Steve blinked, startled, but got up slowly and made his way over to the room. He hesitated for a moment before he let himself in, glancing around.
Barnes looked over when the door opened. He didn't immediately say anything when Rodgers came into the room.
"Why 'Bucky'?" he asked finally. |
Steve couldn't help a little smile at that as he shrugged.
"When you were a kid, you decided 'James' was too formal, and you hated 'Jim'. Your dad had already shortened 'Buchanan' into 'Buck', when he was around, so you took that." He shrugged. |
Barnes nodded a bit in acceptance. That explanation felt right.
"I don't remember anything before the ravine," he said after another long moment of silence. |
Steve closed his eyes for a moment before he sighed and sank down to sit near Barnes.
"That's okay," he said. "It'll come back to you. Just give it time." |
Barnes just nodded a bit and lapsed into silence. At least nobody was trying to kill him anymore. And if he was honest, he liked Rodgers being there.
Steve stayed sitting there for a while, trying not to watch Bucky. Because he knew it wasn't Bucky quite, not quite yet. But he couldn't not think of this man as Bucky.
"What happened on Coney Island?" Barnes asked quietly after a while. "The time with the roller coaster."
Steve snorted. "You dragged a coupla dames with us," he said, leaning back against the wall. "You were always popular with dames. They liked you, but I didn't make quite the same impression. There was one roller coaster we all went on, you were the only one that didn't get sick."
Barnes couldn't help a smirk and a soft snort at that.
"I bet," he murmured. He could almost picture it: the girls looking a bit green, and skinny little Steve bent over a trash can. He could almost hear himself, too... "Shouldn't have had that chili dog." He paused when he realized he'd said it aloud. |
Steve laughed quietly. "Jerk, you were the one that wanted 'em in the first place."
Barnes couldn't help but snicker a bit. Somehow, the banter seemed normal, familiar.
"Rained that night, didn't it? Chased us back home." |
"It beat us back home. We were both soaked by the time we got back." Steve grinned. "The ladies you brought were rather upset at being rained out."
Barnes snorted slightly. That sounded about right. Somehow, things came back a little easier with Rodgers there.
Steve grinned. "And there was the time that kid stuck gum in your hair," he said, grinning broadly.
Barnes blinked, trying to think back.
"...had to buzz it down," he finally said. "Looked horrible." |
"It did, until it grew out some." Steve shook his head. "You complained your hair was too short for weeks."
Barnes gave a soft snort and raised his hand to run it through his hair.
"It's a bit longer than I remember you ever keeping it," Steve said when he noticed the motion.
Barnes shrugged a bit.
"No reason to cut it," he said. "A tool has no need of vanity." |
Steve's expression froze at that before he made himself nod and look away. He was so mad he wanted to destroy the people who had done this to him.
Barnes noticed the sudden tension and lowered his hand again. He must have said something that Rodgers didn't like-- Oh. Right. The bit about being a tool. He didn't apologize for it, though.
Steve didn't leave immediately, but he wasn't as relaxed as before, either.
Barnes watched him. He'd been expecting more questions, rather than just some amusing reminiscence. As good as it was to get even a few memories back, he thought Rodgers would try to interrogate him, at least a little.
Steve wasn't interested in interrogating him, but he was interested to see what else Bucky remembered.
"So, have you remembered anything else? About... before?" |
