"That is true," Doreen said. "But they're not telling us anything, which says that they think we'll be interested if we knew." She was quiet for a moment as a light bulb went off. "Is it an 'it' or a person?"
"I'm afraid I cannot give you any more information," Jarvis replied.
"Alright. Thanks, Jarvis." Doreen backed off for the moment, meandering back to their main room. "So, I think we know who's in that room." She kept her voice down and shut the door so they were kind of on their own.
"I think you're right," Laurel replied, nodding. "So how are we going to get in?"
"I have lock picks," Doreen said with a wicked grin. "Clint's been teaching me how to use them." She was quiet for a moment. "Do we want to, though? I mean, we know there's a reason we're not allowed in."
"If they really wanted us out, someone would have been standing guard," Laurel reasoned. "They wouldn't have left the job to the incorporeal entity."
"True, although maybe they just don't think we can get past Jarvis," Doreen said with a grin. "Anyway, we should probably make sure they're not about to go check on the person at least."
"Right," Laurel said. She grinned. "I'll go take a look around, you be ready to crack the lock, alright?"
"Got it." Doreen grinned and took her lock picking kit, heading with her over to the door but not touching it. Yet.
Laurel quickly went to look around, making sure nobody was coming.
"Go for it," she said when she didn't see anyone. |
Doreen nodded and got the door unlocked fairly quickly, letting the two of them into a fairly large room. She shut the door quietly after Laurel was in too and then glanced around.
Laurel followed Doreen quickly, letting the door close behind her.
The Winter Soldier was sitting against the wall in the corner behind the door, watching them. They appeared to be a simple pair of unarmed girls, but he knew very well that looks could be deceiving. But still, the girls didn't move like trained professionals, so he would continue to watch them. |
Doreen spotted him and blinked at him. He didn't look like a bad person but that didn't necessarily mean anything. He had put himself a corner, a strategic spot, and one where he wouldn't be spotted immediately.
"Hi there," she greeted, still watching him. |
Winter Soldier didn't immediately reply, just watching the two. He hated how unbalanced her felt without his arm, and he knew it would affect how quickly he would be able to get to his feet, if he needed to.
Doreen noticed the spot where his arm should be but managed not to comment. Only just but she managed not to.
"There are chairs, you know. They tend to be more comfortable than the floor. Although, you know, in this place the floor is pretty comfy." |
Winter Soldier continued to just watch, although his expression lightened a bit from 'subtly hostile' to just 'suspicious'.
Laurel was already making mental notes. Missing arm (not sure what or if something was supposed to replace it), tactical gear (assassin?), and an oddly familiar face. She couldn't quite pinpoint where she'd seen his face before, but she was sure she had. |
Doreen had reached the same conclusions, and she kept studying Winter Soldier.
"Not much of a chair person, then, I guess. That's okay." She was quiet for a moment before she plopped down on the floor so they were at the same level and grinned. |
Laurel sat down, as well, making some notes on her phone.
That made the Winter Soldier blink. He wasn't used to that kind of behavior from people. But he still wasn't certain enough of their threat level to speak. |
Doreen shot him her best disarming grin. "A bit shy? That's okay, I've been told I talk enough for three people. I'm Doreen, and this is Laurel."
"Barnes." The word came out of his mouth before he realized that he'd even considered speaking, and it made him pause. That certainly hadn't happened before.
Doreen smiled. "Barnes. Okay." Some little bell started going off in the back of her mind, but she ignored it for now. "Well, how are you doing? Are you hungry at all? Thirsty? I can go grab stuff for you."
Barnes kept his mouth shut this time. He'd already given more information than he'd intended, and he wasn't about to do it again.
Laurel was busy wracking her brain, trying to figure out why the face and name seemed to fit together so well. It seemed just out of reach, and she really wanted to know. |
"I'll make sure you get something at dinner time. Someday I'd like to know if you have something you prefer to eat. You don't have to tell me today, you can think on it and let me know in a couple of days. I usually end up cooking stuff every few days, if not daily." Doreen shrugged. "I bake, too, I'll bring you some cookies or something tomorrow."
Barnes blinked. It was a lot of useless information, but he made note of it all anyways. Maybe it would become useful later. He didn't respond, however.
Doreen glanced at Laurel and shrugged.
"Well, speaking of dinner, I should probably get started on that. We'll be back to see you again soon though." |
