn't quite sure where I'd find you, and there's no Jarvis to ask," she said, shutting the door gently behind her, still being extremely careful of everything. |
"It's quite alright," Charles replied. "I hadn't expected you to be as comfortable enough contacting me that way as you seem. Please, take a seat." He gestured to one of the chairs near the desk.
Alexis said down, though she sat near the edge of her seat. "Autumn isn't adjusting as well," she said quietly. "It sounds like she has very different side effects from me, at least in part, and I don't know how to help her." She hesitated, looking at him. "But I thought that maybe, if you didn't mind, you might be able to help?"
Charles tried to supplement Alexis's words with her thoughts, but her thoughts were so jumbled and running so quickly that he couldn't grasp any of them without getting invasive.
"Perhaps you should describe what is going on," he suggested. "I'm afraid I don't quite understand." |
"Yeah, no, of course not," Alexis said, shaking her head. "Guess I'm still adjusting too." She took a steadying breath.
"Autumn says that she can hear a lot more, and feel more. The shower was too much for her, and everything is too bright. She had all the blinds shut in her room and only a bedside lamp on." |
"I see," Charles said, thinking about that. It was worse than he'd initially thought. "What can I do to help?"
"I dunno, I was kind of hoping you could... dull the edges a bit?" Alexis shrugged helplessly.
"I... might be able to do something like that," Charles replied, already trying to figure out how such a thing might be done.
"I hope so. Just enough for her to adjust. She needs to get some rest, she looks awful." Alexis frowned a bit, clearly worried.
"I will do what I can," Charles assured her. "We will look after her. And of course, you're welcome to stay as long as you need."
"I know," Alexis said, running a hand through her hair. "I know you'll look after her. I'm just worried." She managed a smile. "Thank you. I'll stay through the day and see how she's feeling by tonight."
"You're always welcome here," Charles said soothingly. "Why don't you go into the kitchen and have some tea? I believe we just received a rather nice rose and almond tea. I will go and see what I can do for Autumn."
"Alright." Alexis got up and headed for the kitchen, but she didn't feel steady enough to make tea for herself. Instead she curled her hands into fists, trying to calm down some.
A while later, Logan came into the kitchen. He paused when he sat Alexis there.
"Kid's restin'," he said, getting himself a beer from the fridge. "Dead asleep." |
"Good." Alexis slumped a little at that. "That's good, she needs the sleep." But she still didn't quite feel stable.
"You're not lookin' so steady yourself, kid," Logan observed. "Now, I know Chuck offered you a room. Should take advantage."
"I know. I'm too wired right now." Alexis shook her head a bit. "'Sides, have to call and check in with my group."
