Crystal nodded and grabbed her own bag, following him easily. She didn't mind letting him lead, especially since he knew what he was doing.
Remy walked with her for a while, until they came upon an old, well-kept bar.
"In here, chere," he said, heading for the door. "If Gambit's right, this place is friendly enough for our kind of folk." |
Crystal raised her eyebrows but followed him inside, looking around. It looked like a normal bar on the surface, at least.
"Well, now, lookee here," the bartender called when they walked in. "Ain't seen your face in ages, LeBeau! Finally come back around to our parts?"
"Just passin' through, Frank," Remy called back, grinning. "On the way back to New Orleans." |
Crystal blinked at the bartender.
"With a friend," Frank said, looking at her. "That's somethin' new." He grinned, but it was just friendly. |
"Frank, cette charmante dame est Crystal," Remy said, slipping into a bit more French than usual. He knew Frank from way back, when the man was still living in French Canada. "Met her while visitin' Charles."
Frank grinned. "Finally making friends, huh?" he teased. He knew Remy didn't mind. "Well, Crystal, it's nice to meet you. First lady he's ever brought around." He grinned at Remy.
Remy rolled his eyes.
"Is there a spare room, Frankie?" he asked. "Be nice to have an actual place to crash for the night." |
"Sure," Frank agreed. "I got one room open in the back if you two're willing to share."
Remy looked at Crystal, raising an eyebrow. If it was alright with her, he didn't mind either.
Crystal nodded. That was fine with her, she didn't much care about sharing.
Remy nodded to Frank.
"That's fine, mon ami," he said. "Very kind of you to let us stay, thanks." |
"As always, my pleasure." Frank gestured for them to come back behind the bar, leading them down a short hallway to a set of stairs. He owned the building and had two bedrooms upstairs furnished, and he led them to one.
Going into the room, Remy put his bag down.
"Good enough for tonight, chere?" he asked when Crystal walked in. |
Crystal nodded. "This is fine. Not the worst place I've slept, not by far." She put her things down and turned a quick smile on Frank.
"I'll let you two settle in." Frank grinned and retreated, shutting the door gently. |
Remy rolled his eyes, but sat down on the bed. It was a full-size bed, so it was just big enough for them both if they decided to share. Otherwise, Remy had no problem sleeping in the chair or on the floor.
"Frank is a good man," he commented as he took off his coat. "I always make it a point t' stop here if I'm passin' through." |
"He seems quite friendly," Crystal agreed. "He one of us?" She didn't have a problem sitting next to him and pulling her shoes off.
"Nah, Frank's a normal guy," Remy replied. "His little sister, though, she is. So Frank's gotta bit of a soft spot for us freaks."
Crystal snorted at his wording but just got comfortable. "Well, I'm good for the night," she said.
"Good to hear," Remy said. "You want the bed, chere? Gambit's fine with the floor for one night."
"There's enough room for both of us, long as you're not a clinger," Crystal said. "If you cling we have problems, otherwise we're fine."
"Gambit's no clinger," Remy said, grinning a bit. "Some cuddles, maybe, but no clingin'."
Crystal laughed quietly at that. "Then we're good," she said again, grabbing her sleep clothes so she could get ready for bed.
Remy grinned and politely turned so she could change.
"If we're lucky, we'll be able t' catch a train tomorrow," he said. "Plenty of freight trains through these parts, there's bound t' be one heading south we can hop on." |
"Freight train?" Crystal asked as she changed. "They don't usually encourage passengers."
