"I'm sure you'll get everything to work," Paige said.
"Of course I will, it's just a matter of how long this'll take," Tony said. Not that he cared if it took a long time. "Should be done before tomorrow."
Paige hesitated a bit.
"Mind if I watch?" she asked after a moment. |
"Sure," Tony said. "Just roll on over." He motioned vaguely to his side where she wouldn't be in the way but could still watch.
Paige nodded and made her way over, settling where she could see what he was doing. It was kind of fascinating, really.
Tony stayed focused on his work, occasionally muttering to himself as he worked.
Paige just watched everything come together, occasionally reaching out to touch stray bits and pieces that ended up on the table near her.
It took Tony a while, but he did get everything fixed and working better than before. Grinning, he set it aside.
"There, that's one project done." |
"That was really kind of interesting," Paige said, her fingers on three different scraps of metal. Each finger was a different color, each having tasted something different.
Tony grinned. "You should see when I'm testing new arrows for Clint," he said, leaning back in his seat and looking over at her. He did note that she had three different fingers.
"If there's not at least three explosions, I would be very disappointed," Paige said. "I've heard a lot about Clint's arrows." She blinked when she realized he was looking at her hands. "Sorry." She pulled her fingers back, letting go of the metal.
"Sometimes there aren't explosions, more like gas or nets or things," Tony said. "But most of them explode somehow anyway." He grinned. "I hadn't realized you could hold three at once. How many can you do?" He picked up another different metal bit and pushed it over to her.
"Little pieces like this, it's not a matter of pulling a lot of metal," Paige said. "There's not a lot to pull, and pieces this small can't be used to cover all of me. It's kind of like... Like feeling three different textures at once. You know you're feeling all three of them, and you can focus on one at a time, but you can also focus on all three as well. It's just harder, the more area I'm trying to cover, because I have to focus on all of it at once."
Reaching over, she touched the new metal bit and the metal bled up her whole finger. Then she touched a couple of others, until all five of her fingers were covered. None of the metals touched, however, and she was really concentrating to hold on to all five at once. |
Tony nodded. "Like juggling multiple projects, I suppose. Or back in the beginning learning to juggle things." Though he had quickly progressed well beyond that. He was, after all, a genius. "Of those, which is the hardest to hold? Or are they similarly difficult?"
"The vibranuim is distracting," Paige muttered. "Very distracting. The gold-whatever alloy isn't bad, the steel is fine... What is this, copper? Tastes like copper, same taste as a new penny. The iron is easy."
"So my alloy and the vibranium," Tony said, pleased. "The unusual ones." He was quiet for a moment. "You said the vibranium is distracting."
"You have no idea how distracting it is," Paige said, letting go of the metals. "It's like having an active cell phone next to a couple of iPods and a Gameboy."
Tony snorted. "Buzzing and chirping and demanding your attention?" he guessed, getting up to go put away the bracelet and get something else to work on.
"Pretty much, yeah," Paige said. "More buzzing than anything. It tickles."
Tony snorted. "So it doesn't lend itself well to replication," he said, poking the little bit of vibranium with a random bolt.
"Not at all," Paige said. "A little bit like that wouldn't even give me enough to cover my whole hand. I'd need a lot for a full-body cover.
"Like a whole shield, which would kind of defeat the purpose," Tony said. "Alright. What about the gold alloy? How much coverage will that get you?"
"Given the whole gauntlet to use?" Paige asked. She considered it for a moment. "Enough, if I needed it. Not full coverage, but enough for a quick block."
Tony nodded. "Alright. Try with the gauntlet, just give me an idea." He leaned back on his stool to watch.
Paige blinked.
"Well, you won't be able to see most of it," she pointed out. "I'm dressed." |
