"I swear Tony buys it by the case," Clint said. "Or by the store, one of the two."
Alexis grinned. "Awesome. I can take a bottle or two." She relaxed a bit next to Clint.
"Just don't drag me under the bus with you," Clint said. "It was all your idea to take them." He stretched a little (especially his drawing arm) and settled onto the arm of the couch more comfortably.
"You're still fine, yeah?" Alexis looked over at him. "No unreported injuries?"
"Few bruises," Clint said. "Caught myself with my bowstring at one point, nothing I can't handle." And for once, he was telling the truth rather than just trying to get out of going to medical.
Alexis nodded and let it be for the moment, just pouring herself another drink. "I should probably get home soon before it gets late."
Clint shrugged.
"I bet Tony will let you stay over," he said. "Not like he doesn't have enough space." |
"I think Coulson might object." But Alexis didn't get up. Not just yet.
"What, objecting to letting an agent stay the night after a few drinks instead of driving home?" Clint pointed out. "Phil's practical enough he'll let it slide."
Alexis shrugged but didn't say anything else for a few minutes. "Well we'll see if Tony is even amenable."
"You'd be surprised," Clint said, pouring himself a bit more to drink. "As long as you don't mess with his tech, he'll give you just about anything."
"I don't think I know him well enough, I haven't been here long enough," Alexis said, shaking her head a bit. "Besides, you're describing how he acts around the team. I'm not part of the team, I'm different."
"He barely knew Phil," Clint pointed out. He leaned back a bit. "If you're going to insist on going home, at least ask to use Tony's driver."
"We'll see how smashed I feel like getting first," Alexis muttered, reaching for the bottle again. "And just in case, we're going to say I'm officially off the clock, because Coulson will have my ass if I'm getting drunk on the clock."
Clint snorted.
"Phil's never off the clock," he said. He grinned. "But as far as I'm concerned, the clock stopped as soon as the mission was over. So go ahead." |
"Good to know you're on my side." Alexis tipped her glass to him in a salute, draining it in one go.
Clint grinned and saluted back with his glass, and then finished his own drink.
"Stark always has really good booze," he said. |
"No wonder you occasionally show up with a hangover," Alexis said appreciatively. "I totally understand now. But I still have to disapprove."
"I don't usually show up with a hangover," Clint said. "Only occasionally. And usually only after really rough ops or really fucking strange ops."
"Oh trust me, I get it," Alexis said feelingly. "You're not the only one that gets strange ops. I used to be an active field agent before I got assigned here."
"Unless you dealt with something weirder than a complete alien invasion, I still win," Clint said. He looked at her. "How's an active field agent turn into a paper-pusher?"
"I'm not just a paper-pusher, this still counts as active," Alexis said a bit defensively. "I had down time from active missions, started helping out with paperwork to keep myself sane, next thing I know Coulson's swooping down on me asking if I think I can work with the Avengers because he really needed to find someone before the current handler quit."
"But you're not field-active like assets are, anymore," Clint reasoned. "Not flinging yourself over the metaphorical cliff anymore."
"Not for a while," Alexis replied carefully. "I'm still on the active duty back-up roster. So are you, actually. You're an Avenger, but you're still an agent. You'll be pleased to know we had to make all the paperwork in case you or Natasha has to go on a SHIELD-related run rather than an Avengers one."
Clint grinned at that.
"Awesome," he said. "I'm still causing new paperwork creation. HR thought Phil had finally covered all possible situations involving me." |
